Dear Class,

For our first GSLC program, I give you the instruction as follows :

First of all, please Read carefully and understanding the topic of intercultural communication at
session 9-10 and the book of Larry A. Samovar and Richard E. Porter - Communication between
cultures, then do the following assessment :

1. Watch the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1blCOV3Lug

2. Take a note and describe the main ideas of the video, then make a summary
- Shows the concept of time in each country is different, like in Germany, Iran, France,
China, Amrican and India have the value of their own in every implement of time. It is
also influenced by the existing culture of their respective countries.
3. Why the concept of time becomes very important in the process of intercultural
communication. Explain your thought!
- time becomes important in the communication process, especially intercultural
communication, every culture has a different concept of time. in some cultures, to
communicate very strict in the use of time. such as the American people have a concept
time is money. For Americans, time is considered as a valuable commodity to make
money, so they can not be careless. on the contrary, does not show the seriousness of the
Indonesian people in the use of time, Indonesia is often heard people say about the delay,
"I'm sorry I came a little late" (when the delay is more than 30 minutes). This example
shows that the perception of time is rooted in the culture in which the individual resides.
4. From the video, how about implementation of time concept that occurs in some countries and
what the difference. Please elaborate in details.
- In france if you late to the restaurant don’t expect the warm welcome, the french take
their food very seriously, in consided of lateness as a sign of disrespect.
- In india time can seen pretty cheap, heve everything else maybe late butwhen you need
to be hurry something can be happen. Like a new suit, when u need a new suit and u had
to be reception in the following afternoon then u can get it exactly at the afternoon. Jika
di india waktu bagi masyarakat india dianggap remeh.
5. Based on your opinion, What problems can you anticipate when you are communicating with
someone who holds a different time orientation?
