includes questions from the assigned readings. However, it is highly recommended that you cross-reference
information using supplemental readings available on Canvas that include: Garraty's "A Short History of the
American Nation,” Williamson’s “The Penguin History of Latin America,” Zinn's "A People's History,” Burn’s
“Latin America: A Concise Interpretive History,” and any additional documents available in the Canvas section or
suggested supplemental readings available in class as noted above. Your responses must be typed or hand-written in
black or blue ink. Include the question with your responses, as well as in-text citations and a works cited page. The
assignment should not exceed 20 pages. A digital copy will not be accepted, and late penalties will apply for late
assignments. This assignment is due May 1st, 2017 at 8:00 am for both classes.
Answer all of the following questions by fully meeting the demands of the prompts:

1) Discuss the causes for United States’ expansionist foreign policies during 1880-1929.
2) Examine the causes of the Spanish-American War (1898).
3) Compare and contrast the aims, implementation, and impact on the region for each of the foreign policies
listed below.

c. Moral Diplomacy
4) Evaluate the relative success of each of the foreign policies listed in question 13.
5) Examine the reasons for the United States’ move from neutrality to involvement in World War I.
6) To what extent were Wilson’s peace ideals actualized in the Treaty of Versailles and a post-World War I
world?
7) Examine the significance of the World War I peace process on the United States’ hemispheric status.
8) Examine the nature of, and reasons for, the involvement of Canada and any one Latin American country in
the First World War.
9) To what extent did World War I serve as a turning point in the history of the Americas?
