Critical Reflection

What parts of the lesson did the students seem most engaged?

- During group discussion when the students were asked to connect to the text and share what they had
marked on their personal copies.

With what parts of the lesson did students seem least engaged with?

- When was asking comprehension questions following the reading. Students were avoiding answering
and when they were called on, they were not all able to answer to the questions as much as I was
hoping.

List and describe all the active learning strategies you used during your lesson.
- Think-pair-share
- Marking important parts or ideas of their text
- Group Discussions

Please rate your ability to plan and use active engagement strategies in the following areas.

Preparation and research: How were you prepared to actively engage all learners? What could you have done
differently?
- I had planned on using think-pair-share and group discussion techniques. I think that I could plan to
use more active engagement strategies for the during reading portion of my lesson. Maybe involve the
students in summarizing each portion of the text as we read.

Written plan: Identify the sections of your lesson plan that included active learning strategies (use department
lesson plan categories)
- Guided instruction and independent practice. I also used in in my assessment section.

Presentation: How well do you think you engaged each and every student during your lesson?
- My group was only made up of 3 students, so I felt I was able to keep all of their attention and
engagement during most of the lesson. They all zoned out a little bit when I re-read the text to them a
second time.
Assessment: Describe how the strategies allowed you to assess student learning?
- Using these strategies helped me see that my students are still struggling with comprehension of a text
as a full piece. I need to keep involving these strategies to help them get the main idea of the text.
