CFM Overview
■ CFM is a Joint effort of:
■ IEEE P802.1ag Connectivity Fault Management
■ ITU-T Recommendation Y.1731
■ MEF-17 Service OAM Requirements & Framework
■ CFM purpose
■ “Bridges are increasingly used in networks operated by multiple independent
organizations, each with restricted management access to each other’s
equipment. This standard will provide capabilities for detecting, verifying and
isolating connectivity failures in such networks”
■ CFM Functionality
■ CC – Continuity Check , Multicast unidirectional heartbeat
■ - Use: Fault Detection
■ Loopback - Unicast bi-directional request/response like IP ping
■ - Use: Fault detection, verification
■ Link Trace - Multicast request/unicast responses like IP traceroute
■ Use: Fault Isolation

Performance Management Y.1731
■ Real time applications are sensitive to packet loss, delay and jitter
The operator should have the option of measuring these real time
attributes
■ Supporting of measuring the real time application attributes will
improve the service provides visibility on the application status -
SLA measurements support
■ The attributes which will be measured and displayed:
■ Frame Delay (FD)
■ Frame Delay Variation (FDV)
■ Frame Loss Ratio (FLR)
■ Standard compliance with
■ ITU-T Y.1731
■ MEF Service OAM Performance Monitoring
■ Monitor granularity: Per service/VSI
■ Frequency supported 100msec/1sec/10sec
■ Attributes will be delivered every 15min and stored for 24H

Hierarchical CoS (HrCoS) Concept
■ HrCoS provide the option to commit the total user traffic – called
level 1 and in addition to guarantee the different flows called
level2
■ Business customer/BTS is pipe towards the network is limited to
specific BW
■ Internally in the pipe we provide strict priority between the different
CoS - High CoS traffic will get higher priority than low CoS
Guarantee specific

Timing synchronization methods
■ GPS
■ Provide accurate frequency and Phase TOD (Time of Day)
■ Require GPS receiver (Outdoor Antenna)
■ Depends on GPS availability
■ SyncE
■ Method derived from SDH/Sonet synchronization enables
Frequency synchronization
■ IEEE1588 - Precision Time Protocol
■ Enables the accurate distribution of time and frequency
over a packet network
■ NTP
■ Network Time Protocol
