Introduction
SharePoint Online delivers the powerful features of SharePoint without the associated
overhead of managing the infrastructure on your own. Flexible management options
ensure that you still retain the control you need to meet the compliance requirements
of your organization.
SharePoint Online is a cloud-based service that helps organizations share and
collaborate with colleagues, partners, and customers. With SharePoint Online, you can
access internal sites, documents, and other information from anywhere—at the office,
at home, or from a mobile device.
This document gives information about SharePoint Admin center.

Site Collections
A Microsoft SharePoint Online site collection is a tiered set of sites that you can
manage individually or as a group. The sites share administration settings, navigation,
permissions, and other features. Each site collection contains a single top-level site and
any number of subsites below it. A subsite can inherit permissions and navigation from
its parent site or these elements can be specified and managed separately.

Manage Permissions
If you work on a site, you are working inside a site collection. Every site exists in a site
collection, which is a group of sites that are in a hierarchy under a single top-level
site.
The top-level site is called the root site of the site collection.
14 | P a g e
1. At the top of the site collection, a site collection administrator
configures permissions for the whole collection.
2. By design, all the sites and site content in a collection inherit the
permissions settings of the top-level site (the root site of a site collection). If
you are a site owner, you can stop permission inheritance for the site, and
change the permission settings for the site.
3. Lists and libraries inherit permissions from the site to which they belong. If you
are a site owner, you can stop permissions inheritance for the list or library,
and change the permission settings of the list or library.
4. List items and library files inherit permissions from their parent list or library. If
you have control of a list or library, you can stop permissions inheritance for
the item and change the permissions settings directly on the specific item.
SharePoint groups
1. Helps you align your site structure and permissions with the requirements of the
organization
2. Streamlines site maintenance for site collection administrators and site owners
3. Ensures that people performing similar tasks have the same levels of access
4. Helps you make sure that people have only the access they need, not more.
