NURSING HOME

1. What’s nursing home?

A nursing home is a place for people who don't need to be in a hospital but can't be
cared for at home. Most nursing homes have nursing aides and skilled nurses on hand
24 hours a day.

Some nursing homes are set up like a hospital. The staff provides medical care, as
well as physical, speech and occupational therapy. There might be a nurses' station on
each floor. Other nursing homes try to be more like home. They try to have a
neighborhood feel. Often, they don't have a fixed day-to-day schedule, and kitchens
might be open to residents. Staff members are encouraged to develop relationships
with residents.

Some nursing homes have special care units for people with serious memory
problems such as Alzheimer's disease. Some will let couples live together. Nursing
homes are not only for the elderly, but for anyone who requires 24-hour care.

2. Why do they choose to stay there?

Every elderly person has different reasons about why in the end they live in a nursing
home. Based on the results of interviews with elderly informants who were in the
nursing home, there were several main reasons behind their reasons for living in
nursing homes, namely:

a. Don't want to bother your family.

The high level of family activity makes elderly family members feel
uncomfortable if they have to live with their children or family. These feelings
arise because their daily lives are more often spent alone so there are no friends to
talk to. "As perceived by grandparents". In addition, the elderly chose to live in a
nursing home because they did not want to cause a problem by living with their
daughter-in-law or nuclear family.

b. Family decision.
The reason for the elderly to live in a nursing home is also inseparable from the
influence of the family. Families consider that it is better for their parents to live
in a nursing home than to be at home, which sometimes puts a burden on them.
Taking these decisions will take place well if agreed upon by both parties, namely
the family and the elderly as parents. In the elderly who agreed to the decision to
stay in a nursing home, they would have a perception that living in a nursing home
was not a bad thing so it was considered to be one of the solutions to the problems
faced. Conversely, the elderly who live in nursing homes because of unilateral
decisions from the family, will think that the nursing home is a place of seclusion
for themselves that is no longer wanted by the family.
According to spradley factors that influence humans in making adaptations
include the perception and interpretation of an object that will lead to a
categorization system, the categorization system will be used to identify suitable
environmental aspects to be adapted so that they can anticipate future events.

c. Sick.
The existence of health services from doctors and nurses in nursing homes by the
elderly is considered a plus that they can get as long as they become residents.
Elderly residents of nursing homes expect mothers to feel, with professional
health services provided by doctors and nurses able to improve and maintain the
quality of their health. Indeed, living in a nursing home might be better than
staying with family. Nursing homes have the knowledge and experience of caring
for elderly people. Elderly people can also fulfill their social needs by socializing
with peers. In addition, facilities such as doctor visits will make it easier for the
elderly to check their health. Activities provided such as sports, embroidery,
farming enable the elderly to continue to be active and productive

d. Live alone.
In the nursing home there were also elderly people who entered as residents
because of recommendations from the area in his previous residence, this was
because he lived without his family. The concern shown by the residents around
the elderly residence was welcomed by the nursing home of Werdha Hargo, to
care for and direct the life of a prosperous old age. Elderly said that if he had been
here for a long time, he himself had come to be treated by a nursing home because
he did not have relatives.
Therefore the elderly prefer to live in a nursing home, rather than being outside
but not clear.

3. Your point of view to culture and religion?

a. Culture
In the Minangkabau tribe, parents in a broad matrilineal family were seen as
worthy of respect. The male parent obtained an honorary degree and became the
leader of his extended family or village. Old men (mamak) provide advice on all
problems, especially indigenous issues (Navis 1984). As stated in the phrase why
pie tampek batanyo, how come I go home tampek babarito (if I go where I ask, if I
go home complain).

Position and Role of elderly people in family and society are considered as people
who must be respected and valued, especially considered to have high prestige in
the community making the elderly psychologically healthier mentally. Feelings of
being accepted by others will influence their responses in entering old age, and
also affect the health status of the elderly. Unlike the case if the elderly are
considered unwanted roles in society.

Research on the elderly in Minangkabau, shows that in the ideal order of

Minangkabau matrilineal society, the relationship of family structures, ties to
social solidarity, and the tradition of migrating are all functional as social security
for the elderly so that the elderly cannot live wasted in their old days, so it can be
a shame of shame for children, nephews, family, relatives or even people in the
village. However, in the changing conditions in contemporary Minangkabau
society, including the change in the extended family structure to the nuclear
family, the pattern of neural settlements, brought consequences to changes in the
functioning of family structures and social relations in the Minangkabau
community. Changes in the functioning of the family structure have implications
for the lives of older people. Elderly people without children get their own
problems within the Minangkabau community, seemingly more dominant social
problems than the problem of declining physical conditions due to aging.

b. Religion

According to Islam, leaving parents to nursing homes is not permitted. Because

we try to think our parents have been taking good care of us with love, while we
reciprocate it is not good. Whatever they are willing to do to fulfill our needs. Do
we want to be called an ungodly child who does not want to care for our father
and mother with affection.
Mothers who contain us for 9 months fight pain and fight themselves for giving
birth to us. Mother bet lives for us and while we as children can do that to our
mothers.
Then father, he slams the bones for the family stock for his child. He is willing to
be hot, the rain rains and his purpose is only one, namely for the child and the
success of the child in the future.
Parents really want to do the best for us, don't we want to do the same?
There are also those who say the law of entrusting parents is permissible, because
the child is not sufficient to care for his parents, but must provide the best quality
for our parents. Is it true that we don't want to repay the kindness and affection of
our parents so far? Even though they do not expect retaliation, we should
understand our needs and capacities as children. Even when our parents are hard
they keep trying for the best for us. Therefore we should understand very well
what our role as children and rethink what has been given by the parents will
never be avenged, even though we have given abundant wealth.
