Guidelines for the jointers attending the training and the assessment program
These guidelines are being informed to all concerned well in advance to ensure that the Jointers
Assessment programs are conducted smoothly. All concerned are requested to take note of these
Guidelines/Rules and ensure compliance. Failure to comply with these may result in the candidate
being disallowed to appear for the assessment.

1. All candidates must reach the assessment venue by the scheduled time. Candidates who have
to travel long distances, must arrange the transportation considering the traffic delays etc.
The assessment will begin at the scheduled time and anyone arriving late will be returned
back.

2. Each jointer or a group of 2 jointers (same company) must have all the required tools in their
respective tool box. Tool boxes of all candidates will be checked prior to start of the
assessment and candidate not having the required tools, as per the list below, will not be
allowed to work. Borrowing of tools from other groups will not be permitted.

3. Crimping tool with the correct dies must be used. Candidates not having proper crimping tools
will earn negative points against their evaluation.

4. Gas torches must be of the correct type. Too big and too small gas torches are not accepted.

5. All candidates must bring the required consumables as listed in the tools list to complete the
job satisfactorily. The consumables too will be checked prior to start of the job.

6. All candidates must bring the required cable supports to ensure the cables are fastened
properly during the assessment. No cable supports will be available at the assessment venue.

7. Candidates appearing for re-assessment should furnish their Old Certificate number if any for
easy traceability.

8. Candidates must bring one recent (not older than 6 months) colour photograph along with
them.

9. All the candidates appearing for the test should wear overall suit, hand gloves, safety helmet
and safety shoes.

10. Fire blankets must be available with all the candidates appearing for the test.
Complete tools sets
In order to have a reliable installation, a jointer must have the required complete sets of tools in his
tool box. Working with improper tools will lead to unsatisfactory installation.

Cables to be arranged by Participants
1 Pcs X 6.0mtrs length of MV 3 core XLPE Cable will be needed for group of 2 Candidates on
installing of 01 Joint & 01 terminations. If only 1 candidate is attending the training, then
separate 1 Pc X 6.0-meter length of MV 3 core XLPE cable needed.
What will REPL supply?
The following cable size Joints and Terminations:
1 kit of MV/ XLPE 3 core straight through joint (For a group of 2 or 1 candidates)
1 Kit of MV/ KV XLPE 3 Core Indoor Termination (For a group of 2 or 1 candidates)
Day 1. Training
Note: The training course is not designed to train candidates with no prior cable jointing experience.
The fresh candidate participating in the course is required to have worked for a minimum 4 - 6
months under an experienced Jointer to gain a confidence in cable preparation and accessories
installation prior to appearing for an assessment. The training conducted for the candidates
appearing before the test is just to fine tune their skills and brief them about the cable preparation
tips, cable construction and functional requirement of each cable component and accessories.
The training session will be followed with an audio-visual presentation briefing about different types
of cable, cable construction and functional requirement of each cable components and accessories.
Thereafter the practical session will start followed with step wise cable preparation skill.
Finally, the closing session will be followed with a quick quiz., will have 4 options, and to select the
correct answers out of it. This will have no bearing on the rating of the candidates.
Day 2. Jointers Assessment
A jointer should study and understand all the installation steps of the applicable installation
instructions, before appearing for an assessment.
The trainer will make a general evaluation of each candidates step wise installation and rate his
performance during the assessment. The final result of the assessment will be based purely on the
performance of jointer. Result of any past assessment will have no bearing on the rating of a
candidate. The rating assigned by the trainer will be final. Critical installation steps having a direct
bearing on the assessment rating are as below.
1. Measurements of cable preparation
2. Removal of copper tape / Semicon screen
3. Cleaning of cable insulation
4. Cutting of XLPE insulation
5. Application of stress grading mastics
6. Earthing arrangements
7. Positioning and shrinking of tubing’s and components
The Skill Competence Certificate
This Certificate is issued to the candidate who qualifies to the rating level of Very good or Good. The
candidates who are rated as Average will not be eligible for this certificate. The Certificate is valid for
36 months from the date of issue and before the certificate expires the candidates must attend the
re-assessment program by submitting the old Certificate.
