2. Mechanical– and hydraulical assembly

Hydraulic assembly

The hydraulic assembly must be properly done acc. to the hydraulic connecting diagram.
All hydraulic hoses of the carrier/drill rig must be laid acc. to the hydraulic connecting
diagram.

Hydraulic hoses must indicate the following marks:

- name of manufacturer
- date of manufacture
- type/model
- nominal width
- max. admissable operating pressure

Hydraulic hoses must never be tied up and the nominal diameter must be acc. to the
specifications of the hydraulic connecting diagram.

Due to safety reasons hydraulic hoses must be exchanged every 6 (six) years even if
there are not any technical defetcs. It is absolutely forbidden to work with used hydraulic
hoses.
Prior to the first operation and -at least once a year- an expert has to inspect all hydraulic
hoses. All defects have to be removed immediately.

In case any additional hydraulic valves are needed they have to be integrated and
connected acc. to the hydraulic circuit of the carrier/drill rig. In case Eurodrill drifters are
equipped with DRICON a special supply valve has to be provided (see annexe/techncal
data TA). It also is necessary to ensure that the pressure line of the percussion
mechanism –being disengaged- is connected with the tank without any pressure. This can
be achieved by using a hydraulic valve acc. to the hydraulic control symbol shown in the
annexe/technical data TA.

Putting into operation

1.General Safety Instructions

Check-ups and safety control prior to putting into operation

When putting Eurodrill hydraulic drifters/rotary head into operation, you must observe the
following safety instructions in order to avoid lethal injury, damage to the machine and
other material damage. The machine may only be put into operation by qualified persons
always watching the safety instructions. The following special qualifications are required:

- Only authorised persons are allowed to put the machine into operation watching the
safety instructions at all times.
- Make sure that no authorised persons remain in the operating area of the machine and
that no one is endangered by putting the machine into operation.
- Before starting the machine for the first time, make sure that all tools and foreign parts
have been removed from the machine.
- Before putting the machine into operation, activate all safety devices and emergency
stop switches.
- Make sure that allpersonnel is wearing the protective outfit.
- Before putting into operation check the direction of the motor of the drifter/rotary head.
- Before putting into operation check the function of the percussion mechanism of the
Eurodrill drifters.
- Prior to start the drifter/rotary head check the lubrification (see technical data in the
annexe: TA)
- Before starting the machine for the first time, check all technical special devices (see
description).
- Before starting operation check the tight seat of all screw connections.
- Before starting operation check all hose connections on tightness and leakage.
- Read the chapter "General safety instructions".
- Furthermore the instructions of the rig manufacturer prevail.

21
2. Special instructions of putting into operation

Operating temperature

Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary heads may only be put into operation -after careful warm
up- when the hydraulic oil in the operating circuit of the carrier/drill rig has reached its
operating temperature. You have to take special care of this during winter and operating
with the machine in cold areas.
In case you do not watch this instruction sealing elements in the Eurodrill hydraulic drifters
or rotary heads might get defective or completely damaged. Furthermore if you do NOT
follow these instructions immediate loss of warranty will be caused.

Testing the functions

Test the functions of rotary mechanism and percusison mechanism by enganging the
corresponding valves of the carrier/drill rig for a short time. The percussion mechanism
should never be operated longer than 20 %/min due to hazardous empty blows.
These blows could be absorbed by the damping device but this device is only provided for
working in intermittend operation (see description). All other sepcial designs like DRICON,
KHVE (hydraulic piston stroke adjustment), switchable gear stages can be tested and
controlled by the mandatory control valves of the drill rig acc. to the hydraulic connecting
diagram.

Drilling accessory

Installing flushing heads or similar drilling accessory to the shank adptor (striker bar) it is
necessary to take care that the components are free of grease and oil. This prevents that
the thread connection might get loose during breaking the drill pipes.
It mostly is difficult to handle drill string components and there is always a high risk of
getting hurt due to their heavy weight, their size and form.

26
3. Important instructions of operation

Drilling with mast directed upwards (over head)

While drilling with the mast directed upwards (angle > 90° to the vertical) and the use of
water flushing, dirt can get into the driving unit by rinse water what pours down the drill
string what will cause severe damage.

While drilling with hydraulic drifters / rotary heads which have the gear box oil lubricated,
gear oil can escape via the filter/breather when the mast is directed upwards.
This can cause an insufficient lubrication and severe damage as a result.

In such case it is required to contact Eurodrill for coordination of accordant arrangements.

In case you do not follow these instructions you will cause severe damage resulting in
immediate loss of warranty.

Drilling with DTH

While drilling with DTH (down-the-hole-hammer) it is mandatory that the driving unit or
better its bearing system will not be damaged by the backlashes of the DTH hammer. This
can be ensured by using an additional device such as a Shock Absorber or a Floating
Spindle.

Hydraulic valves

The needed hydraulic valves for the control of the technical devices (DRICON,
hydraulic piston stroke adjustment, etc.) have to be acc. to the connecting diagram.

Hydraulic hoses

All hydraulic hoses needed for the integration of the Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary
heads into the hyraulic circuit of the carrier/drill rig have to be acc. to the hydraulic
connecting diagram and have to be maintenained acc. to the instructions.

Oil filter

To avoid damages at Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary heads the user has to guarantee
an oil quality acc. to cleanlines requirement ISO 4406 18/13. This can be achieved –
under regular circumstances – with a p-line filter of 15 —m.

Gear oil

You absolutely have to note that you choose the correct lubricants acc. to the indicated
instructions as directed.
In case you do not follow these instructions you will cause severe damage resulting in
immediate loss of warranty (filling volume please see lubricating diagram).
Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary heads are originally filled with gear oil of the class as
listed below:

SAE 80W 90

In case Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary heads are used under extreme conditions, e.g.:
at hot/cold temperatures it might be required to use a different gear oil. Using a different
gear oil must be agreed in writing with Eurodrill.

33
2. Material and fuel, gas, oil

Hydraulic oil

To guarantee the function of Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary heads it is absolutely

required to use appropriate hydraulic oil. Eurodrill recommend mineral oil with a
guaranteed viscosity of 20-43 cSt regarded as a regular and typical operating temperature
of the carrier/drill rig.

Other brands of hydraulic oils – same as synthetic oils and mineral oils with VI - improved
or with a special additive (EP) – may only be used after written agreement with Eurodrill.

In case you do not follow these instructions you will cause severe damage resulting in
immediate loss of warranty.

Lubricants

To increase the life time of the mainly stressed parts of the Eurodrill hydraulic drifters /
rotary heads (like there are: shank adaptors, bushing, liners, flushing heads, etc.) it is
mandatory to lubricate these parts acc. to the intervals indicated in the lubricating diagram

Due to our experience Eurodrill use a lubricant made by the company Fuchs Lubritech
during fitting and initial lubricating of hydraulic drifters/rotary heads. Furthermore we can
also recommend the alternative lubricant made by the company: Klüber.

producer product Adresses of the companies are

Fuchs Lubritech Lagermeister TS Listed in chapter additional info.
KLÜBER Lubrication Microlube GL 261 / GL 262

In case other lubricants will be used by you it causes loss of warranty if you don’t have
Eurodrill’s agreement in writing.

Gas

It is only allowed to use nitrogen (N) with purity class 99.8% when charging the
accumulators (see accumulator). There is the risk of explosion and it is absolutely not
permitted to use gases other than directed.

34
3. Servicing and repair instructions

Maintenance of the flushing head

The lifetime of the seals in the flushing head is much longer when you exactly follow the
instructions of the lubrification plan (lubrification is mandatory at least once a week).
When you lubrify the point of lubrification in the front please take care that the opposite
plug is turned out so the remaining oil can get out; otherwise the pressure in the flushing
head will build up, and this damages the seals. Don’t forget to screw the plug back in.
In case there is no plug on the opposite side, you have to turn out the grease nipple and
after the remaining oil is let out, turn the plug back in again.
You have the change the seals immediately when fluid is getting out of the control boring
to avoid more damage in the flushing head.

35
3. Servicing and repair instructions

Seals

All seals used in Eurodrill products may ONLY be exchanged if really necessary, i.e.:
when leaks are discovered and an exchange will become necessary Eurodrill recommend
to exchange the complete seal kit of the component (gear, percussion mechanism,
flushing head, etc.).

It is mandatory during exchange of the seals to take care of having an extreme clean area
and to follow the instructions of installing the seals. In case you do not follow these
instructions you will cause severe damage resulting in immediate loss of warranty.

Breathers

Prior to operation always inspect, clean and/or exchange all breathers

installed at Eurodrill drifters and heads. A flawless function has to be guaranteed.

Oil filter

Prior to the first operation you have to check, to clean and if necessary to exchange all oil
filters of the carrier/drill rig what are in the hydraulic circuit of the Eurodrill hydraulic
drifters/rotary heads. After putting into operation the oil filters have to be serviced acc. to
the table as listed below:

Operating hours (h) Oil filter control

50 1.
500 2.
After that every 500 hrs / 4 times a year (at least)

Furthermore you always have to follow the instructions/indications of the rig manufacturer.
In case you do not follow these instructions you will cause severe damage resulting in
immediate loss of warranty.

36
3. Instructions for servicing and repair

Hydraulic oil change

Prior to the first putting into operation of the Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary heads you
must be absolutely sure that the hydraulic oil in the carrier/drill rig is free of any pollution or
dirt and is acc. to its required quality. If this is not the case you have to change the
hydraulic oil. In case you do not follow these instructions you will cause severe damage
resulting in immediate loss of warranty.
All other information about hydraulic oil changes are shown in the instructions of the rig
manufacturer.

Gear oil change and check up

To keep wear and tear at gear parts as low as possible it is required to change the gear oil
acc. to the intervals as listed below:

Operating hours (h) Oil change

500 1.
1500 2.
After that every 1000 hrs/once a year (at least)

When working in ranges of high speed and load the gear oil has a higher wear-out and the
result is that the oil change intervals have to be adjusted to this special stressing and
condition. You have to specify the oil class by taking an oil probe. You can take this oil
probe -while the rotary head is running- at the provided screw (6L). You also can find out
about the function of the central lubrication pump (position please see the lubricating
diagram).

In case the lubrication pump does not supply any oil you then have to check if the rotary
head is filled with enough oil. You have to carefully open one of the oil-drain plugs – which
has a red mark- and check the oil level. In case there is enough oil one of the lines of the
lubrication circuit might possibly be clogged up or the central lubrication pump is defective.

In case you do not follow these instructions you will cause severe damage resulting in
immediate loss of warranty.

37
3. Instructions for servicing and repair

Lubricating with grease

Lubricating Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary heads has to be done acc. to the lubricating
plan (see technical data in the annexe). It is mandatory to follow these intervals carefully,
this reduces wear and tear and increases the life time of the components what are used
under extreme stressing.

In case you do not follow these instructions you will cause severe damage resulting in
immediate loss of warranty.

4. Spare parts depot

4. Eurodrill recommend a stock of spare parts at the job site to guarantee that
Eurodrill hydraulic drifters / rotary heads work properly. We only guarantee the
original spare parts provided and supplied by Eurodrill.
