A multinational corporation (MNC), also called a transnational
corporation (TNC), or multinational enterprise (MNE),[1] is a corporation
or an enterprise that manages production or delivers services in more than one country. It can also be referred to as an international corporation. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has defined[citation needed] an MNC as a corporation that has its management headquarters in one country, known as the home country, and operates in several other countries, known as host countries. The Dutch East India Company was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock.[2] It was also arguably the world's first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies.[3] The first modern multinational corporation is generally thought to be the East India Company.[4] Many corporations have offices, branches or manufacturing plants in different countries from where their original and main headquarters is located.

I can’t imagine this condition will last for very long, however; either Wal-Mart or Bill will fall out of first place. Last year, 2006, in fact, Wal-Mart was the #2 largest company. And there are reports that Bill Gates is being displaced as the richest person in the world this year by Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Helu. It is also interesting to note that the top 10 is dominated by oil. Either oil/gasoline producers or gasoline consumers (automobile) make up 9 of the top 10. However, as CNNMoney says, “Big Oil might dominate the top ten, but money dominates the top 25. Ten of those are financial services firms.” Retail banking is also a large component. While these revenue numbers of the top corporations in the world may seem staggering, they are a reflection of the international nature of business today. In order to get truly big, you must be global as a company, and strongly global. Without having the world as a market, a company’s growth and size will be restricted. The USA is still outpowering all countries in this measure of economic might. Companies based in the USA still make up 5 of top 10 companies, and 162 of the 500 largest companies. However, countries like China are starting to show excellent improvement. The diverse international representation in the top 500 corporations will only continue to increase.
