Administrating Engineering Base in a Network

1 Administrating Engineering Base in a

Network
Engineering Base has a three-tier client/server architecture. The application is structured
into three levels: User interface, business logic, and database. In a typical network envi-
ronment, the user interface is installed on the client computer. The business logic and
the database are installed on the server computer.

Typically, with the installation of Engineering Base, a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
Standard is installed.

1.1 Server Hardware Recommendations

You may find current hardware recommendations at
http://www.aucotec.com/hr

-1-

1.2 Administrating User Accounts

To access the Engineering Base database, every user must be a member of the local En-
gineering Base group on the server computer. The Engineering Base group is automati-
cally created during the installation. The installation also creates a shared folder with the
name Engineering Base Transfer with full access for all members of the Engineering Base
group.
• If you are working in a Domain
Add the users to the local Engineering Base group on the server computer.
• If you are working in a Windows Workgroup
Create the remote users with identical login names and passwords on the server comput-
er. Add these users to the local Engineering Base group on the server computer.

If a user is not registered in an Engineering Base user group for Windows, then
some features will not work correctly, like, for example, the export of worksheets to Ex-
cel and CSV. When starting Engineering Base, a message will be displayed.

If the server is a domain controller, with Windows 2003 SP2, for remote access to the
server, it is required to add all users from the local Engineering Base group also to the
Distributed COM Users group. Administrator rights on the server are required to add the
users.

To add users to the local Distributed COM Users group

1. From the Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, then Computer Manage-
ment.
2. Expand Local Users and Groups and then click Groups.
3. In the right pane, click Distributed COM Users.
4. On the shortcut menu, click Add to Group.
This opens the Distributed COM Users Properties dialog.
5. Click Add to add users to the group.
After adding the users to the group, accessing the Engineering Base database on the
server should be possible.

1.3 Firewalls
If you are using a firewall, exceptions for SQL Server and Engineering Base have to be
defined on the server computer and port TCP135 must be opened on the server and on
the client computers.
The following changes to the Windows Firewall are required in order to enable access to
the Engineering Base Server. During the installation of Engineering Base, these changes
are made automatically, however due to updates or patches to the operating system,
these changes might be reverted.
If you are using a different firewall, you need to make the changes accordingly. Adminis-
trator rights are required to make the changes.

To define the exceptions

1. From the Windows Control Panel, start Windows Firewall.
This opens the Windows Firewall dialog.

7. Click OK.
8. Close the Local Security Policy window.

1.5 Component Services

With Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the COM permissions restrict
remote calls that are not authenticated. By default, only members of the Administrators
group have the Remote Activation permission and the Launch permissions. This prevents
user accounts that do not belong to the Administrators group from starting COM compo-
nents.

To resolve the permissions issue

1. From the Windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools.
2. Open Component Services.
3. Expand Component Services, then Computers.
4. Select My Computer.
5. On the shortcut menu, click Properties.
This opens the My Computer Properties dialog.
6. On the COM Security tab, click Edit Limits in the Launch and Activation Per-
missions area or in the Remote Activation area.
7. Click the Engineering Base group, and then click Allow for the Remote Access
permissions and for the Remote Launch and Remote Activation permissions.
8. On the Default Properties tab, make sure the Enable Distributed COM on this
computer check box is checked.
9. Click OK twice, to accept the changes.

-8-

1.6 Remote Access

For remote access to the server via the Internet, we suggest using a Virtual Private Net-
work (VPN) or another secure connection. Access to the database is managed by Win-
dows authentication and SQL Server user management.
We suggest a minimum available bandwidth of 2048 KBit/s.

1.7 Where to Find Logfiles

This topic supports you to locate the different Engineering Base logfiles related to differ-
ent installation modes and tools.

EB ClientError.log
Provides information when upgrading the database to a higher version using the Data-
base Manager.
Path: <root>\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Aucotec\Engineering Base\Logfiles\

Related Database Manager Logfile

Path: <root>>\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Aucotec\Engineering
Base\Logfiles\DatabaseManager.log

Unattended Installation
The Windows Installer can be made to create a log file during the installation. This is
done with the following parameter:
msiexec.exe /I <msi package> /log "<LogFilePath>"

EB User Logfile
Its location differs according to the architecture used (one, two, or three tier).
Default path: <root>\ProgramData\Aucotec\Engineering Base\LogFiles on the Applica-
tion Server.
The information about the path actually used can be found in the Registry under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Aucotec\Engineering Base\<EB version>\Server on
the Application Server in the variable RuntimeRootPath. The name of the directory,
where the logfiles can be found, is in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Aucotec\Engineering Base\<EB version>\Server\Files
on the variable LogPath (default: LogFiles). The name of the logfile is composed of the
user name and the name of the Application Server.
A further aspect in client server mode is that the user may request the logfile to inspect
it. This results in copying the logfile from the logfile directory into the EngineeringBase
Transfer directory.

-9-
Administrating Engineering Base in a Network

Protocol of User Data (if activated)

In the Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Aucotec\Engineering
Base\<EB version>\Server\Settings in the variable UserLogging, the path to the proto-
col files on the server of the user interactions can be found.

Further Logfiles
• Temp (only files with EngineeringBase being part of the name)
C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Temp
• Engineering Base Log files
C:\ProgramData\Aucotec\Engineering Base\Logfiles
• SQL Server Log files (32 Bit)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\xxx\Setup Bootstrap\Log
xxx = 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, ...
• SQL Server Log files (64 Bit)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\xxx\Setup Bootstrap\
xxx = 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, ...
• Windows Temp (only files with EB_VisioSetup being part of the name)
C:\Windows\TEMP
• AppData
C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Aucotec\Engineering Base\Logfiles

Temp, Windows Temp, and AppData may differ as they are read out by program
code: .Net uses system variables and Registry entries. If these have been changed, e.g.
because of a different Windows version, then the resulting paths may be different.

HASP SRM Dongles

3 HASP SRM Dongles

Software protection can now be done by the HASP SRM dongles. There is a hardware
dongle HASP SRM HL and a software dongle HASP SRM SL.

If a virtual machine is licenced using a software dongle HASP SRM SL, then this
virtual machine must not be shifted or copied, and certain hardware components, e.g.
network card, MAC address, or Host ID, must not be changed. Otherwise, the licence will
be set to "Disabled due to cloning". Using the Sentinel HASP License Admin Control Cen-
ter, you may check the current status of you licence at any time. For more detailed in-
formation, please, contact the licence producer Safenet.

By a firmware upgrade existing HASP HL dongles can be upgraded to HASP SRM HL

dongles. You may find the upgrade program on the installation DVD at
D:\Redist\HASP\HASP_FirmwareUpdate.exe and
D:\Redist\HASP\HASP_FirmwareUpdate.v2c (where D is the letter for your DVD drive).
With this dongles detaching of licenses is not possible.

4.3 Optimizing Microsoft SQL Server for better

Performance
To increase the overall performance of the Microsoft SQL Server, we recommend using
different physical hard disks for the data file and for the log file of the SQL Server data-
base. To use different hard disks for the data file and for the log file, you need to select
the appropriate folders in the Create database wizard of the Engineering Base Data-
base Manager.
You should also limit the maximum memory that is used by the SQL Server to 75% of
the RAM.

To limit the maximum memory that is used by the SQL Server

1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click SQL
Server Management Studio.
The dialog Connect to Server is opened. The SQL Server instance and the authen-
tication (Windows authentication) are preset. If you do not have the permission to
open the SQL Server Management Studio, please, contact your system administra-
tor.
2. Click Connect.
This opens the SQL Server Management Studio.
3. Select the SQL Server.
4. On the shortcut menu, click Properties.

memory (MB).
7. Click OK and quit the SQL Server Management Studio.

TIP You should optimize your database regularly. To optimize the database, use the
Optimize command from the Engineering Base Database Manager.

4.4 Optimizing Engineering Base for better

Performance
Some rules your users should keep in mind if performance is an issue:
• Empty the recycle bins in Engineering Base from time to time to decrease the size of
your database and therefore to save space on your hard disk.
• Disable (stop or remove) any Add-Ins (Auto Device Numbering, Auto Node Number-
ing) that you don't really need.
• Disable Automatic Wires (un-check the property for the project) if you don't need
wiring information constantly updated.
• Use the bus pins for intersections of connections whenever a potential is distributed
to a number of devices and detailed wiring information is not required.

- 35 -
Unattended Installation

5 Unattended Installation
Engineering Base offers, besides a standard installation for the product described in the
Installation Quick Reference, also options for unattended installations. The Installa-
tion Quick Reference is included in the product box. The unattended installations are
based on the Windows Installer.
The Windows Installer installs msi packages by using the executable msiexec.exe. This
executable can be run from the command prompt with certain installation parameters.
For details, see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-
us/library/cc759262(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_Install
To uninstall SQL Servers is not part of AucSetup.exe. Please run the Windows Control
Panel, navigate to Programs and Functions and start uninstalling from there.

Starting with Engineering Base version 6.6.0, the installation of the SQL Server is no
longer part of the Engineering Base installation. To install the SQL Server, run the
AucSetup.exe from the installation root. By default, this setup routine shows an instal-
lation information dialog. To suppress this dialog, run the AucSetup.exe with the argu-
ment silent from an elevated command prompt (e.g. …\AucSetup.exe silent). For the
use with Engineering Base, the SQL Server instance has to be configured. This remains
part of the standard setup of Engineering Base. Thus, you have to install the SQL Server
first and then run the Engineering Base setup routine.

Unattended Installation

5.1 Preconditions to run the Unattended Installation

Engineering Base offers besides a standard installation options for unattended installa-
tions based on the Windows Installer: The Windows Installer installs msi packages by
using the executable msiexec.exe. This executable can only be used to run unattended
installations, if you install the following system prerequisites files before (the files can be
found on the installation medium).
Install on both operating systems (x86 and x64):
1. Windows Installer 4.5 (Redist\WindowsInstaller4.5\...)

5.2 How to run the Unattended Installation

Engineering Base offers options for unattended installations based on the Windows In-
staller. The Windows Installer installs msi packages by using the executable msiex-
ec.exe. This executable can be run from the command prompt with certain parameters.
To install a certain package, the following command line is used:
msiexec.exe /I <msi package>
The Windows Installer can be made to create a log file during the installation. This is
done with the following parameter:
msiexec.exe /I <msi package> /log "<LogFilePath>"
Property values can be passed, too, to a Windows Installer instance using the command
line:
msiexec.exe /I <msi Package> /log "<LogFilePath>" <Proper-
tyName>=<PropertyValue>
Normally, the user interface of a Windows Installer package is suppressed by the control
switch /q. This can be used as /qn to suppress all dialogs or /qb to display a GUI with-
out user interaction.
The Engineering Base SetupMSI supports these two options. The display options of the
user interface are additionally configured using the following properties:

Property Name Effect Example

QUIET No user interface is dis- QUIET=yes

When the setup is executed in quiet mode, the Windows Installer package has to be pa-
rameterized (which is normally done through the user interface). Engineering Base pro-
vides a set of properties specifically defined for silent installation.

Examples:
• Complete installation: For an installation comprising basic user interface (progress
bar only), the Engineering Base Client and Server, Visio and SQL Server on the tar-
get system including certain product keys, and user information, the command line
looks like below. Please notice that if product keys are passed to the setup proce-
dure the property "AUC_LICENSETYPE" has to be set to the correct value (1 ≡ “Eval-
uation License” is default):

AUC_USER_ORGANIZATION="Doe’s Company"
AUC_PRODUCTKEYS="ABCDEFGH012345678,876543210HGFEDCBA"
AUC_LICENSETYPE="2" QUIET=YES”
• Server installation: To install the EB Server only (including SQL Server) with basic
user interface, use the following command line (please note that specifying product
keys is only required for a client installation).
msiexec.exe /I "D:\EngineeringBase.msi" /log
"c:\temp\EB_Unattended_Server_Install.log" AUC_INSTALLTYPE=3
AUC_USER_FULLNAME="John Doe" AUC_USER_INITIALS="JD"
AUC_USER_ORGANIZATION="Doe’s Company" QUIETBASIC=YES

QUIET overrides QUIETBASIC, which means that if QUIET is specified, QUIET-

BASIC is ignored.

Parameters:
To uninstall Engineering Base unattended, you have to use the standard parameters of
msiexec.exe!
Thus, you may switch the user interface of the Windows Installer package by the control
switch „/q“. This switch may be used as “/qn” to suppress all dialogs or “/qb” to display a
GUI without user interaction.
In addition, the “/log” parameter is available, too, to create a log-file of the process at
the specified location.

Examples:
msiexec.exe /X "D:\EngineeringBase.msi" /log "C:\Temp\EB_Unattended_Uninstall.log"

6 Windows Registry Settings

The registry is a database that stores configuration data about the user, installed pro-
grams and applications, and specific hardware.
The registry can be edited using the Windows Registry Editor. Please be careful if you
make any changes to your registry.

Improper Registry settings can have an adverse effect on your computer, even to
the point of rendering it useless. Ensure that you BACKUP the Registry before making
any changes to it. Better yet, let the system administrator make all changes to the Reg-
istry.

Default settings for Engineering Base are located in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aucotec\Engineering Base\<EB version>
User specific settings for Engineering Base are located in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Aucotec\Engineering Base\<EB version>

You should use the Registry Editor only if you are an advanced user.

You need administrator rights to change this registry setting.

If you have Engineering Base installed on a 64-Bit Windows system, the registry en-
tries shown on this page may be displayed differently. Please read the details in the topic

In 64-Bit versions of Windows, the system registration (registry) is separated in 32-Bit
and 64-Bit keys. If the Registration Editor (Regedit.exe) is started on 64-Bit systems, the
64-Bit version of the Registration Editor is started by default. This variant displays
both the 32-Bit and the 64-Bit keys. By this, registry entries of 32-Bit programs that
would normally be stored underneath HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE, are listed un-
der a separate registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node
This is also valid for Engineering Base.

If you want to use the 32-Bit Registry Editor, please enter the following text in the
"Open" field %systemroot%\syswow64\regedit and confirm your input.
The registry settings will now be shown as usual in the 32-Bit version of the Registry
Editor. Without using particular command line options, it is impossible to start the 32-Bit
variant and the 64-Bit variant of the Registration Editor simultaneously.
If you want to learn more about the differences between 32-Bit registration and 64-Bit
registration please also read the following description on the web:

6.2 Accelerate Preview

On a standalone system you can get better performance for the preview window if you
change the ImageFilePath to a local folder.

To change the ImageFilePath

1. Quit Engineering Base.
2. Start Registry Editor.
3. Look for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aucotec\Engineering Base\<EB
version>\Server\Files key.
4. Modify the ImageFilePath variable to a local folder (e.g. C:\Documents and Set-
tings\All Users\Application Data\Aucotec\Engineering Base\Tmp).
The next time you select a sheet, the preview is much faster.

This cannot be used if your computer is used as application server for other comput-
ers!

You need administrator rights to change this registry setting.

If you have Engineering Base installed on a 64-Bit Windows system, the registry en-
tries shown on this page may be displayed differently. Please read the details in the topic
about system registration in 64-Bit Windows versions.

6.3 Password for SQL Server

Only the system administrators should be able to access the SQL servers. Therefore, the
SQL server is password-protected.
The password of the administrator's account for accessing the SQL server via its man-
agement studio is
$$Auc0tec1985
You may use this password to access the SQL server in order to, e.g., manage the data-
bases and to control the user management.
The password may be changed using Change Password in the Engineering Base Da-
tabase Manager.

6.4 Adding an SQL Server

By default, the Open Database dialog only offers the SQL Server that is installed on the
computer with the Engineering Base Application Server. You can manually add SQL-
Servers from remote computers. However, since this increases network traffic unneces-
sarily, we do not recommend doing this in a larger network.

To add a SQL Server

1. Ensure you have administrator rights.
2. Start regedt32.
3. In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on the local computer, open SOFT-
WARE\Aucotec\Engineering Base\<EB version>\Server\Database.
4. Double click ServerNameList.
5. Add the remote SQL Server to the list.

You need administrator rights to change this registry setting.

If you have Engineering Base installed on a 64-Bit Windows system, the registry en-
