Physical Education Teaching Philosophy

Learning is achieved in a variety of ways and is unique to everyone. My goal as a teacher

is to provide endless techniques and strategies to my students, which will enable them to learn to

their fullest potential. My students will finish my physical education class with useful knowledge

that will further them in the future. With that being said, it is crucial that they can apply different

activities that they learned to maintain lifelong fitness and health. Our curriculum will be

designed to follow the New York State Standards and Outcomes as well as Society of Health and

Physical Educators, SHAPE America and the grade level outcomes.

Due to the fact that all students learn in different ways and at different paces, this will

play a major role in the way I construct my class. I will observe each of my students to determine

how each of them learns best. After analyzing them, I will implement a variety of teaching styles

in my class. For visual learners, I will be sure to have station cards with pictures of the activity

they are expected to complete. For a kinesthetic learner, I will give them opportunities to keep

practicing the skill to get an understanding of it. I will also always be open to trying new

techniques and challenging myself as well as the children to learn efficiently.

The majority of the assessments for my students will be through my own observation and

checklists. For each individual unit, I will create a checklist that corresponds with the grade level

outcomes. Due to the fact that each grade has different expectations and status of learning, I will

have to create a different checklist for each grade that I teach. Ways that I will observe the

students is through refinement then application. First, I will remind my students throughout the
unit specific cues to be successful in the skill or activity. Once they have an understanding, I will

assess by having them apply the skills in situations.

In order to have the most enabling learning environment, it is crucial for it to be safe and

healthy. SHAPE America Standard 2; a safe and healthy environment discusses how students

will gain knowledge within the class that is needed to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

With this being said, I will teach the students what that means and how to create it. I will always

be positive and motivate my students as much as possible. I will encourage them to express their

feelings and remind them that being active helps relieve stress. My students will respect each

other and the facility they learn in as well as the equipment they have been provided to use. My

classroom expectations will also be accessible in the gymnasium so they can be reviewed at any

time throughout the school year.
