INTRODUCTION
The core value of the National Teaching Council (NTC) conducting the licensure examination
for teachers is to professionalize the teaching field. The licensure exams, will expose newly
trained teachers to realize the actual classroom management they are expected to practice
when they are finally posted to the Ghanaian classroom.
The licensure examination covers three (3) broad areas

Instructors or teachers frequently remark that a major reason that students don’t receive
higher grades on essay exams is because they do not follow directions even when these
directions are included in the question. These instructors add that many students don’t seem
to know how to recognize words in questions that give directions on how to construct an
essay answer and what to include.
A list of important words in essay questions has been given below to help students answer
essay questions with the kinds of responses that instructors seek. These words are called KEY
WORDS!
One suggestion many students have found helpful is to mark all the KEY WORDS
in all test directions and question before beginning to answer. This makes it
easier to organize an answer, know what to say, and know when enough has
been written. If there is ever doubt about the clarity of a test question, ask the
professor for clarification before beginning your answer.
KEY WORDS
Explain, step by step or point by point
ANALYZE while writing. Pay attention to who,
what, where, when, why, and how in
the answer. Include strengths,
weaknesses, pros and cons, research
for and against.
COMPARE Stress similarities and differences
between objects, concepts, or ideas.
(For example: “Compare Operant and
Classical Conditioning)
CONTRAST Emphasize the dissimilarities,
differences, or unique and
distinguishing characteristics in the
response.
DEFINE Clearly state the meaning, list
qualities, traits, or characteristics.
DESCRIBE Include traits, characteristics, or
retell a story including those facts
that summarize the essential
features.
DISCUSS Present significant characteristics,
pros and cons, pertinent research,
and the significance of each.
Develop the arguments for and
against or analyze the advantages,
disadvantages, or problems.
EVALUATE Emphasize positive and negative
aspects. Include opinions and
support these with some kind of
proof, information, or examples.
Normally, instructors don’t like
unsupported opinions from college
students.
EXAMPLES Use brief stories, analogies,
relevant events, or similar instance
to support general statements and
main ideas.
EXPLAIN Give reasons or justifications for
something, or present causes,
rationalizations, or how or why
something occurred.
INTERPRET Cover existing understandings of a
topic. Paraphrase, translate,
condense, simplify, and/or diagnose
as you write.
JUSTIFY Present rationale, reasons for
conclusions, recommendations, or
results. Use proof, research,
examples, or quotes to support
justifications.
LIST Record topics in numerical,
developmental, or chronological
order. Many times
PASSAGE
I. The idea which represents the author's main point is "peace and security are the
chief
Goals of all living beings", which is response (c). So (c) is the correct answer.
J. The best assumption underlying the passage is "The will to survive of a creature
is
Identified with a desire for peace", which is response (b). So (b) is the correct
answer.

Solution
Selling price = Ghc 2.00;
Profit = selling price ×cost price
= 5×8=0 Ghc 0.40
Cost price = selling price – profit
= Ghc 2.00 – Ghc 0.40 = Ghc 1.60
= profit percent = profit
Cost price × 100
= 0.4 / 1.60 ×100 =25%
2. The table below gives the production of timber in five districts of Ghana in a certain
year.
District Production
Bibiani 600
Nkawkaw 900
Wiaso 1800
Ahafo 1500
Agona 2400
Solution
Total production = 600 + 900 + 1800 + 1500 + 2400 = 7200
Angle of a circle = 360
To get the angles for each of them, work below

3. The pie chart below shows the value of goods in an electronic shop. The value of radio
cassette player is Ghc 90.00. Use this information to answer the following questions.
i. What is the total value of goods in the shop?
ii. What is the angle of sector that represent television sets
72
140
120
20
8
Solution
The angle representing radio cassette players is 72 and this is equivalent to Ghc 90.00.
The total value of goods in the shop is = to 360 that is the total circle.
If 72 = Ghc 90.00, then 360 = 360/72 × 90 = Ghc 450.00.
iii. The angle of sector that represent television sets = 360 – (20 + 72 + 120 +8) =
140.
There are at times candidates must use a tally table. The tally is used for raw da

Q. find the area of a triangle whose base is 4cm and height 5cm.
With the above question you need to quote the formula for the area of a triangle. That is ½
×base × height = ½ × b × h
Q. Efua can type 200 words in 8 minutes. How long does she take to type 800 words?
Solution
If 200 words is = to 8 minutes, then 800 words = 800/200 × 8 minutes. = 32 minutes.
Therefore it will take 32 minutes long to type 800 words.
Note: the above question is from ratio and proportion.
Trial: Ben’s computer can print 1800 words in 5 minutes. Working at the same rate, how
many words can it print in 7 minutes?
Solution
If 5 minutes = 1800 words
Then, 7 minutes = 7/5 × 1800
= 2520 words. Therefore he type 2520 words in 7 minutes.

Q. six added to twice a number is less than seventy – two. Find the number.
Solution
Let the unknown number be x.
Twice a number means 2 times the number. i.e. 2x.
Six added means 6 +.
Less than seventy two means – 72.
In all, the solution is
2x + 6 – 72 =2x = - 66
= x = -33.
Solution
The length of each equal part
=7/8 ÷ 8 =7/8 × 1/8 =7/64
i. One division is 7/64. Therefore, the difference between 1/8 and 7/64 is = 1/8 7/64 =
8 -7 /64 =1/64.
