ABSTRACT

Math is a subject that is very important. We use math in our everyday life. Knowing math is power, and
every human must know the subject math for them to be able to live equally with others. Math is a very hard
subject, every student even the brightest one has a hard time solving math problems and equation, because of
this lots of students in elementary and in high school hate the subject math. What is the role of the teacher
when students hate math? That is the question that will be answered in this research the role of the teacher in
his students when they hate the subject math.
The research is about to answer the question, why do students hate math. The research will know the
reason behind math hater students, what, why and how.
What is the role of the teacher in the student who does hate math?
The proponent have choose the descriptive research as the research design which is very applicable to
the study, where in the proponent has chosen the descriptive-survey as a basis for gathering data and the very
appropriate research design for the said study.
The proponent has chosen this kind of research design because the proponent believes that the subject
really knows the problem very well than theories and other types of descriptive research. This type of
descriptive research is very efficient for gathering important facts, opinions and ideas of the subject.
The subject was taken in time element and convenience of the proponent. The subjects were taken from
San Jose del Monte High School, because the proponent resides near the said school. The entire census will be
recorded. Descriptive survey was used in this study; unrestricted random sampling design was applied. Why
students hate math? The reasons that the researcher has put in to his graphical presentation were based from
his observation on schools and mostly on his experience as a high school student at the past. Some of the
reason comes from the internet sites, some them come from magazines and some from unpublished research.
The researcher has compiled and has specified the reason why students hate math in to four reasons as shown
in the graphical representation.
As a researcher and a future teacher I will give my conclusion to the problem that has answered and has been
encountered. Student unlikeness in the subject math should be counter reacted by teacher by the use of some
methods that avoid boredom, example of this methods are groupings, board games, group report and
motivational quizzes. As a teacher you should avoid anything that hinders your student interest in listening in
your subject, especially is your subject is math, the role of the teacher if their student hate math must be
implemented in our public schools, don’t put the blame on
your students on how they got their grade, you should look on your lesson plan and see how your lesson
works and put a twist on your lesson that children would be interested listening to you, always give your best
to you day to day lesson so that in the grading period wouldn’t regret anything.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Math is a subject that is very important. We use math in our everyday life. Knowing math is power, and

every human must know the subject math for them to be able to live equally with others. Math is a very hard

subject, every student even the brightest one has a hard time solving math problems and equation, because of

this lots of students in elementary and in high school hate the subject math. What is the role of the teacher

when students hate math? That is the question that will be answered in this research the role of the teacher in

his students when they hate the subject math.

Statement of the Problem

The research is about to answer the question, why do students hate math. The research will know the

reason behind math hater students, what, why and how.

1. What is the role of the teacher in the student who does hate math?

If the study has been successful the proponent will help math teacher on how to improve and what to do o

their daily math lesson so that their student would love to listen and interact to the academic learning time.

The aim of the study is to aid the math lesson sickness of the students and to help the to be more prominent

in math for bigger and greater opportunities in the future. The research will be finished after 60 days or two

months to be exact, with the number of 20 subject o descriptive survey and data gathering, the research

administration will be held at CSJDM Bulacan in San Jose del Monte High School.

Significance of the Study

The study is about why student hate math , the proponent want to know the root cause of math haters

and if the proponent was successful knowing the cause of math haters, the proponent will give answers for a
healthy math subject in a classroom where the students absorbs the lesson with joy and great understanding.

The research may help to the math problems in high schools, and may help to accumulate knowledge gap in

math subjects.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is limited only to math problems encountered in San Jose del Monte High School. In sections

2 or 3 2nd yr high school, the research instrument is descriptive test, the issues regarding the topic limitations is

only 4 issues written in the statement of the problem. Responses on the descriptive test were recognize and

categorize according to the teachers previous lesson to find out if the significant difference of the response on

the problem why student hate math exists.

Data gathering employed the questionnaire which the researcher admits the limitation of bias. Thus

the questionnaire was supplemented by observation, interview, and analysis of school directives including

circulars, memoranda. Journals, articles, books, published and unpublished thesis or dissertation bases for

formulating the questionnaire.

The study focuses only to the 2 nd yr students of San Jose del Monte National High School section 2-3 ,

20 students. All written in the study were true in the subject concerned and true to finish also in the given

period of time.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Related Theories

Every student has a favorite subject, and if they like one subject there is a tendency that they might

hate another subject. One important factor for a success in getting high grades is to gain the appetite in

studying your subject very well. Most of the students nowadays hate the subject math, the reason why they
hate math are obvious and common. What should the teacher do to aid the problem of their students?

Teacher must be patient in teaching math; they should always give activities to avoid sleepiness. They should

also posses’ desirable attitudes and values toward their students. We should determine the basic need of the

student for them to like the subject math.

Local Related Literature

Star Teacher vol. 14, page 14, November 1992, Nerrisa Macarayan stated in her article ` as a teacher in

math, it is so stressing that you student hate your subject, so everyday I gave them lots and lots of activities so

they will not be bored, most of the student hate math because it is boring. So f you add a twist to your lesson I

am sure that your student will love your subject, especially math.

Modern Teacher vol.7, page 235 November 2000, Evelina M. Vicencio stated in her article, ` most of my

student hate the subject math, and as math teacher I must do something to aid that problem. Before we start

our class, I ask some of my students to give energizers for humor and to give energy for my students. I give

short quizzes about my topic, and when they thought that It is easy I will inject the hard questions, using this

technique I get the attention of my student in the subject math.

The research paradigm show the relationship of the input, process and output. The IPO goes like this,

when the teacher(input) in math, gave aid to their student that hates the subject math for their boredom like

activities and board work (process) the output is their student will be proficient in math, they will have

excellence in the subject and competency in the global standards.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The proponent have choose the descriptive research as the research design which is very applicable to

the study, where in the proponent has chosen the descriptive-survey as a basis for gathering data and the very

appropriate research design for the said study.

The proponent has chosen this kind of research design because the proponent believes that the

subject really knows the problem very well than theories and other types of descriptive research. This type of

descriptive research is very efficient for gathering important facts, opinions and ideas of the subject.

POPULATION AND SAMPLE OF THE STUDY

The Respondents

The subject was taken in time element and convenience of the proponent. The subjects were taken

from San Jose del Monte High School, because the proponent resides near the said school. The entire census

will be recorded. Descriptive survey was used in this study; unrestricted random sampling design was applied.

The Research Instrument

The proponent used descriptive survey questionnaire for gathering data in determining the effect of

teacher when student does not like the subject math. The descriptive survey sheet as designed by the

investigator consist items from books,

magazines and unpublished research. Informal interview of the researcher was also included in constructing

the questionnaire.
The first draft of questionnaire was submitted to the teacher for advice correction and suggestion.

Several changes were made. Some items considered relevant to the study were discarded. The revised form of

descriptive survey was used for gathering important facts and data.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The questionnaire is been analyze true, valid, and reliable source for the research as data source, the

proponent has sought the approval of the questionnaires to the person in authority where it is correct in first

draft to final draft, and has asked permission to the teacher in the engage time were the survey has been held

to allow the proponent to conduct a study. After the approval the proponent has conducted the survey in

March 4, 2012 3pm-6pm with 30 questionnaire and 20 respondents returned the questionnaire.

DATA PROCESSING AND STATISTICAL TREATMENT

The data has been process through a long and bloody manual tabulation of thoughts and ideas the

respondents put into the questionnaire. Most of the questionnaires were not answered the expected number

of population was not met by

the researcher so he has to give the questionnaires again and the researcher gain the exact data he need for

data gathering to be process in the data processing method.

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS, ANALYSIS AND DATA INTERPRETATION

Chapter IV is the most important part of a research, because you can see the data presentation of the

problem and you can configure what is the data gathered about the problem. Chapter IV will answer the

question in chapter I with the support of table and explanation.

What is the reason why students hate math.?

The researcher has gathered data about the fact that students hate math, and the reasons behind it

are in this chart.Base on observation and related studies, these are the reason why student hate math, the

researcher experience the main reason why I don’t like math, that’s why he put some of the data base on his

experience but most of the data were gathered through descriptive test.

1.What is the role of the teacher in the student who does hate math?

Most of the answer on the descriptive survey was agree, it proves that teachers never quit teaching

math subject even if it is hard, they use any method that would catch the attention of the students, data

gathered about the problem is illustrated. Most of the answer to this question are strongly agree most of the

teacher agree to the sentence.

INDICATORS F %distribution Rank

According to the chart, most of the teachers from public school agree in the given survey sheet, this

are teachers that has concern for their students to learn from their subject and pass their subject with enough

wisdom. Higher case of agree in private

schools teacher, most of the question in the descriptive survey was being used by math teachers in public

school in their day to day class discussion.
