Project Description
The renovation being proposed is to create library in an existing warehouse building. The
existing building is 76 feet by 124 feet and 20 feet tall. There are no existing walls inside the
building, only columns that are for structural support.
The constraints of what each floor plan must include are designated below.
● First Floor plan must include areas designated for:
○ Entry and Circulation Desk area
○ Children’s Help Desk
○ Open area for stacks (shelves of books and media) and computer terminals
○ Public restroom
○ Head Librarian’s office
○ Staff workroom/ kitchenette
○ Staff restroom
○ Two meeting rooms
○ Noblesville History room
○ Mechanical room
● Second Floor plan must include:
○ Open floor area for stacks
○ Public restroom
Other design elements that need to be present in the final proposal should be:
● The design should follow all applicable building codes and local regulations.
● The existing structure will be fully utilized when possible.
● A new modern entryway and vestibule will be added to improve the aesthetics of the
building, provide full accessibility, and include an exterior covered area with benches.
● A partial second floor will be added and an elevator provided for accessibility.

Use and Occupancy classification for the proposed new Keystone Building:
The use and occupancy classification of this size library is covered under IBC 303.4. It is listed
as an Assembly A-3 category.
Allowable Building Heights for the Keystone Library using different construction types:
The projected renovation would fall underneath a III-B category. The B indicates that the
structural members are not protected by an additional fire-rated coating or cover. This also
means that the outside walls should be made of brick as they already are and the inside
supports, the studs, should be metal and non-combustible.
Materials proposed to use for the new interior walls and floor for the Keystone Building:
Interior Walls: Gypsum wall board mounted on metal studs
Floor: Some kind of tile or hardwood flooring.
Occupant Load:
Based on the IBC section 1004 the total occupancy rating is 312 people, broken down as
follows:
1st Floor: 180 occupants
2nd Floor: 45 occupants
Green Roof: 87 occupants
Zoning designation:
The Keystone Building will be entirely within the PB or planned business zone designation by
Noblesville.
Description:
The purpose of a planned business zone is to encourage well planned business uses,
particularly with respect to unified design, safe ingress/egress, adequate and properly room for
parking and service facilities. It also helps to guarantee safe and convenient pedestrian
accessibility.
Utilities
Power
Easements can be negotiated for private and municipal utilities. When lots are “adjoining,”
requirements for service connections can be waived in order to maintain single ownership.
Water Supply
Must hook into the municipal system with brass fittings prescribed by the pressure that is
exerted at the library and the number of fittings within the library.
5
Waste Water.
Connection to Public Sewer System is mandatory. If a public sanitary sewer is accessible and
a sanitary sewer is laced in a street or alley neighboring upon property, the owner of the
property must be required to connect to the sewer for the purpose of disposing of waste, and it
is unlawful for any owner or occupant to maintain upon any property an individual sewage
disposal system.
Gas
Must connect underground, any connection above ground must be removed and connected
underground. The connection is not required to be to city supply, it can be from private system.

Engineering Calculations
Roof Beams
The roof is low-slope and constructed of a steel roof deck, five inches of rigid insulation, and a
built-up roof.
The roof deck will have a double span
The roof will also provide support for 10 psf of MSP equipment
Live Load
Pf = .7 * CE * Ct * Is * pg
CE = 1 since it is an urban environment surrounded by other buildings.
Ct = 1 since the building is heated and loses some heat through the roof
Cs = 1 because it is a low-slope roof
Is = 1.1 because the library is in occupancy category III
pg = 25 due to the snow load given by the IBC Figure 1608.2
pf = 20*1.1
pf > 20 therefore we take that value
pf = 22
Dead Load
All this information comes from the weights of materials table
Built-up roof 6.5 psf
5in. Rigid insulation .75 per inch = 3.75 psf
Steel roof decking 3 psf
⅝” Suspended ceiling 1.4 psf
MEP 10 psf
Total Dead Load 24.65 psf
Rounded 25 psf
Interior Beams
Live Load = 150 lb/ft
Dead Load = 65
Total Load = 215
Loading = 215 * 10ft width = 2160 psf
Beam selection
Girder selection
The exterior beams and girders were calculated by an associate in the process.
The resulting beams and girders are
Exterior Beam - W 16-26
Exterior Girder - W 24-55
