Part 1
INTRODUCTION
The United Arab Emirates is a country in Western Asia at the northeast end of the
Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman to the east and Saudi
Arabia to the south and west, as well as sharing maritime borders with Qatar to
the west and Iran to the north. UAE has seven cities Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman,
Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al Quwain. It has a population of
9.89 million residents and expatriates as of 2020 The official religion among the
United Arab Emirates is Muslim, coming in at 76% of the population, a 9%
Christian following, approximately 10% Hindu or Buddhist faiths, and less than 5%
are other religion (www.worldpopulationreview.com). There are 3.23 million
residents and expatriates living in Abu Dhabi, the city capital of the United Arab
Emirates (https://www.globalmediainsight.com/blog/uae-population-statistics/
13% of the total population of the United Arab Emirates are Christians. Non-
Muslims in the said country are free to worship and wear their religious clothing
as long as it’s applicable. In terms of marriage, Christian women can marry
Muslim men but, Muslim women are forbidden to be wed with Christian men. The
conversion from Islam is acceptable as long as the converted person does not call
for another religion, insult the Islam, or cause other people to follow that religion
in any way. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_in_the_United_Arab_Emirates
Hamdan Street is one of the oldest places in Abu Dhabi, known for its retail hubs.
There are numerous mosques in the street, including the Ali Bin Murshid Mosque,
Darwish Mosque, Omeir Bin Yousuf Mosque, and Qasr al-Hosn Mosque, all of
which are less than 10 minutes away from the street. For Christians living here,
the Church of Great Saint Anthony, St Joseph’s Church, and St Andrew’s Church
are all a short drive away. https://property-geeks.com/communities/hamdan-street/
People from all over the world see that there are so many opportunities in this
rich country particularly in Hamdam Street where businesses and establishments
are booming. A lot of people especially Filipinos (non-muslim) fear that there is no
freedom to worship because there are Muslim laws (sharia law) in place. We often
hear stories of misfortunes and human rights abuses in the Middle East (citation
needed).
2019 marked the country’s theme as the Year of Tolerance, a homage to the late
Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s legacy to inspire and promote religious,
racial, communal, cultural, sectarian and political tolerance within the country.
The UAE plans to achieve this through comprehensive laws, policies and practices
directed towards creating an all-encompassing tolerant culture

tolerance.aspx).
The end goal of the country is to embrace a multi-cultural expatriates who will
respect and freely practice their religion without any religious persecution and
see how the small majority of its population, specifically, the Filipinos in Abu
Dhabi are able to navigate and exercise these rights.

People from all over the world see that there are so many opportunities in this rich country particularly in Hamdam street
where businesses and establishments are booming. A lot of people especially filipinos (non-muslim) are hesitant to go fearing
that there is no freedom to worship and especially that strict muslim laws (sharia law) are in place. Filipinos always hear
stories of misfortunes and human rights abuses in the middle east. This creates fear and prejudice and put United Arab
Emirates into a bad light.
To get broader picture ofthe lives and the current situation of Christian people living in UAE particularly in Hamdam street
where the research is being conducted.
To know if freedom of worship has been exercised freely by Christian people in this country.
To find out if Christian people feel safe and secure while living in this country.
The scope area of the study is the residential area of Hamdan Street, Abu Dhabi. The study involved 40 randomly-chosen
residents of the street, without a limitation to its race and religion. We will also sample 35 existing Christians within the area.
However, the focus of the survey will revolve around identifying the respondent’s background to understand their current
religion, their general feel of the Christian religion and their personal perspective of the Filipino-Christians in the area.
Hypotheses
There is freedom to practice any religion in the United Arab Emirates, not just Christianity.
