AN ALFA LOVE AFFAIR

It started in 1911 ... when Alfa Romeo made its first racing appearance .. .
and a World wide love affair began.

We started in 1959... when our racing Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider made its
first appearance in Midland, Texas...and our love affair began.

Since then, Alfa Romeo has gone on to win two World Championships and
twenty-eight Grand Prix victories. We have gone on to win many amateur
championships and numerous professional races. More importantly, our
customers have won even more.

Just as Alfa Romeo's successful racing experience has contributed to the

design and configuration of their production cars, our own successful racing
experience has contributed to our knowledge and understanding of the needs
of the Alfa Romeo owner.

Our purpose since 1967 has been to provide the Alfa Romeo owner with the
best parts and accessories available. We will continue to advance the state-of-
the-art through continual testing, development and research, and make avail-
able the maximum in performance and reliability for all your driving needs .. .
street performance, hillclimb, slalom, rallye or racing.

We wish you success and enjoyment with your Alfa Romeo.

DUAL CARB CONVERSION

The best of two worlds is available exclusively from Shankle Engineering when trouble-
free, power producing European style carburetors are combined with USA manifolds,
linkage, and air cleaners to provide abolt-on owner-installed alternative to Spica tuel
injection on all 1750 and 2000 Alfa engines through 1981.

Regardless of weather(hot, cold, wet,or dry) you will enjoy easy start-up every time with
continuous smooth running throughout the entire rev range. From idle to redline you will
experience a dramatic improvement in quick reving and passing acceleration. With a
increase of 10 HP over Spica fuel injection, the carburetor conversion is particularly
strong in the mid and higher RPM ranges. Reasonably priced, at-home installation, sure
starting, smooth running, and increased acceleration all coupled with trouble-free
operation ... thaYs the Shankle engineered dual carb conversion.

SPRINT RAM TUBES

Increase low and mid-range performance with these 4~/z"long curved air horns. Suitable
for use on both the Weber DCOE and Dell'orto 40 or 45 carburetor, this kit will fit in the
GTV, Berlina, Spider, and Alfetta without alteration. The polished aluminum air horns
with metal screen are directionally adjustable, and are mounted on an aluminum plate to
stabilize the carburetors.

HIGH PERFORMANCE INDUCTION
FOR SPICA FUEL INJECTED ENGINES
"QUADRAFLOW"
The exclusive Shankle designed air induction system for 4 cylinder Spica fuel injected
engines through 1979 provides a 7 horsepower increase over the stock Alfa unit. The
system utilizes 4~/z" long custom curved and bell mouthed air horns. This optimum
length was determined by dynamometer testing for increased performance throughout
the street RPM range. The air filtration system does not interfere with dynamic benefits
of the air horns as does the "sock" type filters. The accordian style high pertormance
washable/re-usable filter is encased in polished chrome steel plates, and provides
superior filtration to "sock" type filters whose limited surface area loses effectiveness
rapidly as the filter gets dirty. A simple bolt-on installation, the kit is complete with filter
oil, all necessary hardware, and instructions.

WEBER CARB FOR SOLEX CARBURETED CARS

Parts for the Solex carburetors are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain in some
cases and just not available in the remaining cases. To solve this problem we have
made a Weber 32136 carburetor available that bolts on to replace the Solex. Weber
parts are more readily available and Weber Garbs are famous for their flexibility of
application. We supply the Garb properly jetted and with all the linkage required to just
bolt it onto your existing manifold. They do require the use of an air cleaner other than
the stock system.

"SURE-START" MECHANICAL ACTUATOR

Now you can eliminate hard starting ...low gas mileage ... poor pertormance ...and
black smoke from the exhaust pipe due to a failure of the original thermostatic actuator
in Spica fuel-injected Alfa Romeos.
The original thermostatic actuator may fail totally or partially. With total failure, the unit
remains in the cold-run position. With partial failure, the unit does not extend to the full
hot-run position. Both failures result in an over-rich fuel mixture.
The SHAIVKLE SURE-START mechanical actuator lets you control this function manu-
ally. The unit replaces the original thermostatic actuator, and uses the existing throttle
control lever for adjustment. For starting, the lever is pulled out. When the engine is
running, the lever is pushed in. IYs that simple ...and it works.
• Designed and engineered by Shankle Automotive Engineering, Inc.
• Proven in day to day use
• Manufactured to highest standards in plated steel. Permanently lubricated.
• Easy installation. No special fabrication necessary.
•See Technical Specifications section for instructions for testing original thermostatic
actuator.

HEEL &TOE KIT

This kit allows the owner to lower the throttle pedal to the same plane as the brake pedal.
This makes for a more comfortable driving position, and also enables the driver to more
easily perform the traditional "heel &toe" maneuver. The kit installs easily and is
adjustable to suit the owner's taste. The pedal is lowered as much as one third of its
original travel distance.

LONG LIFE VALVE GUIDES

Most of Alfa's high oil consumption is due to worn valve guides and piston oil control
rings. A good portion of the perennial problem can be solved by installing our special
silicone aluminum bronze valve guides with teflon intake seals. The increased wear
resistance of this material coupled with the superior seals. will increase guide life and
reduce oil usage.

manufactured chromed tubular steel headers while still retaining the original Alfa smog equip-
ment. You can enjoy the double benefits of increased horsepower along with the durability of steel.
Made of continuous bend steel tubing that allows a smooth and uninterrupted exhaust gas flow.
the length of the primaries and secondaries. and the shape of collectors have been determined by
more than 15 years of exhaust system design based on hundreds of engine dynamometer tests.
Shankle Headers provide significant horsepower increases over stock Alfa systems. Alfetta plus
11 hp, Spider plus 10 hp, GT-V6 plus 15 hp (see Horsepower Test Results).
The original Alfa cast iron exhaust manifolds inhibit available horsepower due mostly to the
shortness of their primaries. In addition, the cast iron material is rather fragile and quite prone to
cracking even though it is very thick and heavy.
Customized for the year and model of your Alfa, each set of Shankle Headers is equipped with the
necessary fittings to accept the appropriate catalytic converter. air pump. and lambda sensor(see
Emission Test Results).
Jig welded for a precise fit. the chromed tubular headers fit all air conditioned cars. and come
complete with all gaskets,. mounting hardware. and instructions for owner installation.

EMISSION TEST RESULTS

A 1979 Alfa Romeo 2000 Sports Sedan with Spica Fuel Injection tuned to normal factory
specifications. and with 55.000 miles on the odometer. was tested to measure the tail pipe
emissions of Shankle Headers and Custom Catalytic Converter. Tests were performed using
California State Certified test equipment and followed California mandated test procedure. With
the air pump and either the Alfa or our Custom Catalytic Converter installed along with Shankle
Headers. the car easily met the California standard for HC and CO emissions.

We have developed a Smog Equip Kit for those Alfa owners who want to use the original
Alfa Romeo emission control equipment with a previously installed early-style Shankle
tubular Header. Custom designed for each year and model, the kit contains all of the
components that are necessary to add to your Headers in order to install a catalytic
converter, lambda sensor. or air pump. It will be necessary to weld some of the kits fittings
and flanges to your headers and converter aspart ofthe retro-fit installation. However, it is
a simple and straightforward job for an experienced welder. The Smog Equip Kit is

CUSTOM CATALYTIC CONVERTER

If your original Alfa catalytic converter needs replacing, then you can save by installing a
Custom converter. Compare our price against the cost of an original Alta converter and
you will agree that we have achieved a real price breakthrough for 1975 through 1981
Alfetta and Spider models. Tests conducted on California State Certified Test equip-
ment and following mandated test procedures showed that the Custom catalytic con-
verter easily met California Emission Standards for HC and CO (see Emission Test
Results). These are new converters with a honeycomb block coated with a plantinum
and palladium catalyst, wrapped with a high heat resistant material to greatly reduce
outside temperatures, and protected by a rugged stainless steel case. Complete with
gaskets, it is an easy bolt-on installation for the Alfa owner.

MARELLI ELECTRONIC IGNITION
Utilizing an electromagnetic trigger device, this Marelli Electronic Ignition is a breaker-
less high voltage system. Coordinated by Marelli especially for Alfa Romeo, the kit
includes a pointless magnetic pick-up distributor, high output coil, and finned electronic
module. As these units come from Marelli, the advance curve is slower than a stock Alfa
distributor. We disassemble, custom modify, and bench test each distributor to produce
a faster advance curve that will increase both low and mid range engine response. Easy
owner installation on 4-cylinder models.

ORDER NUMBER 5730

HIGH PERFORMANCE BOSCH DISTRIBUTOR

With mechanical advance and a single set of points, this Bosch distributor provides a
simple and straightforward ignition system for 4-cylinder cars originally equipped with
either Marelli, Lucas, or Bosch. Because the standard advance curve of this model
Bosch is slower than that of a stock Alfa distributor, we disassemble, custom modify,
and bench test each distributor to produce a faster advance curve that will increase both
low and mid range response. The off-the-line performance and a quicker reving engine
will be quite noticeable.

outer jacket. The high performance street set has the feature of being radio static
suppressive, by using a carbon filament core. The cable on both sets is immune to
ozone, corona, and moisture. It is also impervious to fuel and oil spills. The silicone boot
is moulded at a 45° angle for easy installation and removal, while providing an air-tight
seal around the plugs, and will not harden or crack.

"OPTO-ELECTRIC" IGNITION SYSTEM

FOR BOTH MARELLI & BOSCH DISTRIBUTORS

The Allison Capacitive Discharge, Breakerless system completely eliminates the

breaker points and condenser ...replacing them with an "Opto-Electronic Trigger,"
using alight-emitting diode and a phototransistor.
By installing a breakerless system, you eliminate the need for future ignition tune-ups.
Wear and deterioration of points is responsible for changes and variations in dwell and
timing. The Allison system replaces the points with the optical "solid state" trigger which is
used to pulse a power module. Since there is no mechanical contact, there is nothing to
wear out or fall out of adjustment. And by eliminating the breaker points, the major causes
of tune-ups(worn wiper arm or rubbing block and eroded contacts) are also eliminated.

ELECTRIC FAN KIT

Our engine dyno testing has shown that the standard Alfa Romeo belt-driven 6 bladed
fan consumes 7 hp @ 6000 RPM. During acceleration and at high speeds the fan is not
necessary, yet, when stopped in traffic on a hot day and cooling is needed the most, the
mechanical fan is not as effective as it should be. The installation of this thermostatically
controlled electric fan in your Spider-GTV-Berlina will increase your cooling capability
and save horsepower at the same time. Will not fit Spider with air conditioning.

WATER INJECTION KIT

Essentially, the benefits of water injection are to increase fuel economy and engine
performance by allowing the use of optimum spark advance and lower octane gasoline.
The heart of this unit is a miniature electronic computer that measures engine RPM and
load, and instantly meters the amount of water to be injected. With water injection we have
been able to run the cheapest regular gas with a full 38° maximum advance. Our tests
allowed us to run between 6° and 9° more advance than we could without water injection.
Results will probably vary somewhat depending on ambient air temperature, humidity, fuel
quality, etc., but the water injection system definitely reduces pinging, knocking, and
detonation while it improves performance in all models, four cylinder and V-6.

203 HORSEPOWER TURBO
Now you can transform your Alfa 2000 into one of the truly spectacular pertormance
cars on the road today. With 203 horsepower at 6300 RPM, the driveability of your
Turbo Alfa will be vastly improved throughout the entire range. You will have power-on-
command to increase hill climbing ability, passing power on highways, and generally
enjoy smooth, quiet, and effortless high pertormance cruising.
When you want or need the acceleration, the boost is there, and iYs there in a big way.
When you want or need to drive more sedately, the turbo system is completely under
control, providing easy garage-to-supermarket stop-and-go driving. Your Shankle Turbo
equipped Alfa 2000 will be easy to start, easy to drive, and easy to reach 130 mph.

TROUBLE-FREE OPERATION
Although the Shankle Turbo produces an 84%increase in power, mechanically it is a
very simple device. The boost effect is typically very smooth with no sudden or jarring
variations in power. Low compression 7.8 to 1 forged pistons, an oil cooler, stock
camshafts, and the keeping of RPM within normal limits ensures that there will be no
adverse effect on engine wear. Detonation is prevented and run-away boost is con-
trolled by means of a waste gate, a dual point pressure retard distributor, and a water
injection system. These safeguards, combined with the high quality of the component
parts, mean trouble-free operation with minimum maintenance.

COMPATIBILITY WITH THE ALFA 2000

Our testing program included countless power runs of the Turbo motor on our engine
dynamometer. In addition, it was installed in our Alfetta GT and driven under day-to-day
conditions for 8,000 miles over a year's time. The engine was then removed from the car
and inspected. During these tests conducted on the finalized version of the Shankle
Turbo, there was no measurable wear or failure of any engine or turbo component, and
no failure of any other part of the car. A Shankle Turbo equipped Spider-GN or
Alfetta-Sprint Veloce is quiet, powertul, and reliable.

BOLT-ON INSTALLATION
As the nation's leading supplier of Alfa high pertormance parts, we have gained broad
experience in designing systems for installation by the Alfa owner. In addition to all the
major components, the accessory brackets, adapters, hardware, clamps, hose,
gaskets, fittings, illustrated instructions, and all the related bits and pieces necessary to
complete the installation are included. The experienced do-it-yourself Alfa owner using
normal hand tools will encounter no difficulty with the Shankle Turbo. The only outside
help needed would be in fabricating a tailpipe for the turbo muffler. VJithin reasonable
limits, we provide everything to insure ahassle-free installation. Should an unforeseen
problem occur, you can call and we can work it out together.

GRAPHITE OIL ADDITIVE

Available in 32 fl. oz. bottles, one half a bottle is sufficient per oil change for your Alfa.
This results in about one percent by weight of colloidal graphite. This is the concentra-
tion used in Arco Graphite Motor Oil, and allows you to choose the brand and viscosity
oil you like best and add the wear and friction reducer inherent in colloidal graphite.

ALUMASEAL STOP LEAK
Alfa Romeo recommends this sealant for your cooling system. It has been proven
effective in stopping most of the small water leaks that Alfa seem to have a tendency to
develop. It also protects the cooling system from corrosion. One Sin oz. tube each six

ALFETTA DRIVE SHAFT DONUTS
The key to untangling the web of confusion that exists regarding replacement driveshaft
couplings (donuts) for Alfetta models is your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). It is
located on a metal plate between the windshield and the top of the dash board on the
driver's side of your car. There was a Factory recall program on some cars,so be sure to
find and record your VIN so it will be at your disposal. Then refer to the information given
here, and you will get the proper donut for your car.

The list of VIN's below is to identify those cars involved in the Factory recall due to drive
shaft donut failure.
5246
Alfetta GT,49 states .........................11629,from #000 3525 to 000 4768
Alfetta GT,California ........................11615,from #000 1953 to 000 2587
Alfetta Sedan,49 states ......................11633,from #000 3501 to 000 3855
Alfetta Sedan,49 states ......................11633,from #000 4001 to 000 4210
Alfetta Sedan, California .....................11634,from #000 1601 to 000 2065
Alfetta Sedan, California .....................11634,from #000 2501 to 000 2558

All cars included on the above list are originally equipped with donuts as listed in the
"Type B" category shown on the table below.

Cars that were produced prior to those listed in the recall table use replacement donuts
from the "Type A" category.

Cars that were produced after those listed in the recall table use replacement donuts
from the "Type C"category, including 116.58 Series cars.

If your car is one which falls into the recall category, but you do not know whether or not the 5247
modification has been carried out, you can find out by calling Alfa Romeo,Inc. Their phone
numbers are: (201)871-1234 in New Jersey, or(213)513-1581 in California. They have
a complete record of the cars which have been modified. Be sure to have your VIN ready
when you call. Another way to find out is to take your car to your local Alfa dealer and ask
him to physically inspect it to determine if it has been modified per the recall.

If your car has not been modified, then you should get it done as soon as possible at your
local dealer. If it has, then you can order replacement donutsfrom the"Type C"category.

CARBURETOR SYNCHRONIZi4TION AND IDLE ADJUSTMENT

Preliminary Synchronization of Dual Carburetors(Weber, Dell'Orto, Solex)
The carburetors must be synchronized in order to deliver equal amounts of air.ifuel mixture to each individual cylinder. Synchroniza-
tion of the carburetors is accomplished by adjusting the synchronizing lever screw #1 between the two carburetors. On most
carburetors(except late Weber DCOE's which use a brass dished plug) a preliminary adjustment can be accomplished by removing
one blanking screw from each carburetor. These cover the progression circuit holes, and are adjacent to the idle jet screws. With the
blanking screws removed, it is possible to see the position of the buttertly (throttle plate) through the small holes. Adjust the throttle
coupling screw so that the butterflies in each carburetor are in the same position while sighting down through the holes. An alternate
method for preliminary synchronization is as follows: Disconnect the throttle rod from the ball on the throttle control lever #2. Slacken
the screws #3 and #1 to their full extent. Pull up the throttle control lever #2 all the way so that the throttles of the rear carburetor are
fully closed, then turn in the screw #1 until the tip of the screw just makes contact with the tang on lever #2.

Idle Mixture Adjustment

Idle mixture is adjusted using the idle adjusting screw(s). Whether adjusting a single down draft or dual side draft carburetors the
procedure is the same. Run-in the idle adjusting screw until the engine speed drops, then slowly run the screw out until maximum RPM is
reached. On some types of carburetors, further unscrewing of the screw will result in no RPM change, and finally the speed will drop. For
best fuel economy, the idle screw should be set at the leanest (farthest in position) at which maximum RPM is attained. On dual
carburetors, the carburetors must be synchronized first, then the idle mixture can be adjusted one cylinder at a time. One a new
installation of carburetor, when the engine has not been run before, it is necessary to get the engine running enough to fine tune the
synchronization, and then to make final idle adjustment. On initial start-up,the idle mixture will probably not be right. Run in the idle screws
all the way, and then turn them out about one turn (the number of turns out varies from 314 of a turn to 4turns depending on the make and
model of the carburetor). Try starting the engine without the choke on. While cranking the engine, pump the throttle activating the pump
jets to provide a rich starting mixture. Get the engine to run at a speed above idle where the other circuits in the carburetor will come in.
Warm up the engine at a high idle speed(1500-2000 RPM). Then try to get the engine to idle. If it does not idle at all, try running in the idle
speed screw #3 to let more air/fuel in. Then turn each of the idle mixture screws the same amount,in or out until the engine will idle even
though roughly. Now proceed with the final synchronization of the carburetors and final idle mixture adjustment.

Final Synchronization of Dual Carburetors

With the engine running at normal operating temperatures, the synchronization of the carburetors can be tested using one, or a
combination, of the following methods:
1. Disconnect orshort-out the spark plug wire of each cylinder, one at a time. The engine RPM should drop the same amount on all
cylinders.
2. One at a time, run in the idle mixture adjusting screws #M.If the carburetors are synchronized properly, the engine speed will drop
the same amount for each cylinder when the screw is run in and the fuel is shut off.
3. Obtain a piece of hose about 3 feet long with an inside diameter of between 114 to 112 inch. With the air cleaners removed, place
one end of the tube in one air intake of one carburetor. Listen to the amount of "hiss" present, which will indicate the amount of air
being drawn through the carburetor barrel. Alternately listen to one throat in the front and one throat in the rear carburetor. Adjust
the synchronizer screw until the "hiss" has the same sound.
4. Use a synchrometer such as the Shankle Order Number 5055 to measure the air flow through the carburetor barrel. Adjust the
synchronizer screw to obtain equal flow through the front and rear carburetors.

Fine adjustment of synchronization is best accomplished by using methods 1 or 2 described above to obtain the smoothest idle and
the most uniform idle speed reduction when each cylinder, one by one, is shorted out.

Note: Sometimes the buttertly shaft in a single carburetor may become twisted resulting in one buttertly being open more than the other
and allowing more air to go to one cylinder than the other. The tests 1 through 4 used on the two barrels of the same carburetors will show
this. To fix this problem the carburetor must be removed and the shaft twisted so that both butterflies close at exactly the same time.

METHODS OF ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON

We have established several procedures and conventions to simplify camshaft comparison and analysis. First, the camshaft is profiled
and the data plotted on a graph to get a complete picture of the camshaft grind. We have elected to evaluate the cam duration at .050 in.
cam lift to eliminate misleading duration valves introduced by different cam ramping(slow or rapid opening and closing of the valve for the
first few thousandths of an inch off the valve seat). At this amount of lift we can be sure that the cam is definitely beginning to open or close
the valve. Note also that we are not considering running valve clearances which also effect duration, i.e., the tighter the valve clearance
the greater the duration. By using .050 in. cam lift we can thus compare all cams on an equal and realistic basis.

The lobe center is one of the most useful parameters to compare cam timing. It singularly defines the cam timing position and any cam
timing may be compared irrespective of the manner in which the cam timing is specified. Cam timing is not standardized and is given
in many ways, i.e., without clearance, with clearance, with a checking clearance, or with clearance at a specified valve lift.
Computation of lobe centers is as follows:

DISCUSSION

In this section various camshafts available for Alfa Romeo 4 cylinder 1300, 1600, 1750 and late 2000 engines are discussed and their
characteristics defined.

With the above definitions we can now look at the Alfa Romeo cams of the past 23 years(see Table), make some observations and
draw some conclusions based on the information available and our many hours of dyno testing.

Duration and Valve Lift. There has been a general trend to increased duration and valve lift to increase the performance of Alfa
engines. Increased duration yields greater power at higher RPMs with a reduction of low speed torque. Greater valve lifts (without
increased duration) yield more power without much change in the nature of the power curve. A notable exception to this general trend
is the 2000 F.I.(U.S.A)engine in which the duration has been decreased.

Overlap and Lobe Centers. Here the trend has been toward closer lobe centers and increased overlap. Up to a point this yields low
RPM torque with little reduction of top end power. While we have not measured fuel consumption with respect to overlap, we would
assume there is some loss in fuel economy due to increased scavange flow during the overlap period. The single carburetted normal
1300 and 1600 engines are set up with small overlap presumably for economy. This short overlap period may, in part, explain the
tendency for these engines to burn exhaust valves since exhaust valve temperatures will be higher due to less scavange flow cooling
during the overlap period. The European 2000, reflects the trend to increased performance with the greatest overlap and closest lobe
centers of all the street Alfa cam timings to data with the exception of the 1300 S.S. The early 2000 fuel injected USA engine departs
from the general trend with a 12 degree retard of the intake cam and a reduction of overlap for the purpose of emissions reduction. On
the 1975-1976 49 State versions the overlap was further reduced by advancing the exhaust cam 12 degrees. With the installation of
the catalytic converter the overlap has been increased again to about pre-emissions settings of 102 degree lobe centers on intake and
exhaust cams on the 1977 California engines. Thus some low RPM torque has been regained by the use of the catalytic converter
with more overlap while still meeting emission requirements.

Cam Timing and Pertormance. Two generalizations can be made about Alfa camshafts and cam timing. One is that the lobe center
position for maximum performance is abou the same for all grinds be it the mildest or the most radical. The Alfa engines all respond well to
lobe center of 100° to 102° both intake and exhaust for all around performance. Maximum horsepower is generally achieved with lobe
centers of 104° to 108° intake and exhaust although the gain in top end power is usually less than the loss in low RPM performance.
Closer lobe centers of 97° to 99° result in increased low RPM power. The second generalization is that as duration is increased high RPM
power goes up at the sacrifice of low RPM pertormance. Pertormance ranking in the Table is based on duration as the major criteria, the
higher the pertormance rank the greater the duration.

VALVE SPRING RECOMMENDATIONS

Stock Alfa valve springs are adequate for use with some high performance cams 6205, 5417, 5418, 5416, 6216. The cams 5417,
5418,5416,6216 can be used'with stock springs, but Shankle high performance springs are recommended. If you are doing a valve
job or any other head work in conjunction with installing these cams, the Shankle high performance springs should be installed. Cams
5410,5413,5414 require greater spring loads and Shankle high performance springs must be used. The table below may be used as
a guideline for valve spring selection.

Minimum Rotating Clearance Between Pistons and Valves

Intake — .070 in.

Exhaust — .075 in.

This clearance is determined with the engine assembled and the engine turned in the direction of rotation. The "clay method" may be
used or this may be checked by inserting a piece of soft solder wire into the spark plug hole, curving it between the valve and piston,
and rotating the engine over TDC in the direction of rotation. Then remove the solder and measure the thickness of the squeezed
portion to determine the rotating clearance between the piston and valve.

UNDERSTANDING AND CHECKING THE THERMOSTATIC ACTUATOR

The thermostatic actuator on the fuel injection pump controls the fuel mixture supplied to the engine as a function of engine
temperature. The temperature sending end of the fluid-filled device is installed in the water manifold and the piston end is attached to
the fuel injection pump. As water temperature increases, the fluid in the actuator expands pushing on the piston which acts through a
series of levers to reduce the amount of fuel delivered. With time the piston seal may leak. When it does, the piston retracts more when
cold, and does not extend as much when the engine is warm. This in turn throws the fuel injection pump out of tune. Complete failure of
the thermostatic actuator results in harder starting and excessive fuel consumption due to too rich a fuel mixture. Preliminary
adjustment of the fuel injection pump to position the levers properly utilizes dummy thermostatic actuators of various prescribed
lengths to simulate lengths of the thermostatic actuator when cold and hot. Final adjustment is by adjusting the long linkage rod to
compensate for minor variations in the operation of the thermostatic actuator. If the thermostatic actuator is too far out of specification
then the fuel injection pump can not be tuned properly using standard factory procedures and must be replaced. To check the
thermostatic actuator remove it from the car and check the protrusion of the piston on the actuator. The dimension from the end of the
piston to the mounting surface should be 23±1mm. This measurement must only be done after the actuator has stabilized at a
temperature of 20°C(68°F)for at least 15 minutes. A further check may be made by immersing the water manifold end in water at SO°C
(176°F). The projection should be about 28mm or more.

One of the major advantages of our replacement Sure Start mechanical actuator is the precise and consistent lengths in the cold start
20mm and hot run 28mm positions. Once a good tune is established then it will hold.

IMPROVED HANDLING
AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
A good handling street automobile is a car that accelerates, stops, and turns in a predictable fashion, giving the driver a feeling of control
and security while providing a comfortable ride over the many different road conditions encountered. Generally the ride qualities most
enthusiast drivers seem to like are: a ride that is firm but not harsh; minimum body roll and neutral steering in fast cornering; minimum
nose dive under hard braking; and good straight line stability. This is what feels good to the knowledgeable driver. He knows by feel,
instinct, and experience what qualities a good handling car must have. However, today only a few cars mare made for the enthusiast
driver who represents a small portion of the car buying market. Both the 1750 and 2000 105/115 series GN and Spider, and the 116
series Alfetta and GN6 are softly sprung, understeering cars fitted with front and rear sway bars and non-adjustable shock absorbers. To
those who have stepped from a conventional sedan into an Alfa, the feeling is one of a much better handling car. But to the enthusiast
driver there is more, much more to be had. By stiffening up the suspension all the way round, the Alfa can be made to handle better and
feel better to the discerning driver, yet maintain a comfortable ride. Gone is the extreme body roll in turns, the heavy understeer, the front
end dive, the somewhat unsettling feeling when braking into a turn, and the lack of quick and positive response to steering commands.
Briefly, the following elements are all directly involved in the quest for improved handling.
Understeer. Feels like the car wants to go straight when going around a turn. Consequently, the wheels have to be excessively
turned into the corner. The front tires will then lose traction first, causing the car to plow straight ahead.
Oversteer. Feels like the rear end is going to "come around." In the extreme, the steering amount becomes exaggerated to the point
where the wheels have to be turned out and away from the turn. The rear tires will lose traction first, causing the rear end to come
around and spin out of control. Neutral or slight understeer is most desirable, although for some types of driving, slaloms for example,
oversteer may be advantageous.
Dive. Under hard braking the front of the car pitches forward, the front end down, the rear end up. This is not only uncomfortable to the
driver but transfers most of the weight of the car to the front tires reducing braking and steering efficiency.
Body roll. When cornering the car body rolls on the suspension toward the outside of the turn. Excessive body roll gives the driver the
uncomfortable sensation that the car wants to roll over. This roll adversely acts on the front suspension geometry to cause the top of
the outside front wheel to tilt outward, or conversely the bottom to tuck under the car. This rolls the fire onto its outside edge which
reduces contact with the road. This is a major cause of understeer. Body roll also causes weight transfer to the outside putting more
cornering load on the outside tires.
Camber. The angle of tilt of the front wheel with respect to the ground. Positive camber is when the top of the wheel is further out from
the center of the car than the bottom of the wheel. Negative is when the top of the wheel is tilted in toward the center of the car. Idealy,
under cornering the wheel should be vertical to the ground (zero camber), but body roll tends to make the camber go position on the
loaded outside wheel. Adjusted suspension geometry, sway bars, and springs are used primarily to resist camber change, and to
keep as large a fire patch as possible on the road during various attitudes.
Shock absorbers. There is some confusion as to what shock absorbers do. Shocks do not reduce body roll or front end dive. They do
not effect the suspension stiffness. Their basic function is to slow down or dampen the action of the suspension springs. Without
shocks, the springs will overreact to bumps and the fire will not follow the surface of the road. Too soft shocks result in the fire
oscillating too much over bumps and losing contact with the surtace. Shocks that are too hard yield an uncomfortable ride, and on
rough surfaces cause the suspension to skate or skip over the changing surface. Adjustable shocks are desirable to achieve the right
ride quality for local conditions and driver "feel".
Sway bars and springs. Anti-sway bars(or more precisely anti-roll bars) are used to reduce body roll. These link the car body with
the right and left side of the front and rear suspension. These bars counteract the tendency for the body to roll in cornering by pushing
back against the chassis when it tries to roll on the suspension. This counter-reactive force against the car body puts more load on the
outside wheel in cornering. Stiffer springs will reduce roll and dive to improve handling. However, on a street car it is not practical to
stiffen up the springs (or torsion bars) too much because of the less than smooth road surfaces often encountered. Although a
reduction in dive and roll would result, too stiff springs do not allow the suspensions, wheels, and tires to follow the contour of the
surface resulting in a loss of fire contact with the road surface. Typically for street machines, heavier sway bars are used to control
body roll and improve handling without creating a harsh ride. However, balance between front and rear must be maintained to
properly control understeer/oversteer. In a corner as the body rolls to the outside, the front sway bar pushes back on the car body to
resist this tendency. This results in an increase in the cornering load on the outside front tire, increasing the understeer up to the point
that the front fire will lose traction. With a rear sway bar, some of the body roll forces will be counteracted on by the rear suspension.
This will reduce some of the cornering load that the front suspension must carry, and will reduce the tendency for understeer.
However, if too stiff a rear sway bar is used oversteer will result. Thus, by using front and rear sway bars of appropriate stiffness to
balance out the car, higher cornering speeds can be achieved.
Tire pressure. In cornering, even if the camber change is minimal, the fire tends to roll under the wheel. This reduces the traction force of
the fire by reducing the surface area in contact with the road. We can reduce this tendency by increasing the fire pressure, up to the
maximum recommended by the manufacturer. If we want to reduce understeer we can increase front fire pressure to the maximum, and
then adjust the rear pressure to balance out the handling. This only works up to a point, but is useful in final tuning of the suspension.
Wide wheels. Fitting of wider wheel rims reduces the tendency for the fire to roll under during cornering and will increase the
cornering speed. Wider tires are a definite help, but to realize their maximum effectiveness wider wheels should befitted.
Weight reduction. Cornering speeds, braking and acceleration are all increased with a reduction in car weight. Cornering is
especially effected by weight at the extremeties of the car such as bumpers which increase the polar movement of inertia resulting in
an increase of understeer/oversteer.
Lowering. Handling is also improved when the car is lowered. This itself reduces body roll and front end dive since the center of
gravity of the car body is lowered as it sits on the suspension.
Adjustable Arms. As the body rolls on the suspension, understeer results. This is primarily due to the lose of fire patch when the
camber changes on the front wheel. A way to compensate for this is to adjust the camber at the suspension control arm from the
normal slightly positive(out of the top)to slightly negative (in at the top of the wheel) position. This decambering of the front end keeps
the wheel more vertically positioned in the turn.
Since 1959, Shankle Automotive Engineering has been involved in racing Alfa's. We have combined these personal race experi-
enceswith engineering and technology to develop the components necessary to improve the handling of the street driven Alfa. These
products include stiffer torsion bars, springs, and sway bars; wide wheels, light weight bumpers, adjustable control arms, and
adjustable shocks for most of the Alfa models.
