CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Backround of the Study

Language is a mean of communication that used by human to communicate.

Language always develops from time to time because of the social conditions and

the human need. Chaika (1994:8) states that language cannot be fixed at any point.

It develops based on the needs, wish, and want of the speakers. Every normal

speaker has abilities to make up new words, use old words in a new way, compose

sentences they have never heard before, and combine sentences into wholly new

discourses. Nowadays, the human not only used the formal language to speak but

people use slang language where slang is variety language that is used by

community, group and individu.

According to Pel and Gaynor in Ari Hanggoro (2011) slang is a style of

language faintly common use, produced by popular adaptation and extension of

the meaning of existing words and by coining new words with disregard

scholastic standard and linguistic principles of the formation the words: generally

peculiar to certain classes and social or age group. Slang is confidential informal

English spoken which created and used by a particular community. Yule, George

(2006:211) described, Slang or „colloquial speech‟ are words or phrases that are

used instead of more everyday terms among younger speakers and other groups

with special interests. Slang mostly used by younger speakers, although there are

older speakers use it for their communication. Younger speakers give effect

toward the forming of slang.

1
Slang is informal language that used in the informal situation and place, It

can be in store, mall, cafe, school, church and anywhere people stay. Nowdays,

people know that each language has many slang, especialy in english such as

gimme, gotcha, kiddo, BOHICA, and so on. There are many new slang words that

created by american people. they usualy using movie or song to introduce their

new slang words to the world, Like slang “shawty is a eenie meenie miney mo

lova” in Sean Kingston’s songs, or “chokehold, kalhua, volkswagen” in

Eminem’s song. But sometimes the slang of some songs has dirty meaning and

there are few slang in song because it has short duration. By some people there,

movie is the best media to introduced their slang to the world, because it has long

duration, and they can put many slang in it. so the writer interested to find the

slang words in a movie,. In here, the writer tries to find the slang words in an

American movie. There are many movie that used slang words, but the writer

wants to find the slang words just on an american movie because there are a lot of

new slang word that made by American people. the title of the movie is Jumanji 2.

Actually, there are similar movie named JUMANJI 1 but it was made in 2000 so

there are many old slang words on the movie. JUMANJI 2 has some new slang

words because it made on december 20th 2017. This movie based on the book by

Chris Van Allsbrug, directed by Jake Kasdan and staring by some hollywood

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1. Literature Review

Literature review is a part of research which reveals a comprehensive

guideline of concepts, principles or theories used as the basic to answers the

research question. It has function to support research problem scientifically, to

give temporary answer to lead hypothesis and help design methodology (Ngongo,

2004). In this part, the writer will review some studies were conducting before

which is related to the title of this research.

Prihandoko (2012) conducted a study on slang words used by the characters

in Ramona and Beezus Movie. The research is conducted to investigate, the types

of slang and the slang function in the movie.she used descriptive qualitative

method to analyze data. The result, she found two finding. The first finding is the

slang types, there are 5 types of slang employed by the character Ramona and

Beezus movie. The types of slang words are freshand creative, flippant initative,

acronym, and clipping. Meanwhile the second findings is the slang function of the

used of slang.

Hanggoro (2011) analyzed the slang terms in The American Gangster

movie, directed by Ridley Scott. The thesis disscuses about the meaning, kinds

and reason of using slang in American Gangster movie. The main objective of the

research is to know the kinds of slang terms and the reason of using them in

American Gangster Movie. She used qualitatitave method to analyze data. The

5
writer finds the research findings that there initialized in the movie, they are

society and soldiers’ slang, however, he only foccuses on the slang terms that

have high frequency, it is society slang.

The research of slang in English also had been conducted by Wahyuni

(2016). In her research she found there are number of types slang language used

in the Ocean‟s Eleven movie. In this research, the researcher has been finding

slang language in this movie. She concluded that slang language in the movie can

be classified into the society slang, workmen’s slang, and public house slang. She

used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data.

2.2. Concept

2.2.1. Slang Words

Slang is something that everybody can recognize but nobody can define.

The literal meaning of slang according to the Oxford dictionary is a type of

language consisting of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are

more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular

context or group of people. Finegan (2008) said that slang is particularly popular

among teenagers and college students in general. Akmajian et al (1998) also

added that slang has some salient features, first slang is part of casual informal

styles of language use, second slang is like fashions in clothing and popular

music, changes quite rapidly, third specific areas of slang are often associated

with a particular social group, and hence one can speak of teenage slang,

underworld (criminal) slang, the slang of the drug culture and so on. The speaker

uses slang in order to achieve social dynamics with the people to whom he/she is

6
speaking and slang outlines social spaces, and attitudes towards slang helps

identify and construct social groups and identity (Adams, 2009:57). It means that

when someone uses slang, she/he exposes ideas, feeling, attitude as how she/he

wants to perceive the people that talk to and how she/he wants those people to

perceive her/him, to infer what she/he means. Adams believe that slang can just as

well be playful and a joking way of rebelling against standard language to mark

the difference between e.g. parents and children (in-crowd versus out-crowd), but

the children do not necessarily have wicked intentions with the use of slang. He

also mentions that slang is not slang until someone recognizes it to be slang

(Adams, 2009:62). It means that the addressee must be able to recognize the

speaker’s intent and to determine that what they are hearing is slang

2.2.2. Movies

A Movie or motion picture includes Photographs, diagrams, or pictures in a

series which projected in a screen by a projector for process in turning in a screen

that cause appearance in screen look natural movement (Sharon and Weldon,

1977: 93). Movies are one of media to affect people mind in this time. They affect

masses in childhood and youth (Joel Spring, 2005: 351). Besides, according to

Cambridge Dictionary, film is “a series of moving pictures, usually shown in a

cinema or on television and often telling a story.”

2.2.3. Jumanji 2

Kasdan. The casts are Dwayne Johnson as Spencer, Jack Black as Bethany, Karen

2.3. Theoretical Framework

2.3.1. Slang Words

According to Burdová (2009:8), slang is considered an independent non-

literary language formation existing in a language and closely connected with its

terminology. The etymological origin of the word, as well as its precise definition,

seems to be ambiguous. Several theories about the origin exist. The word slang is

supposed to be derived from the word s´ language in England (18th Century) and

was originally used to describe the vulgar language spoken by certain subcultures,

e.g. soldiers or musicians´ slang. Moreover, slang words and expressions are

characterized by a high degree of informality, familiarity, and vocabulary

richness. They are realized by a specific group of people whose members are

connected by some particular link such as territory (Californian), age (teenagers),

subculture (students), and mainly occur in the spoken form of the language.

8
Acording to Pel and Gaynor in Ari Hanggoro (2011) slang is a style of

language faintly common use, produced by popular adaptation and extension of

the meaning of existing words and by coining new words with disregard

scholastic standard and linguistic principles of the formation the words: generally

peculiar to certain classes and social or age group. And another definition from

Yule, George (2006:211) described, Slang or “colloquial speech‟ are words or

phrases that are used instead of more everyday terms among younger speakers and

other groups with special interests. Slang mostly used by younger speakers,

although there are older speakers used it for their communication. Younger

speakers give effect toward the forming of slang.

2.3.1.1. Types of Slang

A. Cockney Slang

cockney slang is a form of english slang wich orginatate from End East of

England. At first, cockney slang only used by working class in England. But

nowdays, almost of all people in England used cockney slang especially in

London. This slang has been popularized by film, music and literature. Cockney

slang is the brightest spot in England because it has a very pronounced accent

forexample there a change in consonantal variation of th to f or v sound, as in

muvah for mother or fank you for thank you. In society of England, this slang is

very easy to be understood directly:

below are some example of cockney slang which taken from book “ a dictionary

of slang and unconventional english” by Partridge ( 2006):

9
1. airy-fairies, means (large) feet

2. back double, means a back street

3. gosher, means a heavy blow or punch

These example categorized as cockney slang because all of them are this

discovered in British, where cockney is commonly used. The word airy-fairies is

used by London evening news, 20 nov.1937; while a back double is used by

Gerald Kersh, A British novelist in his novel night and the city and gosher is used

by A. Neil Lyons, and British journalist in his novel hookey.

B. Public House Slang

The definitions of public house slang is considered as public house group of

words or phrase that makes up for the smallness of the recorded vocabulary by the

nature of the subject. It is genial cheery, materialistic, but not gross nor cynical.

The example are below which taken from: the routlege dictionary of historical

slang” by Patridge (2006) :

1. Booze-shunter, means a beer drinker.

2. War cry, means mixture of stout and mild- ale understood.

3. Round the corner, means having head something strong to drink.

The term “booze-shunter” used by the south-western porters and guards

who frequented the pubs around waterloo station, originated the term, which soon

become general among the police officers society. While the term “war-cry” has a

satirical refrence to the salvation army, which speaks stoutly in polite language.

And the term “round the corner” commonly used by lower class people about

year 1895-1930. From the explanation above, it is clear that these slangs belong to

10
public house slang because of them have relation with public house or commonly

called it as tavern.

C. Workmen’s Slang

This types of slang has a link with public house’s slang, yet, there is a

difference between them. The characteristics of the users of workmen’s slang do

not mention the real “ something” but they call it with another name that already

used an understood among them. Forexample, workmens from mining or

ironworks will said brass instead of money. The example below were taken from

book “ a dictionary of slang and unconventional english” by Partridge ( 2006) :

1. Jumping Jinny, means a mechanical stamper used in road-repairs

2. Bank up, means to complete a liberal scale, to reinforce generously, to lay

in a mighty store.

3. Sling one’s hooks, means to be dismissed.

The term “ jumping jinny”, was found around year 1920. This slang even

used by the London evening news, 7 december 1936. While “ bank up” used for

the first times in 1896 by Labor in north of England and “ sling one’s hooks”

comes from mining disrict. It refers to a hooked bag which is hung up in dressing

room, and contains such things as the miner does not requare down the shaft. By

all of these explanations and the meaning of the slang. These slangs are clasified

as workmen’s slang.

D. Tradesmen’s Slang

In tradesmen’s slang as in workmen’s slang, some words are related to

origin slang and the users are the workmen too. But, the difference is there are

11
four typical users of tradesmen’s slang: tailors, butchers, chemist and builders.

The tailors have the largest numbers of slang terms. The examples below were

taken from book “ slang: today and yesterday” by Partridge (2004):

1. Tradesmen’s for tailors: house of parliament, means a meeting of tailors

assistant and apprentices in the shop, especially for a serious purpose.

2. Tredesmen’s slang for butchers: Turkey buyer, means a person of

considererable important.

3. Tradesmen’s slang for chemist: tammarinds, means money. This word is

closely reflects the nature of the chemist trade. In other word, this slang on

the used by chemist.

4. Tradesmen’s slang for builders; flannel jacket, means the neavy on heavy

work has so long and unexpectionally worn flannel.

E. Slang in Art

Slang in art is still related to society. Words or phrases if slang in art are

quikly adopted by society, although there are only a few words known as artistic

slang. According to Partridge (2004:221), slang in art appears in seventeenth

century when slang was brought in the stage from the first time in Richard

Brome’s comedy A Fovial Crew. Futhermore, this slang is considerable more

difficult than other slang terms, the meaning is so difficult to guess in present day.

The examples below were taken from book “ A Dictionary of Slang and

Unconventional English” by Partrigde (2006):

1. Drawing , means a picture in water-colour.

12
2. Gamut, means a picture, a detail, etc., in tone with its accompaniments or

environment.

According to Partridge (2004:340), the term “drawing” was discovered in

1870 by Barrere and Leland. While, according to the explanation in book “ A

Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English”, the slang words “ gamut” was

used for the first time 1870, but in 1930 this slang was obsolete. These slangs are

clasified as slang in art because these slangs show the characteristic that belong to

slang of art and they are clearly written in the book “A Dictionary of Slang and

Unconventional English”.

F. Slang in publicity

This type of slang is often used for commrnce, because much of modern

commerce depent on public city, a firm needs the catchy phrase or rhymes that

can impress the public. The example below were taken from book “A Dictionary

of Slang and Unconventional English” by Partridge (2006):

1. In do a Garbo, means to avoid press reporters and photographers and other

public city

2. Worth a guinea a box, means a small, cheap, yet good or usefull article.

3. Kelper, means a Falkland Islander.

The term “in do a garbo” was used for the first time in 1925, but nowdays,

this slang is never heard again. The slang word ”Worth a guinea a box” is

derived from considirably older slogan of Beecham’s Pills. And the word

“kelper” is nickname that recieved wide publicity during the crisis of 1982. Thus,

13
these examples are beloging to slang of publicity because the meaning and

explanation of these slangs are having connection with slang ini publicity.

G. Slang in Theatre

Slang in theatre is related with slang in art because theatre is one of art term.

According to Partridge (2004), slang used for the first time on stage in sixteenth

century. Theatre slang begins to develop in nineteenth centuries and expands it is

influence on ordinary and informal spoken english. Therefore theatrical slang litle

by litle gained a status in first part. For example the Roman writers Plautus,

Horace, Juvenal, and Petronius used slang for stylistic purpose and Shakepeare

also used slang in his plays.

In theatre slang, there are some familiar terms, such as actor by professional

is called pro. The man who is occasinally hire at trifling remuneration to come

upon the stage as one of a crowd, or when a number of actors are wanted to give

affect is name a supe. The band or orchestra is called as manageria. Ben is for

benefit and sal for salary. Below is the example of theatrical slang which are

taken from book ”slang : To-day and Yesterday” by Partridge (2004)

1. Acting lady, means an incapable actress. From the poor acting of the great

majority of society woman and girls that go on stage.

2. Paper house, means theatre that at a given performance has an audience

consisting mainly of those who have come with “paper” complimentary

ticket.

These example includes in theatre’s slang based on the characteristic of the word

connected to its theory.

14
H. Slang in public school and university

The main source of this slang is students, because they are fresh and full of

creativity. Every school has its own special words known to no other school. The

example of public school slang below were taken from book “A Dictionary of

Slang and Unconventional English” by Partridge (2006):

1. Bonse, means head, for example “look out, or I’ll fetch you a whack across

the bonse

2. Bung, means a lie, forexample “ everything he said is a bung”

3. What’s the mat? Means what is the matter?

Slang in university is different from the slang used in public school when

students leave the school and go to university, the grow in to adults, choose to do

new things or ways of thinking in the prefers to create their own roles of

almamater. The example of university slang are:

1. Black and tame, means an oxford undergraduate.

2. Leccer, means a lecture. This slang commonly used by oxford

undergraduate since early 1890S.

3. Brute, means one who has not matriculated

The slang word “ black and tame” orginated from oxfod university and

derived from the black gown and tameo shanter affective at that period, with a

pun on the black and tan. While leccer is commonly use by oxford

undergraduate since early 1890S . and the term brute comes from Cambridge

University on nineteenth centuries; it is probably derived from standard English’s

word brute.

15
I. Society slang

Society slang is commonly used in daily speaking and connected to the

society. Every society group uses some types of slang and by association, those

words or phrase become property that belong to that group. In the modern world,

slang has become so much defining trait of many groupsthat it is impossible to

ignore the impact it has had on western society.

There are so many slang colloquial speech of society, most of the words

soon disappear, but a considerable number of them make good their place in

ordinary speech. Moreover, society slang shows a joyously or jauntily over the

object and the practice of the slang user’s own calling. The examples below were

taken from book ” A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English” by

Partridge (2006)”:

1. Come the rothschild, means the pretend to be rich.

2. Repulsive, means unpleaseant or dull.

3. Silver pheaseant, means a beautiful society woman.

The slang come the Rothschild is derived from the legendary wealth of the

famous family. This slang was found in 1880 but never used again in 1914. While

the term repulsive used for the first time in 1930 by Evelyn Waugh, in Vile

Bodies, “isn’t this a repulsive party?” and the term silver pheasant used the first

time in 1920 by Manchoon. Due to the explanation above, these examples include

in society slang.

16
J. Slang in Medicine

Medical slang is slang used by doctors and nurses. The eaxample of this

slang is very hard to find. According to Partridge ( 2004:280), ware gives four

terms used in 1999: bone-clother, port wine, for which stout is now usually

subtituted as fattener; locum (short for locum tenens) still very commonly

employed by doctors and clergymen; pith, the spinal chord when severed; to be

slated, to die, or more precisely to be doomed to die. Ware only has very few

medical slangism list because doctors very rarely talk “shop” to other than doctors

and because, in the words of the one notable authority on medical slang. Below is

the exanple of medical slang according to book “A Dictionary of Slang and

Unconventional English” by Partridge (2006):

1. Lord have mercy ( up) on me ,means the “ iliac passion”, a ‘colic’ of the

small guts.

2. Sciatic , means a sciatic nerve.

The slang “Lord have Mercy (up)on me” appears for the first time sixteenth

century for medical used, according to Junius’ Nomenclator, by the homelier sort

of Phisicians. While “sciatic” used for the first time by a young Physician named

E.F. Brett Young in 1919. Based on the meaning and the explanation, these slang

include in medical slang.

K. Soldier’s Slang

Soldier’s slang is slang is slang terms that comes around the army

community that is generally used by soldiers. In English-speaking countries, it

often takes the form of abbreviations/ acronyms or derivations of the NATO

17
phonetic Alphabet, or otherwise incorporates aspects of formal military terms

and concept. Military slang is often used to reinforce or reflect (usually friendly

and humorous) interservice rivalries. The example of this slang are:

1. BOHICA stands for bend over, here it comes again

2. FIGMO describes a person, especially one who has a short remaining time

on station, who has a lax attitude toward their work.

3. SNAFU stands for the sareastic expression situation normal: all fucked up.

BOHICA is an item of acronym slang which grew to regular use amongst

the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam War. The acronym “FIGMO”

stands for “Fuck it, I’ve got my orders’, of ‘Finally I Got My Orders’. While the

acronym “SNAFU” is believed to have originated in the United States Marine

Crops during World War II. It is a well-known example of military acronym

slang, though it is sometimes bowdlerized to all fouled up or similar. It means the

situation is bad, but that is a normal state of affairs. By all these meanings, the

examples above include in military slang.

2.3.1.2. Characteristics of Slang

People use slang language because they are individuals who desire

uniqueness. They think using slang language can represent the certain sub social

group’s identify, because it is cool, or it seems like a fashion when everybody

likes it, it will be often used people. A word can be qualified as slang if that word

fmeet some characteristic of slang. According to Sumarsono (2007: 155), there

are six characteristics of slang language:

18
1. Clipping

In linguistics, clipping is the word formation process which consists in the

reduction of a word to one of its parts. Clipping are not coined as words beloging

to the standard vocabulary of a language. They originate as term of a special

group like schools, army, police, the medical profession, etc. For example, exam

(ination), math (ematics), and lab (oratory) originated in school slang; spec

(ulation) and tick (etcredit) in stock-exchage slang; and vet (eran) and cap (tain) in

ramy slang. While clipping terms of some influential groups can pass into

common usage, becoming part of standard english, clipping of a socially

unimportant class or group will remain group slang.

2. Metathesis

Metathesis is the re-arranging of sounds or syllables in a word, or of words

in a sentence. Most commonly it refers to switching of two or more contigous

sounds. In bahasa indonesia, metathesis is one of Prokem’s language variation.

For example: sobek for besok, riping for piring, and neber for bener.

3. Creative

Slang is created from new term, so it needs the creativity of the creator.

Thus, the creator should be able to create a new term which is imaginative,

innovative, productive, even shocking, and amusing; for example the word ‘bird’

in slang language has a meaning as “girlfriend”.

4. Acronym

Acronym is word composed of the result of the initials of several words.

Usually these components are individual letters or parts of words or names. The

use of acronym in slang often use by young generations in their communication

19
especially in web communication. Web communication has become a part of

teenagers’ everyday life. Its role is to commicate rapidly, briefly, usually with a

lot of slang words. The examples of acronym are: “LOL” (Laughing Out Loud),

“KIT” (Keep In Touch), “BTW” (By the Way).

5. Use the existing words

It means slang expressions are derived from exiting word with acquiring

new meaning. The emergence of this “new” word, in linguistics point of view,

will increase our vocabulary. So, the more new words derived from exiting words

the words, the more creative slang user is. The example is like the word “chick” in

slang language has a meaning as “girl”

6. Metaphore

Metaphor means transfering the qualities and associations of one object to

another in order to make the meaning vivid in their mind. Usually metaphor can

be noticed through the use of verb ‘to be’. Metaphor is implied since it does not

use the words “like” or “as”. The metaphor in other words estabilishes an analogy

between objects without actually saying that it is establishing this contrast. The

example of metaphor is : “my love is flower” means “I have a good event in

Love”

2.3.2. Movie

20
Cambridge Dictionary, film is “a series of moving pictures, usually shown in a

cinema or on television and often telling a story.”

Movies, also known as films, are a type of visual communication which

uses moving pictures and sound to tell stories or inform (help people to learn).

People in every part of the world watch movies as a type of entertainment, a way

to have fun. For some people, fun movies can mean movies that make them laugh,

while for others it can mean movies that make them cry, or feel afraid. Most

movies are made so that they can be shown on big screens at movie theatres and at

home. After movies are shown on movie screens for a period of weeks or months,

they may be marketed through several other media. They are shown on pay

television or cable television, and sold or rented on DVD disks

or videocassette tapes, so that people can watch the movies at home. You can also

download or stream movies. Older movies are shown on

television broadcasting stations.

A movie camera or video camera takes pictures very quickly, usually at 24

or 25 pictures (frames) every second. When a movie projector, a computer, or

a television shows the pictures at that rate, it looks like the things shown in the set

of pictures are really moving. Sound is either recorded at the same time, or added

later. The sounds in a movie usually include the sounds of people talking (which

is called dialogue), music (which is called the "soundtrack"), and sound effects,

the sounds of activities that are happening in the movie (such as doors opening or

guns being fired). In the 20th century the camera used photographic film. The

product is still often called a "film" even though there usually is no film.

21
As the explanation above about movie, There are five types of movie that

researcher found in an article. They are:

1) Action

The action adventure movie contains formulas and components that include

the concepts of right and wrong, good “guys” and bad “guys,” physical action,

fights, chases, explosions, state-of-the-art special effects, an emphasis on

performance and athletic feats and stunts, and heroes overcoming obstacles and

dangers to accomplish an important and moral mission (Cawelti, 1976; Neale,

2000; T. Sobchack, 1988; Troy, 1992). Some scholars believe the action

adventure genre provides certain perks and rewards to their audiences, including a

cathartic feeling caused by swift justice and a moral victory, sexual sensation

caused by the ebb and flow of excitement that builds and finally is released at the

end, stimulation and reward through action and effects, and inspiration through

the heroes (Dyer, 1994; Tasker, 1998; Troy, 1992).

2) Comedy

Comedy includes two types, the screwball/romantic comedy and the clown

comedy (Gehring, 1988a, 1988b).

a. The screwball comedy, which emerged around 1934, contained a

battle of the sexes in which an eccentric, free-spirited, zany, and

liberated female pursued an unknowing, less assertive, easily

frustrated male who was exposed and ridiculed (Gehring, 1988b,

Harvey, 1987; Kaminsky, 1985; Schatz, 1981). What we now know as

the romantic comedy developed out of the screwball comedy of the

30s and 40s (Shumway, 1995). A romantic comedy is a film focused

22
on a romantic relationship, with characters overcoming problems by

either submitting to or rejecting love, which portrays the struggle for

supremacy and status between men and women (Gehring, 1988b;

Henderson, 1986; Kaminsky, 1985; Mernit, 2000, Potter, 2002).

b. The second type of comedy, the clown comedy, contains a comic

figure or figures around whom the storyline, often weak, revolves

(Gehring, 1988a). Physical and visual comedy plays a large part in

this type of comedy. According to Gehring, these films often contain

“team” interactions. A single clown often uses another character,

usually a very straight, focused individual to bounce his/her humor

off. These are often seen in films containing duos, such as crime/cop

comedies and road comedies.

3) Drama

Dramas focus on the plot and the script, focusing on the concern with

situation and plot (Elsaesser, 1995; Williams, 1998). Drama allows viewers to feel

sympathy and provides a therapeutic effect through the protagonists’ overcoming

powerful forces that make them victims (Lipkin, 1988; Williams, 1998). Drama is

a serious genre that includes tragedy in some aspect, conveys moral value through

emotion, and whose story is told through the dialogue that demonstrates and

portrays relationships (Doane, 1998; Elsaesser, 1995; Lipkin, 1988, Williams,

1998).

4) Horor

Horror films are politically charged and contain nature versus materialism

and rural versus urban themes that allow viewers to experience repressed political

23
and social discontent (Kawin, 1995; Wood, 1988). Horror films are oriented to the

youth market who attend them to see their peers terrified (Sanjek, 2000; Tudor,

2002)

5) Science fiction

Science fiction addresses the conscious rather than the unconscious,

speculating on technology, gimmicks, and the perfectible future and relying on

society’s anxiety about technology and its growth and potential for destruction

with the possibility of no future (Kaminsky, 1985; Kawin, 1995; Tarratt, 1995).

One of the most common themes in science fiction films is that humans are their

own worst enemy (Kaminsky, 1985; V. Sobchack, 1988). The fact that each genre

has a different focus and purpose might change the way people communicate with

each other. Action adventure films focus on activity, saving the day, and effects.

Comedies and dramas focus on relationships and plots, although in different ways,

with laughter and emotion respectively. And horror and science fiction films focus

on fear, again in different ways, through fear of the unexpected and fear of the

future respectively. Because the emphasis for each genre is on different aspects,

one might assume the communication behavior would be different as well.

friends once again, and Bethany is making plans to go backpacking, while

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD

In this chapter, the writer would like to present the method that will be used

for this study. This chapter consists of research design, research locus, type and

data resource, method and technique of data collection, research procedure and

method and technique of data analysis.

3.1 Research Design

The design of this study used descriptive qualitative method. Descriptive

research asks questions about the nature incidence, or distribution of variable; it

involves describing but not manipulating variable. A descriptive research declares

something naturally, so the researcher just can measure what already exist. There

were two basic reasons why the writer used a qualitative method. First, the data

collections in this study are mostly in the form of description and explanation.

Second, the data collection is not randomly taken. The writer uses slang term that

is occur in Jumanji 2 movie as the data analysis because they are chosen to yield

the findings.

3.2 Data Source

In order to make the analysis easier the researcher needs to use the source of

data. The source of data is Jumanji 2 movie, a movie by Jake Kasdan based on a

book by Chris Van Allsburg. Jumanji has two version but same story, the first

version has title Jumanji 1 made in 1995, but the writer choose Jumanji 2 because

there are new slang words in it and Jumanji 2 also got the high rate in some movie

sites on the internet like LK21, INDOxx, GANOOL, and so on. And the writer

27
will download the movie fromm LK21 because it is the best movie sites in

indonesia.

3.3 Method and Technique of Data Colection

In this research the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. Qualitative

research is the research study that investigates the relationship, the activity, the

situation or the material (Fraenkel and Wallen,1990:502). For collecting data the

writer will analyze and observe the types of slang words which related to this aim

of study. Therefore, this study used classified as documentary analysis

3.4 Research Procedure

For collecting the data, the writer compiled an observation through several

these steps as follows:

1. The writer downloaded Jumanji 2 movie and some subtitle.

2. The writer has watched the movie several times to know all of the stories

well

3. The writer collected all of Jumanji 2 dialogues in the form of English

subtitle become data in the form of script.

4. The writer identified the English subtitle in the form of dialogue to find

slang word.

5. The writer classified all slang word and phrase which are found in the movie

6. The writer categorized the slang words that found in the movie into seven

types of slang.

7. The writer reported the data about types of slang words found in the movie.

28
3.4 Method and Technique of Data Analysis

Moleong (2002:52) stated that analyzing the is called as a process of

organizing and arranging the data into pattern, category and a set of basic

classification. Therefore in this research the writer will uses the descriptive

qualitative which is used to analyse types of slang by Patrigde (2004:204).

29
