I. INTRODUCTION

I.1 Study Background

Nowadays, social media is a pivotal thing for everyone. It cannot be denied due to the
needs of modern era. Social media has big impact in its deploying on all over the world,
including Indonesia. In 2015 it stated that the numbers of active social media users in
Indonesia has reached 79 million people (Noviandari, 2015). The users can take at least 1
minute until hours on their social media account. It shows that the society of Indonesia has
big interest on this trend. Social media provides several facilities which make number of
people easily access something, including their needs. Yet, there is also some people use this
benefit in inappropriate ways, especially teenagers. For example, many of teenagers uploaded
their privacy into their Facebook homepage which is a public platform. This instance is not
matched with what Facebook is intended to. Thus, social media actually can be one of the
concern problems that we need to overcome. That concern problem is possible to happen in
Indonesia including the city of education, Yogyakarta. In 2014, a group of high school
students had an academic violation issue caused by social media. One of the students hosted a
private pool party at her house and the dresscode that they used were inappropriate outfits.
Then, they posted inappropriate pictures of themselves while they were partying on
Instagram. They got caught by the school’s principal through one of the students’ parents. It
made the party host got expelled from school and the guests which are the students were
prohibited to enter the school for 1 month. The fact that it already happened in one of high
schools in Yogyakarta, proved that the problems caused by social media spread everywhere
even in the city that upholds traditional values. Therefore, the researchers want to investigate
the other negative effects caused by social media on teenagers’ social behavior and whether it
can cause moral degradation on students in Budi Mulia Dua (BMD) International High
School.

I.2 Problem Formulation

Social media is a pivoral thing for everyone including Yogyakarta’s citizen. It can be
called as benefit because it has several facilities that beneficial for human’s needs. Yet,
there are also some people use this benefit in inappropriate ways, especially teenagers.
The fact that it already happened in one of high schools in Yogyakarta, proved that the
problems spread everywhere even in old school city. Therefore, the researchers questions
were:
a) How social media negatively impact teenagers’ social behavior of students in Budi
Mulia Dua High School?
b) Why social media can negatively affect teenagers’ social behavior of students in Budi
Mulia Dua High school?

I.3 Study Objective

The purpose of this mini research is to investigate how and why social media negatively
impacts teenagers’ behavior of students in Budi Mulia Dua High School.

II. THEORITICAL REVIEW

Lisa Buyer (2011) once said that social media is today’s most transparent, engaging and
interactive form of public relations. It combines the true grit of real time content with the
beauty of authentic peer-to-peer communication. As a matter of fact, social media has
attracted more than billions people in various age, especially teenagers. Social media serves
several facilities which can make people to be pleased and think that it is really useful for
them. In Indonesia, numbers of teenager get addicted using social media. Unfortunately, less
number of teenager in this country utilize social media inappropriately different from the
original usage, for example they used to share their privacy into social media. It is
unnecessary thing to share because it can humiliate them. Beside of humiliating the teenagers,
social media can affect teenagers’ brains work. According to Dondi (2016), she stated that
using social media through mobile phone can cause a syndrome that demonstrates human’s
bodies rapid assimilation of a trigger that is not actually there called Phantom Vibration
Syndrome. This syndrome commonly happens among teenagers. According to a survey held
by Randi Smith, Ph.D., 90 percent of 290 college students said that they felt the phantom
phone vibration syndrome and 40 percent of the college students said that it happened at least
once a week. Randi Smith, Ph.D. stated that the reason why phantom phone vibration
syndrome happened is because people are too attached to their phone, that is why they sense a
fear (Dondi, 2015).
III. RESEARCH METHOD

III.1 Research Design

This research will use qualitative and quantitative methods. The researchers will
spread 45 questionnaires that include interview questions through Google drive to the
respondents in Budi Mulia Dua High School students. An observation will be conduct as
well to support the accuracy and completeness of the research. The observation will be
done through observing some social media platform that commonly used by teenagers in
Yogyakarta.

III.2 Data Analysis

In this case, the researchers will analyze the data from both questionnaires and
observations. The researchers will manage the questionnaires for proceeding the
qualitative and quantitative part, the difference will be inside the content of
questionnaires. Then the result data of questionnaire will be calculated and the graphics
will be drawn based on the calculation’s results.
IV. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

4.1 Findings

Upon this research, the researchers encouraged the students of Budi Mulia Dua International
High School to the questionnaires based on their experience towards social media. The researchers
deployed the questionnaires via online and it was addressed directly to the students of BMD
International High School at the age rate of 15-18 years old from both female and male students. The
researcher distributed the questionnaires with a goal of recognizing the negative impacts on social
media in BMD International High School. As an outcome from the online questionnaires which was
posted on Google Drive, the researchers obtained responses from 47 respondents. Variety of outcomes

Based on the questionnaires, the researchers asked the respondents opinion about the positive
and negative impacts of social media. From the results that the researchers obtained, there were 3
aspects of positive impacts on social media. First, social media was informative. For BMD
International High school students, social media was one of places to look for information regarding
university and worldwide news. Second aspect, social media was one of places to connect with
people. Eventhough most people lived far away, they could still connect to each other through social
media. Nowadays, there were many kinds of social media that could help people to communicate.
And the last aspect was social media was entertaining. Many features on social media were unique
enough to attract people to use it. Beside of its positive impacts, apparently social media also had
negative impacts;

Laziness 3

The researchers made a table (Table 1) based on the respondent’s point of views. Social
media caused several bad habits, according to the respondents the bad habits are addictive (17
respondents), cyber bullying (9 respondents), anti-social (8 respondents), wasting time (6
respondents) and laziness (3 respondents) . They said that social media is addictive when they use it
for many times, because it leads them to be lazy, a loner, and also wasting their time. Another case is
that they thought that social media can lead to cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is the act of harassing
someone online by sending or posting mean messages, usually anonymously (dictionary.com).
The popularity of social media certainly made several trends in internet. Then the researchers
questioned the respondents regarding the trends which appeared in social media, they responded
social media trends nowadays were Don’t Judge Challenge (internet videos), Eating Corn with Drill
(internet videos) and Running Man Challenge (application of tv show in real life). Beside asking the
respondents about the trends on social media, the researchers also aasked whether the respondents
followed the trends or did not. The results showed that almost all of them answered no, it is because
they were not interested to follow it.

4.2. Discussion

Lisa Buyer (2011) once said that social media is today’s most transparent, engaging and
interactive form of public relations. It combines the true grit of real time content with the beauty of
authentic peer-to-peer communication. Social media is one of the most happening things right now, it
has some impacts for its users. The impacts could be negative and positive. Based on the data that the
researchers got about the perspectives of BMD International High School Students on Social Media,
49% of the respondents thought that social media brings both negative and positive impacts, 30% of
the respondents thought that it brings negative impacts, and 21% of the respondents thought that it
brings positive impacts. Therefore, in this research, the researchers would like to describe more about
the negative impacts of social media.

The result of the questionnaires showed that most of BMD International High School
Students thought social media gives more negative impacts than positive impacts. The researcher also
asked the reasons why social media gives negative impacts, then the respondents responded that social
media causes some bad habits such as addictive, wasting time, cyber-bullying, anti-social and
laziness.

Based on the results that the researchers got from spreading the quetionnaires to the students
of BMD International High School about the negative effects of social media, most of the students
answered that social media can lead the users to be in positive or negative way, it just depends on the
users itself. If the users cannot control themselves on using their social media, it can lead them to have
bad habits such as addictive, wasting time, cyber-bullying, anti-social, and laziness. Out of 46
respondents, 17 respondents said that it is addictive because it leads them to be lazy, a loner, and
wasting their time. If the users use the social media properly, then it will lead them to a positive way.
And if the users use the social media inappropriately, it can lead them to a negative way.
V. CONCLUSION

5.1. Conclusion

From the research that the researchers conducted on students of BMD International High
School, the researchers concluded that Instagram is the most used social media among BMD
International High school students. Most of the respondents felt the negative impacts from using
social media. They described the negative impacts as bad habits; causing addiction, wasting time,
cyber-bullying, anti-social, and laziness. However, some of the respondents said that the negative
impacts caused by how the users use the social media. They also thought that social media can also
bring positive impacts if the users use it appropriately.

5.2. Recommendation

To prevent the BMD International High School students from negative impacts of social
media, it can be anticipated by atrract the BMD International High School students to use the social
media in positive way by showing them what social media was actually made for, so that they will not
use the social media negatively. The next recommendation is for the next research. For the next
research, the current researchers recommend that the next researchers should make the data more
valid, like interviewing the BMD International High School students’ parents about their opinion on
their childs behaviors after knew and used social media often. With that kind of method, the data will
be more valid.
