1: Valve Functions
The valves on the system are the key to controlling the chlorine concentration. Opening and closing cer-
tain valves will change the flow through the chlorinator.

2: Adding Chlorine
Warning: Chlorine is a very powerful disinfectant and must be handled carefully. When removing the
chlorinator top or opening the container storing the chlorine source, concentrated chlorine fumes may
be present. Ensure the area is well ventilated and to not inhale the concentrated fumes.
The WMI chlorinator is designed to operate with 3-inch diameter chlorine tablets such as the OxyChem
ACL 90 Trichlor tablets or an equivalent (See Appendix 1 for detailed specifications). Always wear
gloves or otherwise protect your hands from direct contact with the chlorine.
Step A
Unscrew chlorinator ring clamp.
Step B
Remove clamp ring and top of chlorinator.

Step C
Place four chlorine tablets on the tray located inside the chlorine base. Always wear gloves or
otherwise protect your hands from direct contact with the chlorine.
Step D
Place top and clamp ring on chlorinator and tighten clamp ring until two ends of clamp ring are
touching.
NOTE: When finished, wash hands thoroughly as prolonged chlorine contact can cause mild
burns.

3: Testing Chlorine Concentration
The chlorine added by the WMI Chlorinator disinfects water and provides a chemical residual to
protect water that is collected and stored in containers. Although water is safe to drink with
chlorine concentration levels up to 4.0 ppm, WMI recommends a free chlorine concentration of
between 0.2 and 0.5 ppm at the point of distribution. For this reason, it is critical that water be
sampled and tested for free chlorine concentration at both Valve 6 (Sample Valve) and at the
distribution point(s) (i.e. tap stands) multiple times each day. Depending on the size of the pip-
ing network, chlorine concentrations higher than 0.5 ppm may need to be added at the chlorina-
tor to ensure that at least 0.2 ppm is available where the water is distributed.
The Potable Water Chlorinator Kit contains SenSafe free chlorine test strips manufactured by
Industrial Test Systems (see Appendix 2 for detailed specifications). Following the instructions
on the SenSafe bottle, test the chlorine level of the water in the collection tank. The target free
chlorine concentration is between 0.2 and 0.5 ppm.

4: Start Up
i. Pumping to a Storage Tank
Step A
Connect system to pump from source and storage tank as shown. Set valves V-1, V-2 and V-3 in
the open position. Close valves V-4 and V-6. Note: the configuration shown includes the op-
tional Totalizer & Rotameter add-on that may also be installed with the Potable Water Chlo-
rinator.
Step B
Turn on power source to pump. Water should begin flowing through the system.

Step C
Turn valve V-2 halfway between the open and closed position to divert water into the chlorina-
tor. Turn valve V-3 halfway between the open and closed position.
Step D
Wait 5 minutes. Sample water from valve V-6 and test the free chlorine concentration. Target
concentration is between 0.2 and 0.5 ppm.
Step E
To adjust free chlorine concentration follow instructions in Section 5: Regulating Chlorine Con-
centration. Always wait 5 minutes between each sampling.

ii. Shock Chlorinating a Tubewell or Borehole
Step A
Connect system to pump from source and storage tank as shown. Connect valve V-6 to hose or
pipe emptying into tubewell/borehole. Set valves V-1, V-2 and V-3 in the open position. Close
valve V-4 and open valve V-6. Note: an additional valve must be installed in between the sys-
tem and storage tank in order for this configuration to function properly. The configuration
shown includes the optional Totalizer & Rotameter add-on that may also be installed with
the Potable Water Chlorinator.
Step B
Turn on power source to pump. Water should begin flowing through the system.

Step C
Close valve V-2 to divert all water into the chlorinator. Turn valve V-3 halfway between the
open and closed position.

5: Regulating Chlorine Concentration
Valve V-2 creates back pressure that diverts water through the chlorinator. Valve V-3 controls chlorine
adjustments. Take the following actions to adjust the free chlorine concentration:
Step A
Ensure that valve V-2 is rotated halfway between open and closed.
V-3
V-2
V-1
Step B
To increase chlorine concentration, rotate valve V-3 counterclockwise (towards the open posi-
tion). To decrease chlorine concentration, rotate valve V-3 clockwise (towards the closed posi-
tion). Do not close valve V-3 completely.

6: Troubleshooting
Fixing a leak
If there is a leak in the system, turn off the pump and fix the leak by taking the following measures:
If the leak is at a joint that has been glued together, dry the pipe connection and add some PVC
cement to the rim. Allow this cement to dry and turn the water back on to see if the leak has
been fixed. If not, replace the leaking PVC fittings.
If the leak is at a union connection of two assemblies, tighten the connection more. If the leak
persists unscrew the connection and check that O-ring is in place.
If the leak is at the chlorinator, tighten the clamp ring. If the leak persists remove the clamp
ring and check that O-ring is seated properly with no dirt in the O-ring groove.
