CHAPTER NO 1.

A Study on critically examine CSR initative adopted by Rails India in Rural Maharashtra

1.1 Introduction :

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is also often referred to as business responsibility and an
organization’s action on environmental, ethical, social and economic issues. The terms in the
area can seem confusing if you don’t know the jargon – but don’t be put off by this. You need to
think of CSR simply as ensuring that your business is aware of its impacts, is accountable for its
actions, and that it undertakes these actions in a responsible manner. Furthermore, a well- run
business is transparent in its decision making and processes and this makes for good governance.

CSR can be described as an approach by which a company does the following:

 Recognizes that its activities have a wider impact on the society in which it operates, and
that developments in society in turn impact on its ability to pursue its business
sustainably.
 Actively manages the economic, social, environmental and human rights impact of its
activities both locally and across the world, basing these on principles which reflect both
international values and the organizations own values (ethics), reaping benefits for both
its own operations and reputation as well as the communities in which it operates.
 Seek to achieve these benefits by working closely with other groups and organizations
local communities, civil society groups, other businesses and home and host
governments.

1.2 Objectives of study :

o To study and analyze the CSR practices adopted by the corporate world, specifically by
Indian corporate houses.
o To analyzed the impacts of CSR practices on Corporate Brand Building.
o To carryout the comparative study of the Brand building through CSR practices.
o To study and compare the brand building aspect of business organization embracing CSR
with organizations not practicing the CSR.
o To study and compare different CSR concerns responsible for the Brand building.
o To compare various CSR concerns among the customers perception to wards brand
building.
1.3 Review of literature :

1.3.1: Harish Kumar (2012) : In is research article entitled “CSR Revisited” has throw
lights on tour different approaches of companies towards CSR viz; Good Governance, Ruinous
CSR, Discretionary CSR, and Illusion CSR. He also tried to highlight argument against the CSR
as well as the CSR driver. The research also found eight factors that drive the CSR initiatives.
They are philanthropic Attitude, Governmental Action, Environmental concerns, Ethical
consumerism, Crises and Calami-ties, Globalization and Market force, Social Awareness and
Education, and Social Expectation.

1.3.2: Dr. M. Ramana Kumar (2013) : In his study on CSR (Analysis of select Indian Private
and Public sector companies). Tried to analyses the CSR activities carried out by Indian Private (
Reliance Industries Ltd) and public sector companies (ONGC) and also study the Indian
government polices and programmes of CSR. The study revealed that through the Indian public
and private firms are making efforts in the CSR areas, still there is a requirement of more
emphasis on CSR. The study found that there is a significant difference in the CSR practices of
RIL and ONGC as the CSR budget of ONGC is more than RIL during the year 2009-10, 2010-11
and 2011-12 and average CSR score of ONGC is more than that of RIL during 2009 to 2013.

1.3.3: Monika Hartman (2011) : in her article “CSR in the food sector” analyzed the
importance of CSR in food sector particularly those companies which have high brands. The
study found that SMEs are less capable of discharging their obligation towards society. Further
the study revealed that food sector always tries to improve the controlling and discharging its
service towards consumers. It was also found that consumers show preference for those brand or
food sector that given importance to CSR activities.

1.4 Research methodology :

 Research design : The entire research is descriptive v/s exploratory in nature.

Descriptive as it describes the status of affairs of CSR in sample entities and explores
the facts of CSR. A study on perception of the policy maker and implementers which
includes CSR Heads and CSR executives, project head, implementers the sample
entities has been done to explore the CSR practices, CSR implementation and social
disclosure practices among the companies. The study is comparatives since it would
aim at studying and understanding the types of CSR policies, practices and
programmes , implementations models/ strategies/ approaches adopted by the
corporate, major issues and challenges associated with the implementations,
transparency and disclosure practices and methods of evaluation etc. which would be
identified and studies with a comparatives view of both the private and public sector
companies. It will also find out extent of similarities and diversification in such
practices of CSR among the sample entities.
 Research settings : the study has been carried out in different public and private
sector corporate entities of Baroda District.

1.5 Scope of study :

In the elongated history of social work, the profession has expanded its focus to include a variety
of new and exciting areas of practices. One such areas which has received attention as a
significant part of social work practice is service to business and industry. Similarly the business
community, in its effort to improve to overall functioning of personal, is increasingly examining
and using some of the services that the filed of social work has to offers.

The transformation from industrial social work to corporate social responsibility points out a
definite a shift in the realm of social work vis-à-vis goal, objective and priorities of business.
Over the past several decades social workers around the world have successfully been able to
integrate with the modern production and business processes, particularly in addressing the
emergent needs of the industrial population like those arising out of the psychosocial impact of
workforce alienation, over- specialization, competitiveness and stress and fatigue on their life.
But this new configuration leads itself to the process of self- examination and the litmus test
remains: is corporate social responsibility a new areas structured to delineate the corporates ideas
of greater variety of social services for human kind; or just one more catchphrase used to
establish the fact that business houses are doing “a lot more” then mere expansion of social
work; or has there been a change in the principal objectives, priorities of the corporate at the
back of starting theseprogrammes from curbing loss to “just making profit”?.
Most of the CSR initiatives undertaken by the companies are in areas traditionally supported by
social work, including public safety, community development, education, public health and
diversity. Over years gradually many corporations have learned to tap into the expertise of social
workers by creating rules for them within the corporate hierarchy. Social work plants the seeds
for corporate good and described the varied rules that social worker fill that corporation.

1.6 Limitations of study :

 The respondent were not very open to reveal the true pictures of the organization and
many present themselves in a public relation manner.
 The researcher experience difficulty in collecting data related to the actual spending in
CSR activities as the authorities were reluctant to disclose the financial details.
 Period was too long. Must of the times several months passed to approach a signal
policymaker and implementer. The appointment were cancelled many times. However
the researcher took the help of research guides in fixing an appointment with the
concerned authorities which helps during collection of data.

 Affirmative Action Program in Rallis

In line with Tata Group, Rallis has developed its AA Policy. We have followed a unique process
for setting up strategy for Affirmative action. All Sr. management people chalked out the key
challenges in driving AA program in their respective areas of business and possible line of action
separately. These inputs were then collated and thoroughly discussed in Steering committee
meeting to categorize common key challenges and formulate strategy to take off Affirmative
action program at Rallis. While finalising the strategy we have considered key challenges of our
business, defined purpose of AA, need assessment of the community and inputs from experts in
this field. All these were kept in mind while preparing AA strategy for Rallis. Using above inputs
we decided to take up Employability embedded with Education as our focus area for Rallis out of
the four Es - Employment, Employability, Entrepreneurship and Education. Company has
chalked out two programmes namely TRAITs (Employability) and RUBY (Education) to have
visible impact on society. Therefore Rallis purpose and focus of AA is very clear: We need pool
of manpower from rural background for Agri- interventions. Skill set for such work is unique &
is developed through special training. Through this intervention nurturing and equipping youths
thus creating opportunity for them in Rallis and elsewhere as this kind of skill set is in demand
across various organizations. Through RUBY (Rallis Ujjwal Bhavishya Yojana) intervention
focus is on improving quality of education and skill building by imparting training, exposures
and informal education to students with a view to enhance employability in long term. Besides
our focus area we have also contributed in other 2Es (Employment & Entrepreneurship) as
appropriate.

Besides the 4 Es we have also been able to serve the AA communities through various CSR
interventions.

Key initiatives in Affirmative Action:

Employability through Skill Development:

As a part of grooming SC/ST youths for the required skill set for Agro Chemical/ chemical
industry, we have been imparting skill training to SC/ST youths through TRAITS (Tata Rallis
Agri Input Training Scheme) & FTT (Fix Term Trainee).

TRAITS (Tata Rallis Agri Input Training Scheme)

Under this initiative minimum SSC pass and non-graduate rural youths from farming background
are being trained by imparting training in Agri-marketing and crop advising field to enable them
to take up a career in Agri marketing and crop advising.

One year training is given ‘in-house as well as on the job’ in collaboration with Government run
Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). Stipend is paid to the trainees so that they focus on training
(earn-while-learn). Successful trainees would be given certificates jointly certified by Rallis and
Government run KVKs.

After successful completion of one year training, these youths shall be given employment
support for minimum two years. Thus it will not only make the unemployed rural youths
employable, but will also produce loyal frontline sale-force for Rallis India at a lesser price
point.

FTT (Fixed Term Trainee):

To tide over shortage of skilled manpower at beginner level, Fixed Term Trainee i.e. FTT
concept was evolved for manufacturing. Qualification was agreed as preferably fresh graduates
(B Sc / M Sc / Dip) from local Campus or in few cases candidates with less experience will be
taken as FTTs. The training is well structured and includes Class-room training, Safety, SAP &
Computer training.

The duration for FTT is fixed for two years with assumption that by the end of two years
certainty a continual requirement will emerge in term of agreed organization chart. After initial
experience it was decided that for every requirement of 6 number of Supervisors 10 number of
FTTs will be allowed to be taken. At the end of two years period, a joint assessment is being
conducted by a panel comprising of Unit / HO HR / Unit HR and if there is a vacancy, the FTTs
are being absorbed as Supervisor. FTTs are given certificate on the completion of training. The
trained FTTs are having ample opportunity for employment inside as well as outside the
organization.

FTT has been able to generate employment for 2 SC/ST in this financial year.

Besides TRAITS & FTT, Rallis focuses on imparting skill training to students and women group
through Community development initiatives. At Lote, Shenva & Kolkhe total 99 women & girls
were imparted with Skill training related to fine art like Diya painting, murals, trays etc for home
based business. Out of them 85 women/girls (40 women & 45 students) belongs to SC/ST
community. 10 women out of this 40 were able to earn money by sale of these products during
Diwali celebration.

Education:

Under Community Development initiatives various educational activities have been taken across
locations as per the need of the area. The approach followed is to focus on creating awareness
about the importance of education, improving quality of education through training, focus on
holistic development of students and providing Educational Aids to the deprived students. Rallis
focuses to implement its educational interventions in SC/STs populated areas.

These interventions are implemented by Rallis CSR team along with Rallis volunteers. Rallis
also invites experts from the field to interact with the students like Career counsellors, Role
models, experts to share their experiences with the students. These initiatives help to build the
confidence level as well as acts as inspiration in the life of students.

Rallis educational interventions have been getting positive feedback from school authorities. The
intervention includes activities like Career guidance for 10th and 12th students, Kitchen garden
activities, Science interventions, First aid training, Role Model lectures, Self defence training to
girl students, skill training, Awareness on Importance of educating girl child – Spoorthi program,
Awareness programs related to safe water, home and road safety.

This year Rallis has initiated sponsoring meritorious students from its basic computer program
for MS-CIT course. MS-CIT course is run by Govt of Maharashtra and certificate holders from
this course get employed in IT field. This year so far 30 such students have been supported under
for MS-CIT course and before March 2015 more 20 Students will be sponsored for the said
course.

Besides implementing the above interventions, Rallis also supports needy students by providing
educational Aids like notebooks, uniforms, etc.

Project: Project Jal Dhan and Jal Mitra  (2016-17) Project Budget: INR 1.91 Cr

Project Sector  : Environmental Sustainability

Implementing Partners:  Direct Implementation

 Project Description:

Company’s water management “Jal Dhan” and “Jal Mitra” project started from Lote (Chiplun),
Maharashtra in 2013-14. The project was aimed at increasing water availability for Agriculture
of small and marginal farmers through watershed interventions. In the said rain water harvesting
project they focused on constructing various temporary and permanent structures like loose
boulder, Diversion dam, Check dam etc. These structures were initially created with the help of
Rallis employee volunteers and villagers from selected villages through shram daan i.e.
providing ones’ service for community work. Looking at the response and impact in the first
year, they intensified the watershed project in 2014-15 and increased the number of check dams,
loose boulders, trenches, Vanarai bandhara, desilting of existing structures etc. By these
interventions company harvested 140 million litres of water.
As a part of integrated approach Company focused on enhancing livelihood of small and
marginal farmers by providing them knowledge of modern and improved techniques of farming.
As Paddy is the major crop in this region, Rallis introduced SRI technique under “Jal Mitra” (S R
I – System of Rice Intensification - Improved method) for Paddy cultivation. This has resulted in
improving crop yields by 25% while reducing labor cost by 50% with lower seed cost and
reduced water requirement compared to normal method.
Company has now expanded its Jal Dhan programme to 20 villages of Ratnagiri, Vidarbha,
Marathwada and Raigadh regions covering 64,978 villagers including 22,639 Affi rmative
Action (AA) population. With the good rainfall during 2016 South West monsoon, 493.23
million litres of water was harvested through Rallis Jal Dhan intervention.
Project Location:   Maharashtra, Palghar-Maharashtra, Akola-Maharashtra, Thane-Maharashtra,
Beed-Maharashtra,
Rallis India has four manufacturing locations. Two each in Maharashtra and Gujarat. One of its
unit is at Lote, located in the Kokan belt of Maharashtra. Since its early days, starting 1998,
Rallis has been involved in various Community development initiatives . These initiatives were
primarily on Education support and skill development.

Since Kokan region is blessed with heavy rainfall every monsoon, yet faces water scarcity during
summers due to its hilly terrain and lack of proper storage structure for rainwater. Land available
for cultivation is also in small patches and thereby majorly of Paddy cultivation is done in
traditional way.

Nearly three year back we have decided to intensify our intervention in this region and in
consideration to geographical conditions as stated above Rallis has identified villages in the
vicinity of its 5 km radius for Integrated Watershed project.

Project aimed at increasing livelihood by increasing Agri productivity of Small & Marginal
farmers through watershed interventions, women empowerment, skill development.

In the watershed project for harvesting Rain water, we have focused on constructing various
temporary and permanent structures like loose boulder, Diversion dam, Check dam etc and
Afforestation.
These structures were created with the help of Rallis Employee volunteers’ i.e Saathis and
Villagers through ‘Shram daan’ i.e. providing ones service for community work. We have
promoted participatory approach for this project for its sustainability. We have also coordinated
with Agriculture department who came forward and constructed Check Dam and staggered
trenches. This has helped in enhancing availability of water to villagers for irrigation and
supported their livelihood.

We had dual purpose in mind for our Afforestation initiative which helped in increasing ground
water level and also soil conservation. As the area selected by us has sacred forest, we have also
focused on Bio Diversity, thus planted more than thousand trees having variety of mix species
and fruit trees.

As a part of integrated approach we focused on enhancing livelihood of Small & Marginal

farmers, women and youths. Various Capacity building program for all three have been
organized.

For farmers: Modern and improved techniques of farming including various government
schemes were shared by experts. Site visits, awareness sessions and actual demonstration on the
field were organized by Rallis. As Paddy is the major crop in this region, Rallis introduced SRI
technique (S R I – System of Rice Intensification -Imporve method ) for Paddy cultivation. We
worked with two farmers who agreed to offer their land for Pilot project. After implementation
of SRI technique, 25% Crop production was increased with 50% reduction in labour cost & seed
cost as compare to normal method. Farmers are very happy with the result and this year 15 new
farmers along with the 2 previous farmers have adopted SRI technique for rice cultivation. In
addition to this Farmers were also encouraged to opt for 2nd crop of vegetable and pulses, last
year two farmers came forward and got good result and this has increased in their household
income. This year same is being adopted by other farmers also.

Women Empowerment: For empowering women covered under the Project area, Self Help
groups (SHGs) were created involving 60 women. SHG members have under gone number of
awareness sessions and Skill trainings. They were taken for site visits and experts were invited to
interact with them and share about marketing strategy which encourages and motivates them to
start their Home Based Businesses. Rallis created marketing opportunity for SHG members by
organizing exhibition in MIDC area where members from SHG groups sold their produced and
earned handsome amount. Our Lote unit has also started taking Papad from these SHGs.

For Youths & Women: Kokan area is blessed with Natural beauty and is comparatively close to
Cities like Mumbai. Taking advantage of this, Responsible tourism has been introduced in the
villages, where tourist from urban area comes for weekend tourism in the village and enjoys
village life. They stay in the homes of villagers, consume local food, and helps villagers in their
day to day activities. Youths from village are trained as tourist guide, who helps them understand
the culture, history and accompanies them in various activities. Thus this initiative has created
livelihood option for youths, villagers and SHG members.

Total cost is Rs. 20 Lacs for 4 years. On an average 4 to 5 lac per year

Return on investment (ROI)?

1. Increase in water table

2. Potable water access increased

3. Increased seasonal vegetable crop cultivation ( rabbi crop )

4. Agriculture production increased.

5. Income generation for women

6. Soil conservation in the village

7. Water level in wells will increased by end of project period

8. Linkage with Govt. dept. established

9. Income generation from Village tourism

IMPACT

Water has become a global issue and it is having immense importance to society as well as to
business. Rallis wanted to work in this area as a part of our connect to rural India and that is why
we have selected Water as one of our focus area. This is also one of the priority in terms of
Company, Tata Group, Local and National requirements.

Villages are located in 5 km radius of Rallis unit. It covers 6 small villages catering to total 1500
population.
Regular feedbacks from Grampanchayat, Farmers and SHG members are taken. Water levels are
taken at regular intervals using piezometers to check the increase in water table and thereby rain
water harvested.

Project is sustainable and is replicable. We started with one village two years back and from this
year onwards, 5 new villages have been added and various interventions are being replicated.

Challenges & Action

1. Main challenge was convincing villagers to implement said project, as villagers only
wanted donations and other monetary incentives.

2. People belong to various political parties’ hence political interventions.

3. Motivating women to come out of their daily household chores` and initiate the Home
based businesses.

4. There are some challenges which still needs to overcome like Monkey-menace.

5. Need assessment was done and based on that various interventions were planned and
implemented on participatory approach. Villagers were got convinced to maintain the
projects that we have initiated suiting to their requirements through one to one discussion,
village meetings, and convincing opinion leaders and their buy-in for various projects.

6. Villagers were convinced through counseling, discussion and village meetings that to
initiate the work and support it all should come together as one group, leaving their
political connections aside.

7. Experts and motivational leaders were invited, exposure/site visits to existing business
women and their units were organized to inspire and motivate women.

8. Still we have not overcome all the challenges, but we are trying to come out of the
challenges going forward.

ISO-50001 etc. In the current year, Company has successfully completed its big bet to become
water neutral by further reducing the water footprint and expanding rain water harvesting in
villages, extensive use of Solar lights, installing integrated project (Solar + Wind) in one of the
village near Navi Mumbai, one more green building work in progress at Ankleshwar unit, few
more water based formulations, planting 13000 saplings etc.

Successful completion of Solar Project “Sunshine”: A milestone in our Journey to Sustainable
Energy.
This initiative is part of our Long term Sustainability plan of “50 % Power generation using
renewable source of energy”.  In this direction Rallis has begun to invest in usage of renewable
energy as a suppliant to conventional energy being consumed across the factories. We have set
up a 4.4 MWp Solar Power Plant at Dahej that established connectivity with national grid on
24th December 2015 at the hands of then Chairman Mr. R. Gopalakrishnan in the presence of
Mr. Anil Sardana, Chairman of Tata Power Solar Systems Ltd. (TPSS), Mr. V. Shankar, CEO &
Managing Director and Mr. Ashish Khanna, CEO of TPSS. The project was completed in 70
working days with TPSS as the EPC contractor for the generation side & M/s. Shrinathji
Electricals for switch yard, substation and evacuation line under advice by Tata Power Ltd.

Entire power generated from this project, “Sunshine”, will be for captive consumption at
Ankleshwar and Dahej units. Hence, the power evacuation will be at 11/66KV and wheeled to
the respective DISCOMS through Long Term Open Access agreement with Gujarat Energy
Transmission Corporation Limited. Based on the climatic stimulation data, “Sunshine” is
expected to generate around 7.5 million Units per annum.

Even though economic benefits may not commensurate to the spending, commitment of Rallis to
sustainability factors is paramount in this endeavor. It is also a humble contribution to the
commitment of government of India to generate 100 GW of solar power out of the total of
175GW of renewable energy by 2020.

infrastructure, and are unable to acquire new skills and improve their overall personality. While
implementing these programmes, they realized that students face challenges and frequently find
it difficult to cope with two subjects - Science and English. Rallis focuses on neglected domains
like Science, English and E-learning, which has improved the performance of students in exams.
RUBY focuses on qualitative outcomes. For example, Mr. Sharad Pandhare, Teacher from
AshramSchool, Shenva says: “E-Learning facility at school resulted in substantial increase in
student participation in the classroom and resulted in better performance in the exams”. The

CHAPTER 5.

SUGGESTION AND CONCLUSION

5.1 Suggestions

The present chapter presents suggestions to the various services and business enterprises both
governmental and non-governmental organizations to promote better relationships between these
services/ enterprises and society in general and the various stakeholders in particular. Corporate
Social Responsibility can be classified as those policies, activities, or behaviour undertaken by
an organization that goes beyond the traditional economic and legal obligations that the firm has
with its target internal and external stakeholders. Corporate social responsibility is more than a
business policy or a response to issues raised by society. It is a governing business philosophy.
Responding to the ethical obligations must be voluntary in nature and if undertaken effectively
should eventually benefit and improve the overall welfare of the community in which the firm
operates. The following are the suggestions:

5.1.1. Identification of reasons and benefits of practicing Corporate Social Responsibility in

different sectors of business can have a scope for further research along with development of
company ethics programme, integration of business ethics and ethics training to the staff.

5.1.2. A study involving other independent variables such as Corporate Reputation,

Organizational Climate, and Sustainability can be undertaken to find out its effect on Corporate
Social Responsibilit

5.1.3. Further study may focus on identifying and comparing the perception of line managers,
staff managers, and employees on Corporate Social Responsibility practices of the company.

5.1.4. Future study can look into Corporate Social Responsibility practices and Business
performance of product oriented or services oriented companies in Manipur.

5.1.5. Identification of programs and policies to enhance Corporate Social Responsibility

practices is also a relevant area of research.

5.1.6. Companies and organisations should integrate social entrepreneurship into their core
culture by actively channelizing their research and development capabilities in the direction of
socially innovative products and services.
5.2 Conclusion

Until late in India, the mission of business firms was exclusively economic. But, with the
business environment being characterized by various developments including the shift of power
from capital to knowledge, increased levels of literacy, and, the shrinking of geographical
boundaries due to faster means of travel and communication, people are, by and large, becoming
conscious of their rights, which has led to a rise in the expectations of the common man from
business in Manipur also.

An organization receives inputs from society in the form of skilled / unskilled labour, raw
material and natural resources like air, water and space for its operation and, in turn, offers goods
and services to society. Thus, businesses depend on society for further existence and it is, in their
interest to take care of society. It cannot operate either in isolation or in vacuum. Like
individuals, businesses also need to live in the real world, i.e., in society. Therefore, to be
successful in business, companies also need to look after the basic needs of the society, minimise
harmful effects to environment, contribute in nation-building and comply with the law of the
land.

The study and overall analysis reveals that concept of corporate social responsibility is gaining
prominence from all avenues in Manipur. Contrary to the general awareness of the term, many of
the managers and executives of services/enterprises in Manipur are not fully aware of CSR. Not
only the less educated and less informed managers of micro industries, as well as many of the
executives of high profile enterprises are not fully aware of CSR practice. Organizations must
realize that government alone will not be able to get success in its endeavour to uplift the
downtrodden of society. Many of the leading corporations across the world had realized the
importance of being associated with socially relevant causes as a means of promoting their
brands. It stems from the desire to do well and get self-satisfaction in return as well as societal
obligation of business. Corporate Social Responsibility practice can have a financial impact on
the service/enterprise and it is necessary for the managers/executives to understand the
implications of CSR. It would be better to educate the managers/executives about the
implications, in turn; they can give the awareness to its staff and employees. In the era of
information, everyone knows who is doing what, and what implication it is giving to the society
due to the operation of a certain business. Likewise, all will support enterprises who are
contributing towards

the betterment of the society and its interest will be served whereas those enterprises will be
isolated in the long run that is harming the interest of the society.

In addition to people-focused activities, current CSR activities in India, particularly in Manipur

also tend to focus on improving society and protecting the environment. Society-related CSR
activities largely focus on giving back to others in some way, such as helping the underprivileged
by providing them food, water, shelter and medical care. An organization has a responsibility
towards the society and towards its people. They should work towards uplifting the people in
society by giving them basic amenities. Environmental-related CSR activities include treating
factory waste properly to avoid harming the natural environment. It is also found that the
environment impacts a large number of people, therefore CSR activities should focus on
environmental welfare. In India, treating factory waste is a major problem. Unlike developed
countries, India’s legal system does not monitor whether or not factories are treating their waste
properly. Therefore, even those activities which are required by governments in developed
countries are considered a form of social responsibility in a developing country like India.

CSR activities are primarily inspired by Gandhi’s concept of social trusteeship and thus focus on
the well-being of employees and the common man. This focus is likely also due to the nature of
the industry and the fact that India is a developing nation. Manufacturers who can focus on social
responsibility do so to take care of employees. Moreover, India is still struggling to provide basic
amenities to all of its people. Also, Indian factories particularly in Manipur lack the resources
needed just to treat their employees well; then carrying out CSR along is a difficult task for them.

Indeed, it is evident from the study that western concepts of CSR do not necessarily translate to a
developing country like India, which is currently struggling simply to meet economic, legal and
ethical responsibilities. Thus, it is not surprising

that in India, CSR equates to the basic needs of taking care of people, society and the
environment, rather than philanthropic responsibilities. Perhaps, when India becomes a fully
developed nation, companies may have the luxury of engaging in the philanthropic
responsibilities.

As mentioned in Chapter I, many authors have defined CSR, but there is little agreement as to
exactly what CSR is. Moreover, most of the CSR definitions in literature are based on practices
of companies in developed countries. To date, there is no definition of CSR as it is practiced by
firms in developing countries. This study, addressed this gap, in the literature by seeking to
understand what CSR means in the context of a developing country. Based on the findings of this
study, in the context of Manipur, Corporate Social Responsibility can be defined as a firm’s
commitment to adopt policies and conduct activities that have a positive impact on employee
welfare, society, and the environment. Moreover, CSR must not be engaged in solely for profits.
However, in order for firms in the state to accept the idea of CSR, it should be economically
sustainable and result is either direct or indirect financial gains. Thus, from the above analysis
and from the respective tables in the chapters, reflect and, leads explorations to the exact end
