What/Why Civil Engineering?
What is a civil engineer? Most people know that civil engineers design and build
infrastructures we have today. However, their work is not as simple as designing and
building structures and public services for the benefit of the people. Civil engineers have
a significant role in the life of every human being, but their importance is not sensed in
our daily routines by most of the people. They make our lives so much easier by
providing us public services such as shelter, transportation, water, electricity, and
infrastructures. They have a say in what the world will look like, make a lasting and
positive changes and improvements in the society, improve and make the quality of life
for the people and the environment that surrounds them.
The function of civil engineers starts from the simplest things we do, may it be
personal, outdoor, or indoor. They are much involved in our daily lives for even as
simple as taking a bath associates them. Driving in the network of roads going to one
point to another is part of their associated services. Even the structures we see around
the cities involve civil engineers, as well as the benefits of electricity we use are
available to us because of their contribution in the construction of towers for the
transmission lines. Therefore, civil engineers have big contribution to our lives, the
society, and the environment.

For different changes and improvements to occur in the society, there are
subdisciplines under civil engineering. These are structural engineering, construction
engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, hydraulic
engineering, and geotechnical engineering. They have different contributions in the
society, and it is possible that one does not know what the others are discussing
regarding a certain project. First, structural engineering provides the structural design
and analysis of buildings. They consider the strength, stability, and stiffness of the
structures and identify the kinds of load that act on structures. Next, construction
engineering oversees the planning and execution of the designs from transportation,
structural, environmental, hydraulic, and geotechnical engineers. In business, they
review and draft contracts, evaluate logistical operations, and monitor prices. Third,
environmental engineering which treats chemical, biological, and thermal wastes. Under
this engineering are water purification, wastewater and solid waste treatment, and
hazardous waste management. On the other hand, transportation engineering focuses
on designing, constructing, and maintaining transportation infrastructures such as
streets, highways, railways, airports, and ports. Next, hydraulic engineering deals with
the collection and management of water, and oversees the design of the pipelines,
drainages, canals, and water supply network. Lastly, geotechnical engineering focuses
on economical foundations, and is
based on the knowledge geology, material mechanics, and such. They may have
different focuses and knowledge, but each one of them contributes to the betterment of
our lives, the society, and the environment.
Many people ask me why I chose BSCE as my course when in fact most people who
take this course are men. I do believe that women can also be engineers. One reason
that made me choose this course is to prove other people wrong. I want to show them
that women can also make a change in the society as we work as engineers. Other than
that, I chose this course because of the influence of my relatives. However, most of my
relatives are mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and chemical engineers,
making me the only one in the family who chose civil engineering. In all honesty, I did
not want to take up civil engineering because I know that it is a hard course; however,
after watching videos and seeing the improvements around me, I have decided to take
BSCE. At first, one of the reasons why I chose this course is the good pay I would
receive when I work, but as days past, I come to think that working as a civil engineer is
not all about thee money. It is about the changes and improvements one makes in the
society, environment, and the lives of the people around. I chose this course to be able
to help people at the same time live my dreams. I want to turn my dreams into reality,
wherein my plans and designs are executed into something real. Civil engineering is
about making things happen, and that is what I want in life. I want to create things that
would help the people and make a difference in the society and environment. I was
quite unsure about it at first, but as I see the infrastructures, the roads, and other public
services that civil engineers have provided us, I have come to realize that I want to be
like them in the future. They have made my life easier, and that is want I want to do for
other people. I believe that being a civil engineer is not only about accomplishing one’s
dreams, but it is also about rendering service to the people and the society.
