On December 5, 2010, at 1758 mountain standard time, a Cessna T210M, N77CF, collided with a power
pole about one-half mile short of the approach end of runway 03 at Ogden-Hinckley Airport, Ogden,
Utah. After colliding with the pole, the airplane made contact with trees and two homes. The
instrument rated private pilot, who was the sole occupant, received serious injuries, and the
airplane, which was owned and operated by CK Aviation LLC, sustained substantial damage during the
accident sequence and ensuing fire. The 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight
reportedly departed General Stout Airport, Hurricane, Utah, about 75 minutes prior to the accident.
The pilot filed and activated an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flight plan while airborne near
Tooele, Utah. At the time of the accident, the airplane was being operated in Instrument
Meteorological Conditions(IMC).
After activating his IFR flight plan, the pilot was cleared from VERNE intersection direct to Ogden
Airport, and as he approached the airport he was given vectors to the Instrument Landing System
(ILS) approach to runway 03. After being cleared for the approach, the pilot was handed off to
Ogden Tower, which cleared him to land, and issued Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS)
Uniform. Information Uniform indicated one-quarter mile visibility, haze, 400 feet overcast, and
winds from 320 at 04 knots. The pilot acknowledged the landing clearance, which was the last
transmission the tower received.
A special aviation weather surface observation (METAR), which was taken at 1758, indicated winds
from 320 at 06 knots, one-half statute mile visibility, haze, broken clouds at 100 feet, broken
clouds at 4,800 feet, an overcast at 8,000 feet, a temperature of 01 degree Celsius, a dew point of
01 degree Celsius, and an altimeter setting of 30.22 inches of Mercury. Emergency personnel who
responded to the crash site reported that at ground level there was a thick fog with a visibility
that they estimated to be less than one-quarter mile.
