PART 1

1. Identify a problem that you are interested to study. Provide a brief description of your
study.
 Problem that we are interested to study is how many hours does UMP students
sleep every night.
 We would like to know how many hours that UMP students spend in average to
sleep.

2. Choose a single quantitative variable that describe your chosen problem. Identify the
type of level of measurement for the variable.
 The quantitative variable is hours of sleep and the level of measurement for the
variable is ratio level.

3. State your population.

 UMP degree student.

4. Divide the data collected into two significant groups that related to the study.

(i) State the name of the groups.

 Female
 Male

(ii) Present the data collected according to the groups.

iii) Identify the method of data collection being used. Provide the significant
evidence.
 The method of data collection being used was questionnaires and surveys.

iv) Identify which sampling method you used to collect the data. Explain the
sampling method process.
 Sampling technique we used to collect the data is voluntary sampling. Questions
were written in the form of google drive and posted in whatsapp groups. Many
UMP students have responded to the questionnaire as it was easy for us to collect
the data that we needed.

5. For each group, select two sets of data of different sizes. Therefore, you should
have four sets of data in total.

(i) The data selected is presented as shown in the following table.

8,8,8,10. 8,8,8,8,8,9,9,10.

ii) Identify which sampling method you used to select the four sets of data. Explain
the sampling method process.

 The sampling method used to select the four sets of data is stratified sampling.
The characteristic of the population are homogenous within each group, but
heterogenous among the groups.

6. For each set of data, obtain the descriptive statistics using Microsoft Excel. Then,

summarise the measures of central tendency and measures of variation in the

following table.

Set of Data Measures of central Measures of variation

tendency

Mean : 6.1 Range : 7

Group 1 for n < 30 Median : 6 Variance : 4.7667

Mode : 4 Standard deviation : 2.1833

Midrange : 6.5 Coefficent of variation : 35.79%

Mean : 5.8286 Range : 7

Group 1 for n > 30 Median : 6 Variance : 2.1462

Mode : 5 Standard deviation : 1.4650

Midrange : 6.5 Coefficent of variation : 25.13%

Mean : 7 Range : 6

Group 2 for n < 30 Median : 7 Variance : 2.8571

Mode : 6 Standard deviation : 1.6903

Midrange : 7 Coefficent of variation : 24.15%

Mean : 6.55 Range : 6

Group 2 for n > 30 Median : 6.5 Variance : 1.6897

Mode : 7 Standard deviation : 1.2999

Midrange : 7 Coefficent of variation : 19.85%

7. Compare and comment the measures of central tendency and measures of variation

between groups.

8. Do different sample sizes affect the conclusion of the study by comparing its
measures of central tendency and measures of variation? Justify your answer.
