For more than two millennia wind-powered machines have been used; farmers
once used windmills to grind their grains and pump water. And from that moment on
wind power was highly considered as an alternative energy supply. Firstly, most wind
energy comes from turbines that can be as tall as 20 buildings. The wind spins the blades,
which are connected to a generator that produces electricity. Today, more and more
wind turbines are used. And over the past years, the wind turbines use has increased
more than 25 percent per year. Unfortunately, it only provides a small fraction of the
world’s energy. Secondly, wind power is an alternative to burning fossil fuels. It produces
no greenhouse gas emissions during operation; also, it consumes no water and uses little
land. Wind is a clean source of renewable energy that does not produce air or water
pollution. And as the wind is free, anyone can use it. Thirdly, mass production and
technology advances are making turbines cheaper. The biggest turbines generate enough
electricity in a year to supply about 600 homes; and smaller turbines can produce enough
electricity for a single home or small business. Wind farms sometimes, have hundred of
these turbines in particularly windy spots. But, if the wind is not blowing, there is no
electricity generated. There also exist wind farms in large bodies of water to generate
electric power. These installations can utilize powerful winds that are only available in
these locations. However, the construction and the maintenance costs are considerably
higher so it is the less frequent. Nevertheless, the wind industry is on a high position.
