The poem opens with the vocative " O , " repeated twice in the second
line. This triple exclamation imposes the ecstatic mode (here suggesting
at first adoration); it prepares indeed the word "extase" which, verbless
and accompanied by only an exclamation point, appears at the beginning
of the third line much like a fourth vocative interjection. The passivity
(or implied submissiveness) of the ecstatic mood is further stressed by
the rather rare word "nonchaloir" denoting indolence, and the reference
to the "sleeping" memories.
Yet the first stanza simultaneously proposes a clear volitive strand.
The first signal comes in the third line: the intentional preposition
"pour," followed by the infinitive "peupler" (the verb itself suggests an
active multiplication and, more specifically, procreation or even crea-
tion), announces the unambiguous volitional statement of the first stanza's
closing line: "Je la veux agiter" ("I want to wave it"). These signals of
intentionality, implying movement as well as a project, are further in-
tensified by semantic elements suggestive of departure: "moutonnant"
refers to the hair, but by indirection also to the waves of the sea; this
double image is further developed or modulated by the preposition of
spatiality "jusque," the adjective "chargé" (implying the load or cargo
of a vessel), the waving of the handkerchief associated with leave-taking
and—perhaps most important—the very first substantive of the poem,
"toison" (fleece), referring to the hair, but immediately also, by means
of the allusion to the mythological fleece, to the notion of an exotic
voyage, of a quest.
These dual strands of passivity and intentionality become part of a
larger network in the rest of the poem. The ecstatic and indolent strains
of the opening stanza are echoed by the opening note of the next stanza
(the adjective "langoureuse"), picked up by the nonactive "presque
défunt" of line 7, continued by the more ambiguous "voguent" of line
9, and brought to a full evocation of passivity by the "infinis bercements"
and the "féconde paresse" o f the fifth stanza. On the other hand, the
semantic field is equally rich in volitional elements. "J'irai là-bas" ("I
shall g o there") : the decisive future of line 11, applied to the elsewhere,
obviously echoes the " J e la veux" of the first stanza. This desiderative
note is further strengthened by the imperative in line 13 ("soyez"),
related in turn to the verb of movement "enlève" (though this verb also
implies the passivity of the passenger being carried away). The begin-
ning of stanza V repeats the attack of stanza III: "Je plongerai" ("I shall
dive")—another future of intentionality, itself echoed by the "saura"
of line 24, as well as by the verb "retrouver" denoting a search. In the
