Photography Basics

I have a journal that I kept when I started to learn photography. The pages are scribbled with notes and
diagrams made while I was trying to grasp the basic functions of my camera. The camera manual could’ve
been written in Greek for all I knew. I remember wishing for a condensed easy to understand version to
help me like Cliff’s Notes did when I had to read Shakespeare in the 12th grade.
Well, my wish was granted a few years too late, but nevertheless, I found some pretty cool cheat sheets
(officially titled, “Infographics”) full of the information I wish I knew all condensed in one place.
The first one (it’s kind of long so keep scrolling…), created by Photography Degree, first appeared on The
Phoblographer.
Your Flash Modes and When To Use Them by Digital Camera World
For more, remember that Google is a beginning photographers best friend. Just look for the terms,
“Infographic” or “Cheatsheets.” Don’t put in “Cliff’s Notes” though, you might end up with a succinct
version of “Macbeth.”

For beginning photographers who are looking for some more in depth tips, techniques, and
overall help, I’d recommen taking a look at https://www.photographytalk.com/beginner-
photography-tips which has a fairly comprehensive library of articles targeted at beginner
photographers.

Yup, the graph is incorrect for the aperture, as well as the spelling. Nice idea, just needs to
be proofed. Little hole, big DOF. Big hole, Little DOF.

“Aperature”?
Credibility just left the building. It’s a basic photography term, as well as a simple English
word. Spell check.

At the dire risk of self-promotion, I literally just wrote an article of the ten things I wish I
knew when I was a beginner photographer. Some of them are covered in the infographics
above, some are added.

Am i the only one seeing a couple of issues with these? Namely at the end of the first one
(In Summation) section which seems to indicate that a wide open aperture gives you
‘greater’ depth of field??? and a smaller aperture opening gives you shallow DOF??? It’s
not the only error but its certainly the one that caught my eye.
