Moraga Rotarians ZOOMing

Co-Presidents Michon Debbie Koo rang

a gong and Evie Michon welcomed all
to Moraga Rotary where we have been
meeting for over 52 years in person and
electronically. The meeting was on the
Zoom software, with about 16 on-line
including ADG Joy Alaidarous. Evie
held an American Flag on a toothpick up
to her screen and we all saluted the flag
in unison.

Speaker is John Donnelly, retired Army
Brigadier General after 30 years as a
Medical Service Corps officer. His
service included deployments to
Operation Desert Shield, Operation
Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi
Freedom.

He has run hospitals under extremely
hazardous conditions and is very up to
date about the current virus.
His book Center of Mercy is about
caring for the wounded in Operation
Iraqi Freedom 2. He is past president of
Orinda Rotary.

Before the meeting, it was decided that
since the Field Day medals, etc., are not
dated, Tony should order the supplies
even though the event may be cancelled
anyway. Both Field Day May 6 and e-
Waste May 30 are possibly to be
cancelled.

Previous birthdays included Honorary
Rotarian Clyde Wilson, Joyce
Ellenberg, and Suzanne Costanza. It
was actually Hubert Ma’s birthday, but
he was not in attendance. For obvious
reasons there were no trips taken and
therefore no fines for that.

Happy Bucks included Debbie
Roessler’s report that the White
Elephant Sale was the most successful
ever, over $2.4 million
Frank May offered a High $5 for his
niece’s wedding in Tucson, AZ that he
and Linda watched on Facebook.
Rich Render reported 20 donations so
far for the Al Simonsen memorial
scholarship. Brian South gave an
update on governments’ actions to fight
the coronavirus. There have been 71
cases countywide. A special Town
Council meeting approved a Moraga
State of Emergency which then qualifies
the Town for funding. Brian ordered
and received emergency service
supplies of masks, gowns, sanitizers,
etc for Moraga. It is still important for all
to obey shelter in place till told not to. If
members know of community residents
who need help, his office can assist. All
police personnel working their 12 hour
shifts.
Joy Alaidarous offered her help and
her Rossmoor Club’s help on a grant
proposal for additional school safety
money.

Alka Mulakaluri told of teaching zoom
classes of 2,000 people at a time.
Citizens have been putting other
donations in Little Free Libraries. If
putting in a book, please wrap it in
paper.
Gary Irwin reported his early morning
trip to Moraga Safeway during special
hours for seniors: Tuesday and
Thursday 6-9 am. The line forms well
before 6, but once inside, everyone gets
around pretty well, mostly observing the
6’ spacing. Most paper goods and
cleaning and disinfecting supplies are
sold out quickly. Debbie Roessler
mentioned Sun Valley and Alamo
Safeway being well stocked.

Angelo Costanza reported that Camp
Royal has been cancelled this year, and
our campers were very sad to hear the
bad news.
Debbie Koo reported Camp Venture
has been cancelled. Camp Venture
Chair, Beri Kasper, has been advised to
roll our fees to next year.
Frank May reported that he is working
with Campo guidance counselor Joan
Batcheller on scholarship applications,
and that we should be able to select
suitable recipients again this year.
Dianne and Clyde Wilson have
returned from celebrating a special
occasion in Tahiti, after some interesting
adventures in current air travel. Sounds
like a good story for next week, right?
