→ Check the oil level regularly.
→ The oil level must not fall below the Minimum marking or rise above the Maximum marking.
Information
It is sufficient to read off the engine-oil level in the instrument cluster as described in the Driver's Manual
when the specified conditions are met.
Test conditions:
Wait a few minutes after stopping the engine to allow the oil to flow back into the oil pan.
The oil dipstick on the Cayenne, model year 2008-2009, is also suitable as an alternative method of
checking the engine-oil level.
Test procedure:
1. Pull out oil dipstick and wipe it off with a clean, lint-free cloth. Push dipstick back in fully, pull it
out again and read off the oil level → Markings on the oil dipstick . Correct engine-oil level if
necessary.
1. 1 - Max. marking
2. 2 - Min. marking
3. a - Above cross-hatched area up to Max. marking: no more oil needs to be added.
4. b - Oil level within cross-hatched area: additional engine oil can be added.
5. c - Area from Min. marking to cross-hatched area: refill engine oil up to the cross-hatched
area.

Requirements for oil level measurement using the PIWIS Tester:
6. Start the engine and let it run until an engine oil temperature of 90° C is reached.
Rev the engine if necessary to heat the engine oil to the specified temperature.
7. The oil level measurement process starts automatically as soon as the engine oil temperature
of 90° C is reached.

Information
If vehicles have fault entries relating to oil pressure, oil pump activation, oil pressure monitoring, etc. in
the DME control unit (and a warning light comes "on" on the instrument cluster), proceed as follows:
Do not replace components, such as the oil pump, oil pressure sensor or oil pressure control valve
if you suspect that they are faulty .
If the vehicle has not been driven for a long time (months), the control mechanism in the oil pump can
become stiff ("stick").
Very short trips and a lot of loading/maneuvering can cause t↓he oil to become very diluted => Oil
pressure very low. For example, 20 cold starts in quick succession can reduce the viscosity of the
engine oil by 30%.
If error messages/warnings are displayed again, proceed in accordance with the instructions
under Guided Fault Finding in the PIWIS Tester .

Information
If cold or excessively low-tempered components are sealed to each other by applying sealant, leaks can
occur because of condensed water forming or components distorting. Components must be uniformly at
least → Temperature: 17°C .
Information
The tightening specifications for the basic engine are stored centrally (→ 1001IN TIGHTENING
TORQUES, TIGHTENING SEQUENCES, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEWS ).
Tightening torques and assembly instructions for other assemblies (e.g. chassis, electrics, transmission

1. Clean sealing surfaces on the oil guide housing and crankcase. The sealing surfaces must be
dry and free of grease.
2. Apply liquid sealant to the oil guide housing. Apply Doboseal 224N sealant using the hand-held
cartridge. The contour of the bead of sealant must be as shown in the figure shown below. The
sealing bead should be approx. 1.0 mm wide and high. Ensure that the bead of sealant is
continuous and that there are no gaps. → Applying sealant to oil guide housing

3. Insert a new sealing ring into the ring groove on the lower part of the crankcase and bond it
with a very small amount of grease.
Information
When installing the oil guide housing, make sure that it is perfectly aligned and that there is no
dirt or dust between the components. Fit the oil guide housing straight. The maximum offset
must be less than 0.1 mm and it must not project over the crankcase. Otherwise, leaks can
occur while driving.
4. Place the oil guide housing on the crankcase and push evenly against the transmission bell
housing.
5. Screw in a fastening screw on each corner of the oil guide housing and tighten screws by
hand.
Information
1. If the transmission or engine is removed, the oil guide housing must be aligned using a
dial gauge .
6. Then screw in all screws by hand. While doing this, push the oil guide housing towards the
transmission. Also fit the two transmission screws and tighten hand-tight.
7. Starting at the transmission flange and proceeding forwards, tighten the screws evenly and in

0.1 mm and it must not project over the crankcase. Otherwise, leaks can occur while driving.
Information
The following work steps are only necessary if the transmission is disconnected at the time the oil
guide housing is being installed .
Place the oil guide housing on the crankcase and fit a fastening screw on each corner.
1. Insert the dial gauge into the universal dial gauge bracket and position it so that the dial gauge
has a preload of about 1 mm.

2. Set dial gauge scale to 0. To do this, place the dial gauge bracket on a completely flat surface
(e.g. crankcase flange) and turn the dial gauge scale until the pointer is at 0.
Fig 2: Adjusting Dial Gauge

3. Measure the offset. In order to do this, push with the bracket starting from the crankcase flange
towards the oil guide housing flange (the foot of the dial gauge bracket is located on the other
component like the dial gauge probe) and measure the offset. The oil guide housing must not
be set back any more than 0.1 mm. Even the slightest projection must be corrected.
