Land Rover LR3 – 4.

Thermostat Replacement
“D.I.Y.“
Symptoms
Engine operating temp is slow to rise or fails to rise.

Possible OBD-II code P0128. Coolant Thermostat (Coolant


Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)
(Thermostat not closing properly)

Engine exceeding operating temp.


(Thermostat not opening properly)
Tools and Parts Used:
Pliers
Ratchet
13mm Socket
Standard Flat Screwdriver
Multi-bit Screwdriver
T25 Torx bit
Seal Puller
Funnel
Catch Pan (Clean)
Replacement Thermostat
Thermostat O-ring
Replacement Procedure.
Remove engine cover

1.Loosen (4) bolts


holding cover. Use
empty tip of multi-
bit screwdriver.
2. Remove oil filler
cap.
3. Lift cover from
mounted position.
4. Replace oil filler cap
Remove Skid Plate
5. Use Ratchet and
13mm Socket to
remove (4) bolts
holding plate.
6. May require
loosening additional
bolts from adjacent
plate in order to
remove or replace.
7. Pull Plate forward to
remove.
8. Place Catch Pan
under truck.
Drain Coolant
9. Using pliers
squeeze hose
clamp and slide
down hose to
release.
10. Pull hose free from
oil cooler.
11. Let coolant drain.
12. Reinstall coolant
hose and clamp.
Remove Thermostat
13. Release clamps
and pull (3) coolant
hoses free.
14. Remove (3) T25
screws holding
thermostat
housing.
15. Pull thermostat
housing up to
release and
remove.
Replace Thermostat In Housing
16. Push down and
twist retainer wings
of thermostat to
release. This is a
little tricky. Failure

17. Reassemble in the


same manner. Note
order of thermostat
and spring
assembly.
Reinstall Thermostat
18. Remove and fit new O-
ring into engine side of
housing.
19. Reinstall thermostat
housing and secure O-ring
with (3) Torx screws.
These should be hand
snug. Do not over
tighten.
20. Reattach (3) coolant
hoses.
Replace Coolant
21. Pour coolant from catch
pan into coolant tank. It
will not hold all of it until
engine is warm.
22. Replace coolant cap and
start engine
23. Bleed air from coolant tank
with bleed screw. Do not
over tighten screw. Repeat
as required. Excess air
can cause engine to Air
overheat.
24. Add additional coolant as
engine warms and
thermostat opens.
Button It Up
25. Replace the engine
cover (4) screws.
26. Replace the lower skid
plate (4) bolts. Check
for coolant leaks.
27. Clear any codes. Will
do this after a few
cycles on it’s own.
28. “Drive it like you stole
it.”
