Dragon Egg Dice Bag

(or Ladies’ Reticule)

YARN VERSION

This bag is crocheted with a solid background that won’t allow

dice or other small-ish items to fall out. If you use worsted yarn and
a size G hook it will be about 7” wide and 7.5” deep. Size will vary
with other yarn or hook sizes.

Suggested Materials:

 Worsted weight yarn

 size G hook
 stitch markers (optional, useful for marking ends of sc rows and Vs)
 large-eye needle for weaving in ends
 2 drawstrings* (approx 16” each)

Abbreviations used:

 st = stitch
 slst = slip stitch
 ch = chain stitch
 dc = double chain stitch
 hdc = half double chain stitch
 sp = space
 dc2tog = double chain two stitches together (see “Special Stitches” below)

Special stitches:

 dc2tog = double chain two stitches together: yo (yarn over), insert hook into 1st st, yo, pull loop through, yo, pull
thread through first 2 loops on hook, yo again, insert hook into 2nd st, yo, pull loop through, yo, pull thread
through first 2 loops on hook, yo, pull thread through the 3 remaining loops on hook. A dc2tog counts as a single
stitch.

 This pattern uses the crocodile stitch for the scales. If you are having trouble understanding how to crochet the
scales, searching for a video on “crocodile stitch” will almost certainly help. Note that most videos will not include
dcs between the Vs in the row before the scales.

 This pattern refers to 2 dcs into the same stitch as a V.

Pattern
This pattern is made up of 3 types of rows. Double chain (dc) rows provide the base for making the
scales. Scale rows are worked on top of the dc rows. Single chain (sc) rows handle the increases you
need for increasing the number of scales in the next scales row. Beginning in R5, sc rows are worked

into the preceding dc row.

Base Ch 4, join with slst to first chain (circle made)

(ok to substitute magic circle, if you like them)

R1 ch 1 (does not count as a stitch at the beginning of any row), 9 sc into circle, join with slst to first sc (9
sc)

R2 ch 1, 2 sc in same sc, 2 sc in each of the next 7 sc, join with slst to initial ch (18 sc)

R3 ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same sc (“V” made), *dc in next 5 sc, 2 dc in next sc (“V”)*, repeat *-* 2
more times, join with slst to top of initial ch-3 (21 dcs, including the 3 Vs)

R4 sc around the rightmost post of the V, ch 2 (counts as dc). Turn piece so the top of the V is to your
right. Working from right to left down the same dc work 4 more dc, ch 1. Turn piece so top of V is to
your left. Work 5 dc from left to right up the dc forming the other side of the V (scale made), ch 1, skip
next 5 sc, *5 dc working down post of next dc, ch 1, 5 dc working up other side of V, ch1, skip next 5 dc
*, repeat *-* 2 more times, join with slst to top of initial ch-3 (3 scales, 3 between-scale chs )

R5 ch 1, sc into the dc behind it (from the R3 dc row). Continuing to work in the R3 dcs, work 9 more scs
spread evenly over the next 6 dcs. *Work 1 sc over both the next dc from R3 and the ch-1 between
scales from R4. (This anchors the scale row to the previous row.) Work 9 more scs spread evenly over the
next 6 dcs.* Repeat *-* for the remaining scale. Slst to beginning sc. (30 scs)

R6 ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same sc (“V” made), *dc in next 5 sc, 2 dc in next sc (“V”)*, repeat *-* 4
more times, join with slst to top of initial ch-3 (35 dcs, including the 5 Vs)

R7 sc around the rightmost post of the V, ch 2 (counts as dc).
*, repeat *-* 4 more times, join with slst to top of initial ch-3 (5 scales, 5 between-scale chs )

R8 ch 1, sc into the dc behind it (from the R6 dc row). Continuing to work in the R6 dcs, work 9 more scs
spread evenly over the next 6 dcs. * Work 1 sc over both the next dc from R6 and the ch-1 between
scales from R7. Work 8 more scs spread evenly over the next 6 dcs.* Alternating between 9 and 8 scs
between scales, repeat *-* for each of the remaining 3 scales. Slst to beginning sc. (48 scs)

R9 ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same sc (“V” made), *dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc (“V”)*, repeat *-* 7
more times, join with slst to top of initial ch-3 (56 dcs, including the 8 Vs)

R10 sc around the rightmost post of the V, ch 2 (counts as dc).
*, repeat *-* 7 more times, join with slst to top of initial ch-3 (8 scales, 8 between-scale chs )

R11 ch 1, slst into the dc behind it (from the R9 dc row), ch 3, dc in same st. Continuing to work in the R9
dcs, work 5 more dcs spread evenly over the next 6 dcs. (If there are holes you can substitute dc2togs

for dcs as needed. A dc2tog counts as 1 dc in the next row.) *Work 2 dc (V) both over the ch-1
between scales from R10 and between the dcs of the V behind it from R9. (This anchors the scale row to
the previous row.) Work 5 more dcs spread evenly over the next 6 dcs.* Repeat *-* for each of the
remaining 6 scales. Slst to beginning sc. (56 dcs including 8 Vs)

R12 - 19 Repeat R10 and R11 four more times.

R20 Repeat R10 an additional time.

R21 slst into center of scale, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st (“V” made), ch 2. Work 2 dc (V) both
over the ch-1 between scales from R20 and between the dcs of the V behind it from R19. (This anchors
the scale row to the previous row.) *ch 2, work 2dc into center of next scale, ch 2, work 2 dc (V) both
over the ch-1 between scales from R20 and between the dcs of the V behind it from R19*. Repeat *-* 6
more times, ch 2 join with slst to top of initial ch-3. (16 Vs, 32 chs)

R22-R24 Repeat R20-R21 an additional time.

R25 Repeat R21 an additional time.

R26 ch 1, *sc between the dcs of the V, into next ch-2 sp work hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc*, repeat *-* 15 more
times, join with slst to 1st sc.

Finishing Tie off. Weave in ends. Weave drawstring into R26.

*Drawstrings
There are multiple options for drawstrings:
 crochet two chains of the desired length using same or complementary yarn
 make kumihimo or finger-loop braids using the same or complementary yarn for an attractive
smooth cord that’s easier to open and close than crocheted cords
 use shoelaces of matching or complementary color for another option that’s easier to open and
close than crocheted cords – and super easy (cut off the aglets (tips) and knot the ends after
weaving through)

Have fun!
