An abrasion is a superficial damage to the upper layer of the skin, the epidermis. It may
cause slight bleeding. In general, abrasions do not leave a scar but deep abrasions could
cause tissue scarring. Usually, abrasion injuries happen as a result of skin coming in
contact (as in scraping) with a rough surface.
Treating an abrasion
Cleaning the wound and keeping it infection-free is very important. The common norm to
treat an abrasion is to clean the wound using mild soap and water and further with the
help of an antiseptic wash. This is followed by covering the wound using an antibiotic
ointment and a dry dressing. This is thought to help the skin in healing itself.
Cleaning an abrasion
While a serious or deeper-than-normal abrasion needs to be cleaned and treated by a
physician, mild scraping of skin can be easily handled by oneself. Cleaning an abrasion is
the foremost step towards avoiding infection and speeding up healing. Any dirt or debris
needs to be carefully removed. You may use water or any antiseptic solution to do the
same. If required you can use a piece of clean gauze to gently scrub the area clean
thoroughly. Dress the wound using sterile gauze, cotton and an antibiotic cream or
powder. This dressing needs to be changed often, daily at least to quicken the healing
process.
The affected area can be disinfected using thyme tea or with a cup of water containing 3-
5 drops of the essential oil.
Home made salves and ointments made with tea tree, calendula and comfrey are effective
in treating abrasions.
Acne treament (naturally at home or otherwise) is the most sough after treatment among
the younger generation. Acne is a common and chronic skin disease. It is an
inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles. The lesions are usually
found on the skin of the face, neck, chest and shoulders. Nearly six out of ten young
people between the ages of twelve and twenty-four suffer from some degree of acne. The
disease causes a great deal of embarrassment at an age when people tend to be sensitive
about their personal appearance.
Acne can be caused due to wrong eating habits and chronic constipation
All types of acne have their origin in wrong eating habits. Irregular hours of eating,
excessive starch consumption, too much of sugar, fried and fatty foods are also common
causes of acne. Chronic constipation is another cause of acne vulgaris. If the bowels do
not move properly, the waste matter is not eliminated as quickly as it should be and the
bloodstream becomes surcharged with toxic matter. The extra efforts of the skin to
eliminate excess waste result in acne and other forms of skin diseases.
Acne is also caused due to a devitalised condition of the skin which is a result of
unhygienic living habits, excessive consumption of tea, coffee, alcohol or tobacco, and
sedentary habits, which lead to indigestion and general debility.
Acne diet
All-fruit Acne diet
To begin with, the patient should take only an 'all-fruit' diet for a week, taking three
meals a day, of fresh juicy fruits, such as apples, pears, grapes, grapefruit, pineapples,
and peaches. Only unsweetened lemon or plain water, either hot or cold, should be drunk
and nothing else.
Warm-water enema
During the initial one week 'all-fruit' diet, a warm-water enema should be taken daily to
cleanse the bowels. Hot fomentation should be applied locally to open up the pores and to
bring out the waste matter. The affected parts should then be rinsed with cold water.
Alcoholism is a chronic disorder in which a person is unable to refrain from frequent and
excessive consumption of alcohol.
Vomiting, delirium
Vomiting, delirium, impaired judgment, and disturbed sleep are some of the other
symptoms that alcoholics suffer from. Excessive drinking damages the liver and
gradually leads to cirrhosis. It also leads to disorders of the stomach and bowels. It can
cause damage to the brain cells, and also affects the heart, which becomes weak and
flabby.
Causes of Alcoholism
Occasional drink
Alcoholism starts with the individual taking an occasional drink. This gradually becomes
a habit and leads to a state where the person cannot do without alcohol. Some people
drink alcohol to enliven social gatherings under social pressure; for others, it is an escape
from the responsibilities or stresses of life.
Alcoholism Treatment
Avoid smoking
Smoking must be avoided as it increases the desire for alcohol.
Allergies
The word 'allergy' means an altered or abnormal tissue reaction after exposure to an
antigen (also called an 'allergen'). The allergic reaction occurs if the body tissues are
sensitive to the allergen. The allergen may reach the tissues by direct contact with the
skin or various mucous membranes of the organs or through the bloodstream after
absorption. Almost any part of the body can be affected by allergies. Allergic reactions
are caused by a wide range of substances and conditions. These include pollens, dust,
cosmetics, and animal hair; poisonous plants, serums, vaccines, and drugs; physical
agents such as heat, cold and sunlight, as well as a variety of foods. The foods that
commonly cause allergic reactions are oranges, milk, eggs, wheat, fish and other sea
foods, chocolates, tomatoes, and strawberries.

Yogasanas
Yogic asanas like yogamudra, ardh-matsyendrasana, sarvangasana, shavasana, and
anuloma-viloma pranayama are beneficial in the treatment of allergy.
Alzheimer
Exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease is not yet known. Many factors contribute to
Alzheimer’s disease. Age is considered to be the major factor. Scientists are not clear
whether this disease is hereditary or not. People with high blood pressure, smoking habit
and high cholesterol levels are at high risk of this disease. A head injury long back or
Down’s syndrome also increases the chances of Alzheimer’s disease.
Ginkgo biloba is the mainly prescribed medicine for most neurological disorders. It has
antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which protects brain cells from damage.
Phosphatidylserine, Huperzine A and Vinpocetine are some other herbal remedies for
Alzheimer’s disease.
Amnesia refers to partial or complete loss of memory. Different types and degrees of
amnesia occur in old age and in some mental disorders.
Amnesia symptoms
The most common form of this disease is verbal amnesia. In this condition, the patient
forgets words or names. An uncommon form of amnesia is temporary loss of memory, in
which a person even forgets his own identity, including his name, age, family
background, and any recollection of the past.
Causes of Amnesia
The diet of a patient suffering from amnesia should consist of phosphorus-rich foods like
cereals, pulses, nuts, egg yolk, fruit juices, and milk. Cow's milk is specially beneficial
and the patient should take as much of this milk as he can safely digest.

After the juice fast, the patient may adopt an all-fruit diet for a further five days, taking
three meals a day of juicy fruits, such as apples, pears, grapes, grape-fruit, oranges,
pineapple, peaches, and melons, at five-hourly intervals.
Warm-water enema
During the first three to five days of the juice fast, the bowels should be cleansed with a
warm-water enema each day. The poisonous matter will thus be eliminated by this self
cleansing process.
Ice bag application on stomach
The application of an ice-bag over the stomach for half an hour before meals, and a cool
hip bath once or twice daily, will go a long way in curing anorexia.
The appendix is a small outgrowth of tissue forming a tube-shaped sac attached to the
lower end of the large intestine. Inflammation of the appendix presents itself in acute and
chronic forms and affects both the sexes equally. This disease accounts for about half the
acute abdominal emergencies occurring between the ages of ten and thirty.

Avoid constipation
In other words, the patient of appendicitis should adopt all measures to eradicate
constipation. Once the waste matter in the caecum has moved into the colon and is then
eliminated, the irritation and inflammation in the appendix will subside and surgical
removal of the appendix may not be necessary.
Arteriosclerosis
Arteriosclerosis refers to the thickening of the walls of the arteries. It has become a
common ailment in modem times, accounting for much of the disability and high death
rate, more so among older people. Arteriosclerosis is usually preceded by atherosclerosis,
a kind of fatty infiltration in the inner lining of the blood vessel walls. The most risky
places for such degeneration are the coronary vessels of the heart and the arteries of the
brain. Arteriosclerosis results in the loss of elasticity of the blood vessels and a narrowing
of the smaller arteries, which interferes with the free circulation of the blood.
Arteriosclerosis symptoms
Causes of Arteriosclerosis
Heredity
Heredity also plays its role and this disease runs in families.
Arteriosclerosis diet
Warm-water enema
During the juice fast undertaken for the first five to seven days, a warm-water enema
should be used daily to cleanse the bowels.
Avoid smoking
Smoking, if habitual, should be given up as it constricts the arteries and aggravates the
condition.
The word 'arthritis' means 'inflammation of the joints'. It is derived from two Greek
words: athron, meaning joints; and itis, meaning inflammation. It is, generally, a chronic
disease process. Arthritis occurs in various forms, the most frequent being osteoarthritis
and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which usually
occurs in the older age-group. Rheumatoid arthritis is a serious disease which affects not
only the joints of the fingers, wrists, hips, knees, and feet, but also the muscles, tendons
and other tissues of the body.
Arthritis symptoms
Cause of Arthritis
Heredity
Hereditary factors may also be responsible for the onset of this disease.
Arthritis diet
The diet of an arthritis patient should be planned so as to produce alkalinity in the blood.
It should include fruits and vegetables in the form of salads, and, at least, two cooked
vegetables. In severe cases, it would be advisable to put the patient on raw vegetable
juice therapy three times a day, for about a week. Repeated juice fasts are recommended
at intervals of every two months.
Sea bathing
Sea bathing has been found valuable in arthritis. The natural iodine in sea water is said to
relieve arthritis pain. As is well known, Iodine regulates the acid-alkaline balance in the
blood and tissues, helps to repair and regenerate worn out tissues and nourishes the
skeletal structure. It enters into the thyroid gland's secretion. The hormone uses the iodine
to cleanse the internal toxins. If sea bathing is not possible, the patient should relax for
thirty minutes every night in a tub of warm water, in which a cup of common salt has
been mixed. The minerals in the salt, especially Iodine, will be absorbed through the pores
of the skin. This will help correct an internal imbalance.

Athletes foot is a fungal infection on the foot, caused by fungus called dermatophytes.
These fungi live on dead cells of the skin. Medical term for athlete’s foot is Tines pedis.
This infection occurs mainly between the toe fingers. It is a contagious skin infection.
Prepare a solution of water and white vinegar – one part of white vinegar to four part of
water; soak your feet for 20 to 30 minutes twice day. Sprinkle some baking soda between
your toe fingers and rinse your feet after fifteen minutes. It is as effective as an expensive
antifungal powder. Rub tea tree oil between your toe fingers, it has antifungal properties.
For immediate relief from itching or burning, soak your feet in an antiseptic mouthwash
like Listerine. Corn starch is effective in soaking moisture, so keep your toe fingers dry
by sprinkling some corn starch on them
Avoid eating baked products and products that have high yeast content in them. Avoid
alcohol, sugar, cola drinks and grains. Eat a healthy and a balanced diet, avoid processed
foods. Your diet must include fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Avoid fried and
greasy food. Garlic has a good antifungal property, eat raw garlic or include it in your
diet.
Always keep your feet dry. Use hair dryer to dry your feet rather than towels. Use some
antiperspirant to keep your toe fingers dry. Use antifungal powder rather than antifungal
cream. Use cotton socks. Clean your shoes from inside using a paper or a cotton cloth.
Use only natural fiber footwear. Use mild soaps and avoid deodorant soap.
Obesity
Obesity is a physical condition that results from excessive storage of fat in the body.
Obesity has been defined as a weight more than 20% above what is considered normal as
per the body mass index, which is calculated from an individual's age, height, and weight.
Presence of fat tissue is essential as natural energy reserve in our bodies. But excess fat
tissues result in obesity and causes health disorders.
Obesity is measured by: Body Mass index (BMI), Waist Measurement and Combined
Measurements .An obese person carries the increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes,
hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Obesity Symptoms
In obesity, there is an increase in the size and the number of fat cells throughout the body.
This causes a buildup of excess body fat.
One of the places where this excess body fat can most easily be seen is around the
waistline. A waist measurement of 40 inches or more in men and 35 inches or more in
women is linked to an increased risk for heart disease and other health problems
associated with obesity.
Obesity Causes
Overeating and Other Causes
Obesity may develop from a combination of factors. One key cause is over-eating as the
intake of calories (the energy value of food) exceeds the requirements of the body over a
long period of time. This excess energy is stored in the body cells in the form of fat and
sugar and gives the individual the outward appearance of being overweight
Other key factors include: Genetic or hereditary traits including social, behavioral,
cultural, and physiological factors, metabolic (the body's process of using energy) factors;
and some medications that may contribute to the development of Obesity.
Here is a list of causes that are relevant in our times and important factors one must be
wary of to avoid obesity:
- Inactive or Sedentary lifestyle
- A high glycemic diet. Such as a diet that consists of meals that give high postprandial
blood sugar
- Weight cycling, caused by repeated attempts to lose weight by dieting
- Underlying illness such as hypothyroidism
- Genetic disorders
- Eating disorders such as binge eating disorder
- Stressful mentality
- Insufficient sleep
- Certain medications such as atypical antipsychotics
- Smoking cessation
- Genetic factors
Obesity Diet
Do’s
- Increase the quantity of fruits and vegetables and low calorie foods.
- Eat tomato in the morning and in salad. Make it a regular habit.
- Mint is very beneficial in losing weight. Have some salads, vegetables with it.
- Have raw or cooked cabbage as it inhibits the conversion of sugar and other
carbohydrates into fat.
- Include a source of vitamin B-12 in your diet.
- Use vegetable oil instead of butter or stick margarine.
- Prefer eating steam, boiled, microwave vegetables
- Eat less salty foods, alcohol, dairy products, sugar, margarine
- Replace whole milk with skim or low fat milk for your preparation
- Roast, bake or boil meat, fish, to destroy all the fat present
Don’ts
- Avoid intake of too much salt as it may be a factor for increasing body weight.
- All kinds of milk products-cheese, butter, and non-vegetarian foods should be avoided
as they are rich in fat. Be sufficient with twice a glass of milk.
- Avoid rice and potato, which contain a lot of carbohydrates. Among cereals wheat is
good.
- Avoid high calorie foods like chocolates, ice cream, sweets, butter, heavy refined foods
which have high calories.
- Avoid meals when under stress or tension.
- Stop taking bread prepared with wheat alone as the key ingredient. An ideal mixture
must consist of whole grams flour and soyabeans.
Do not skip any meal
Eat three regular meals a day. Avoid skipping any meal.
Walking is the best exercise to begin with. Other exercises include swimming, bicycling,
trekking and so on.
Some of the symptoms of vomiting are as follows Increased saliva, Dizziness, Light-
headedness, Difficulty in swallowing food or liquid, Changes in skin temperature,
Increase in heart beat rate.
Some of the causes of vomiting are as follows Overeating, Drinking excessive alcohol,
Pregnancy, Migraine, Infections, Flu, Stomach upset, Stomach virus, Food poisoning,
Poisoning, Accidental poisoning, Acute gastritis, Reflux, Intestinal obstructions, Chronic
digestive conditions, Peptic ulcers, Stomach cancer, Intestinal obstruction, Kidney
failure, Cholera.
Important Note : My grandma used to have regular bouts of vomiting and stomach ache
and used to be bed ridden. Atlast her Gall Bladder was found to be infected and removed.
Also stones were found in her Gall Bladder. So if vomiting doesnt stop for the above
suggested remedy and diet, you have to rush to a doctor for accurate diagnosis.
Bedwetting
Bedwetting Symptoms
- Child is at least 6 or 7 years old and has never been able to stay dry overnight.
Bedwetting Causes
Causes
Bedwetting in children may be due to immature nervous system due to which the child is
not able to feel that his bladder is full.
- Sometimes it is also because of small bladder due to which the bladder is not able to
hold all the urine produced during the night.
- In a very rare case it may be due to some defects in the urinary system.
- Some medical conditions like urinary tract infection, constipation, diabetes, sickle-cell
anemia, or epilepsy may also cause bedwetting.
- Genetic factors.
- Deep Sleep.
Bedwetting Remedies
Natural Remedies
-One hour before going to bed take six to eight oz. of cranberry juice.
- Bedwetting can also be treated using herbs like causticum, lycopodium, ursi, corn silk
and pulsatilla.
-Before going to bed eat two tsp walnut halves and one tsp raisins.
- Drink herbal tea made from herbs like oak bark, horsetail, wormwood or bearberry.
- Massage inner thigh of the patient with St. John’s wort oil.
- Retention control training - Practice retention control by postponing urination during the
day, first by a few minutes and then by gradually increased amounts of time. This
exercise will help strengthen the muscles that control urination and also increase the
capacity of the bladder.
- Avoid taking liquids before bedtime and make sure you empty the bladder before hitting
the sack.
Healthy Diet
Eat parsley and cinnamon bark. Eat fresh and natural foods like leafy vegetables, brown
rice and so on. To prevent bedwetting due to constipation eat a fiber rich diet. Eat diet
rich in silica, magnesium and calcium. Some of the rich sources of these nutrients are
milk, banana, sesame, and almonds. Avoid juices of fruits like apple, orange, grapes and
pineapple. Avoid sweets, fruits, chocolates, meat and artificial additives. Foods like corn,
soy, wheat, dairy products, tomatoes and eggs cause allergy. It is better to avoid such
allergy causing foods. Avoid all processed and prepackaged foods.
Alternative options
Each time the patient feels like urinating he must hold it for few seconds. This will
stretch the bladder and the patient will be able to hold it for longer time. Do not drink any
thing just before going to bed.
Eczema
Eczema also called as dermatitis, is a group of skin disorders. Atopic eczema, allergic
contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, infantile seborrhoeic eczema, adult
seborrhoeic eczema, varicose eczema and discoid eczema are different types of eczema.
Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. It mainly occurs among infants
and small children. In more than 90% of cases, eczema is found to occur in children
below 5 years of age. It is a non contagious disease.
Following are the symptoms of eczema. Itching, Redness on skin, Dry and flaky skin,
Itchy blisters, Inflammation on skin, Small bumps on forehead, neck and cheek, Rough
and thickened skin. Symptoms of eczema are more severe on the folds.
Cause of eczema depends upon the type of eczema the person is suffering from. Eczema
is considered to be hereditary. Studies reveal that a person is prone to eczema if his
family has a history of closely linked conditions like hay fever and asthma. Eczema could
be aggravated by irritants like smoke, chemicals, detergents, solvents and so on. Even
weather conditions could aggravate the condition. Excessive stress, heat and emotional
stress also aggravates the symptoms of eczema. Sometimes blood circulation problem in
the leg can also cause eczema. Deficiency of vitamin B6 causes eczema.
Apply a mixture of 1 teaspoon camphor and 1 teaspoon sandalwood paste on the rashes.
Apply nutmeg paste to the affected areas. Put natural vitamin E on the affected skin, it
will relieve you of itching. Zinc taken orally and applied directly on the affected skin is
effective. Both shark cartilage and lotion of blueberry leaves reduce inflammation. Use
pine tar soap to wash the affected skin. Drink tomato juice daily, it will cure the
symptoms in a few days.
Diet never causes eczema. Food only causes allergy, it does not cause eczema. It is the
genes of a person that cause eczema. If you are allergic or sensitive to certain foods then
try avoiding them, because they can trigger eczema. Dairy products, eggs, nuts,
preservatives and citrus fruits are more likely to trigger eczema.
Suggestions for Eczema
Always avoid substances you are allergic to. Wear cotton clothes as they do not irritate
your itchy skin. Exposure to water for a long time can lead to skin dryness. Use good
quality moisturizer.
Insomnia
The term insomnia literally denotes a complete lack of sleep. It is, however, used to
indicate a relative inability to sleep that consists of difficulty in falling asleep, difficulty
in remaining asleep, early final awakening, or combinations of these complaints. This
disease has assumed alarming proportions in the present times, specially among the upper
classes in the urban set-up.
Insomnia Symptoms
The single symptom that most frequently marks the onset of insomnia is difficulty in
falling asleep. There may he changes in the duration and quality of sleep, persistent
changes in sleep patterns, lapses of memory, and lack of concentration during the day.
Other symptoms are emotional instability, loss of coordination and confusion.

Sleeping Pills
Long-term studies on the effects of sleeping pills don’t show encouraging results. In fact
the one major conclusion from all studies is that insomniacs are better off without
sleeping pills than they are with them. One study alone that surveyed over 2,000,000
people, found that chronic use of sleeping pills are as deadly as cigarette smoking.
The case against sleeping pills is compelling. The following information points out some
important reasons why sleeping pills should not be considered.
• Those who use sleeping pills have significantly higher mortality rates than those
who do not
• Sleeping pills (& even the newer generations) do little or nothing to improve
chronic insomnia and cause long-term chemical dependency
• Sleeping pills reduce brain cell activity during the day, affecting short-term
memory as well as causing a hangover effect
• Sleeping pills accentuate the GABA neurotransmitter, which keeps the nerve cells
in the lung tissue from firing. This is why an overdose of sleeping pills will cause
asphyxiation and over 1000 overdose related deaths each year
• GABA actuation is also responsible for impaired physical ability. Each year,
thousands of traffic deaths, accidents and falls (especially in the elderly) are
attributed to sleeping pills
• Sleep Apnea Patients should never take sleeping pills. Sleeping pills increase the
pauses and length of pause in breathing. Someone with sleep apnea could suffer
brain or ocular damage from the lack of oxygen or even death
• Anyone over the age of 40 should be cautioned against sleeping pills, and anyone
over the age of 65 should never take sleeping pills. Studies show that almost all
people over 40 have some symptoms of sleep apnea, and anyone over 65 would
be clinically diagnosed with sleep apnea
• Sleeping pills create a hypnotic dependency similar to alcohol and lower
inhibitions and fear of pain or consequences. This is one reason why sleeping pills
contribute to accidents and why chronic sleeping pill users are less likely to worry
or take care of themselves
• Sleeping pills are highly addictive. Sleeping pills are similar to barbiturates and
are extremely difficult to stop using
• Although sleeping pills do not improve daytime functioning, people still prefer
taking them because of the barbiturate feel-good effect they produce. As with
many addictive drugs, they may not be helpful, but we feel good when we take
them
Unfortunately sleeping pills do the same things to us during the day that we want them to
at night. That is they impair our consciousness, judgment, memory and intelligence.
Ironically, insomniacs think sleeping pills make them sleep better, when they actually
make them feel worse. This is because of the misperception that sleeping pills are
supposed to help us sleep better. In comparison studies against placebo, patients receiving
placebo did better than those with sleeping pills, although those with the sleeping pills
erroneously believed they were doing better.
Perhaps the most shocking condemnation of sleeping pills is that they do not improve
daytime function or performance. Since the definition for ‘Quality of Sleep’ is that
amount which allows us to operate at optimum levels of energy, sleeping pills are not the
answer. Pharmaceutical companies concentrate on reducing the side effects of sleeping
pills, not on improving daytime performance. Those who take these pills however, are
misguided into believing they will receive a daytime benefit. The chance is very high that
they will end up becoming chronic sleeping pill users. New commercials for sleeping
pills now caution that, “Almost everyone has some risk of becoming dependant on sleep
medication.”
While defending the use of sleeping pills, pharmaceutical companies counter that most of
the people who use sleeping pills take them for a few weeks or less. What they don’t say,
however is that the vast majority of all prescriptions are repeat prescriptions to chronic
insomniacs.
Millions of people are hooked on sleeping tablets, which are wrecking their health.
Experts warn that the drugs can be extremely dangerous to people with certain medical
conditions, such as psychosis, breathing problems and heart disease.
But even for those with no medical health problems, sleeping tablets can be dangerous
and highly addictive.
Users can get hooked within just two weeks of starting to take the pills, which many
people are taking unnecessarily.
MIND has now launched a booklet to warn of the dangers of sleeping pills.
Called "Sleeping Pills - Curse or Cure for insomnia?" it considers the drawbacks of the
pills; the alternatives and the dangers of weaning yourself off them.
Withdrawal severe
MIND warn that withdrawal symptoms can be severe, ranging from trembling and the
shakes to hallucinations, paranoia and epileptic fits.
Anyone who has taken sleeping tablets for more than a few nights should not try
withdrawal without the help of their GP.
MIND said that sleeping tablets would not tackle the underlying reasons for depression,
and encourage people to look at changing their lifestyle to see if that can combat the
problems first.
They advise people to avoid drinking tea, coffee and alcohol before they go to bed; not
eating too late in the day; taking sufficient exercise and not reading or watching TV in
bed, as this can encourage you to stay awake.
Mental health
A spokeswoman for MIND said that they are extremely worried about the effect that
sleeping tablets are having on mental health.
She said that there are about 16 million prescriptions of the most common sort of drugs,
despite guidelines issued to GPs in 1988 warning that the drugs are highly addictive.
"You can become dependent on the tablets within just two weeks. Your body very
quickly becomes tolerant to them and they don't treat the underlying causes of your sleep
problem.
"The number of people taking them are too high, despite the guidelines to GPs," she said.
Backache
Backache is one of the most common ailments prevalent today. Sedentary living habits,
hazardous work patterns and psychological conditions associated with emotional stress,
which bring about spasm of the muscles, cause backaches. As the back bears the weight
of the entire body, overweight persons feel the strain on the back when they have to carry
an extra load.
Causes of Backache
You can minimize problems with back pain with exercises that make the muscles in your
back, stomach, hips and thighs strong and flexible. Some people keep in good physical
condition by being active in recreational activities like running, walking, bike riding, and
swimming. In addition to these conditioning activities, there are specific exercises that
are directed toward strengthening and stretching your back, stomach, hip and thigh
muscles.
Before beginning any exercise program, you should discuss the program with your doctor
and follow the doctor's advice. It is important to exercise regularly, every other day.
Before exercising you should warm up with slow, rhythmic exercises; if you haven't
exercised in some time, you can warm up by walking. Inhale deeply before each
repetition of an exercise and exhale when performing each repetition.
Stand with your back against a wall and feet shoulder-width apart. Slide down into a
crouch with knees bent to about 90 degrees. Count to five and slide back up the wall.
Repeat 5 times.
Lie on your back with your arms at your sides. Lift one leg off the floor. Hold your leg up
for a count of 10 and return it to the floor. Do the same with the other leg. Repeat five
times with each leg. If that is too difficult, keep one knee bent and the foot flat on the
ground while raising the leg.
You can also sit upright in a chair with legs straight and extended at an angle to the floor.
Lift one leg waist high. Slowly return your leg to the floor. Do the same with the other
leg. Repeat five times with each leg.
Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on your bed or floor. Raise your
knees toward your chest. Place both hands under your knees and gently pull your knees
as close to your chest as possible. Do not raise your head. Do not straighten your legs as
you lower them. Start with five repetitions, several times a day.
Stand with your feet slightly apart. Place your hands in the small of your back. Keep your
knees straight. Bend backwards at the waist as far as possible and hold the position for
one or two seconds.
Heel Slides - Lie on your back. Slowly bend and straighten knee.
Repeat 10 times.
Abdominal Contraction - Lie on your back with knees bent and hands resting below
ribs. Tighten abdominal muscles to squeeze ribs down toward back.Be sure not to hold
breath. Hold 5 seconds. Relax. Repeat 10 times.
Wall Squats - Stand with back leaning against wall. Walk feet 12 inches in front of body.
Keep abdominal muscles tight while slowly bending both knees 45 degrees. Hold 5
seconds. Slowly return to upright position. Repeat 10 times.
Heel Raises - Stand with weight even on both feet. Slowly raise heels up and down.
Repeat 10 times.
Straight Leg Raises - Lie on your back with one leg straight and one knee bent. Tighten
abdominal muscles to stabilize low back. Slowly lift leg straight up about 6 to 12 inches
and hold 1 to 5 seconds. Lower leg slowly. Repeat 10 times.
Intermediate Exercise Program
Single Knee to Chest Stretch - Lie on your back with both knees bent.
Holdthigh behind knee and bring one knee up to chest. Hold 20 seconds.
Relax.Repeat 5 times on each side.
Hamstring Stretch - Lie on your back with legs bent. Hold one thigh behind knee.
Slowly straighten knee until a stretch is felt in back of thigh. Hold 20 seconds. Relax.
Repeat 5 times on each side.
Lumbar Stabilization Exercises With Swiss Ball - Abdominal muscles must remain
contracted during each exercise. See "Abdominal Contraction" exercise from initial
exercise program. Perform each exercise for 60 seconds. The further the ball is from your
body, the harder the exercise.
Lie on your back with knees bent and calves resting on ball.
1. Slowly raise arm over head and lower arm, alternating right and left sides.
2. Slowly straighten one knee and relax, alternating right and left sides.
3. Slowly straighten one knee and raise opposite arm over head.Alternate
opposite arms and legs.
4. Slowly "walk" ball forward and backward with legs.
Sitting on ball with hips and knees bent 90 degrees and feet
resting on floor.
1. Slowly raise arm over head and lower arm, alternating right and left sides.
2. Slowly raise and lower heel, alternating right and left sides.
3. Slowly raise one heel and raise opposite arm over head. Alternate opposite
arm and heel.
4. Marching: Slowly raise one foot 2 inches from floor, alternating right
and left sides.
Hip Flexor Stretch - Lie on your back near edge of bed, holding knees to chest. Slowly
lower one leg down, keeping knee bent, until a stretch is felt
across top of the hip/thigh. Hold 20 seconds. Relax. Repeat 5 times on each side.
Piriformis Stretch - Lie on back with both knees bent. Cross one leg on top of the other.
Pull opposite knee to chest until a stretch is felt in the buttock/hip area. Hold 20 seconds.
Relax. Repeat 5 times each side.
Aerobic Exercises - Maintain spine in neutral position while stabilizing with abdominal
muscles to protect the low back during aerobic exercise. 1. Stationary bike for 20 to 30
minutes. 2. Treadmill for 20 to 30 minutes.
Body odor
Body odor is one of the unpleasant things that we don’t expect. Body odor is affected by
what sweat glands emit. If body odor is very unpleasant it may affect your social life.
Being nervous or anxious could be a symptom of body odor. Heavy sweating due to
strenuous physical exercise should tell you that you are going to smell badly. You may
feel the unpleasant odor yourself.
Body odor may be due to serious illness. Body odor may be due to kidney disease, fungal
infections liver disease and so on If you take some strong medicines then the smell of
those medicines may be present in your body odor. Diabetic patients may smell of
acetone because of insulin that they take. If you drink alcohol, smoke cigarette or cigar
you will have an unpleasant body odor. Body odor may also be due to zinc deficiency,
cavities, toxins and so on. It is often related with sweating of the body, but the unpleasant
odor is mainly due to bacteria present in the sweat. The major non-food reason for body
odor due to sweating is the sweat glands under the arms and in the groin area. Poor
hygiene is the most common reason for body odor.
If your body odor is caused due to any medicine that you are on, then you need to talk to
your doctor. Use antibacterial soap or deodorant soap to combat body odor due to
sweating. Wear cotton clothes during summer so that the sweat is soaked up. Instead of
using deodorant, wipe your sweat producing areas like armpit using white vinegar or
alcohol. Avoid using antiperspirant because they clog sweat glands, use alum instead.
Apple cider vinegar can be used to combat under arm odor. Use baby powder to keep
areas of heavy perspiration dry. Apply some baking soda on arm pit, it will absorb sweat
and kill bacteria. Soak yourself for 15 minutes in bath water with couple of cups of
tomato juice in it.
There is a direct relation between what a person eats and his body odor. Avoid refined
sugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils and other processed foods. Avoid red meat because
it releases many toxins into the blood stream. Avoid foods that lack fiber. Eat a healthy
diet which contains whole grains, lots of leafy vegetables, sprouts, fresh fruits, soy
products, raw nuts and so on. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, cumin and garlic.
Suggestion for Body Odor
Body rash or skin rash is usually an inflammation on the skin. Eruptions on the skin of
the back are called Back Rash. There is a change in color and texture on the affected area.
Skin or body rash could be the result of irritation, disease or an allergic reaction.
Allergies could be to food, plants, chemicals, animals, insects or other environmental
factors. This kind of skin rash could affect the entire body or be area specific. Though not
all body rashes are contagious, some could be.
Little, red itchy or non-itchy bumps on the skin. Stinging or burning sensation on the
affected area.
Skin rash could occur as a result of a variety of reasons. Some of the common ones are -
- Allergy to dyes and chemicals in clothing.
- Chemicals present in elastic, latex and rubber products.
- As a reaction to cosmetics, perfumes, soaps and detergents.
Aloe Vera gel, cod liver oil and Vitamin E oil are also helpful in combating body rash.
Using baking powder on the affected area is another suggestion to deal with body and
back rash.
A poultice made from dandelion, yellow dock root and chaparral helps alleviate skin
rash.
Another remedy is to soak a cloth in comfrey tea or calcium water.
Calcium Water preparation – Stir in a spoonful of calcium gluconate powder into a cup of
water.
Boils are localized, tender, inflamed, pus-filled swellings in the skin surrounded by large
red areas. They are infections of the hair follicles of the skin. They are quite painful,
particularly in areas where the skin is closely attached to the underlying tissues, such as
the nose, ears, or fingers. They usually occur in teenagers and young adults. The common
sites for boils are the face, neck, buttocks, and thighs.
Causes of Boils
Staphylococcus germs
Boils are caused mainly by staphylococcus germs which enter the sweat glands or hair
follicles. The essential cause of this disorder is thus bacterial. However, several factors
predispose the growth of bacteria in hair follicles.
Well-balanced diet
After the short juice fast or the all-fruit diet, as the case may be, the patient should adopt
a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on wholegrain cereals, raw vegetables, and fresh
fruits. Further periods of a juice fast or an all-fruit diet may be necessary, depending on
the general health level and bodily condition of the patient.
Warm-water enema
A warm-water enema should be given daily during the initial juice fast or all-fruit diet.
This will help to cleanse the bowels.
Avoid constipation
In case constipation is habitual, all measures should be taken to overcome it.

Bruises
Bruises are common skin injuries that cause temporary discoloration of the skin. Blood
gets collected at the affected area. This causes the discoloration. Bruises are also known
as Contusion or Ecchymosis.
Common symptoms
A fresh bruise is tender, painful and appears to be reddish in colour. After few hours it
changes to dark purple or blue colour. As it nears healing it will be of yellow or green
colour. Generally, there is no risk of infection in case of a bruise as with a scrape or cut.
This is because the skin is not broken and is not exposed to the environment.
Extreme strain
Heavy and rigorous exercise may cause bruises, which results from microscopic tears in
blood vessels underneath the skin.
Bleeding disorders
Bleeding disorders, could be one of the reasons for inexplicable bruises.
Freak accidents
Bumps (often unnoticed) cause bruises in areas such as the shin or thigh.
Ice pack
Apply ice pack to the bruise. This will reduce pain and inflammation. Please do not try
this remedy on broken skin.
Heating pads
A day after using ice packs, apply heating pads to the affected area, this will dilate blood
vessels and improve circulation.
Heinz vinegar
Apply Heinz vinegar to the bruise using a cotton ball. This will speed up the healing
process.
Raw egg
Break a raw egg and apply the content on the bruise.
Arnica benefits
Leaves of Arnica plant may be used in an ointment and can be applied to skin to treat
bruises.
Healthy vitamin C
Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamin C and iron. Foods rich in vitamin C are broccoli, sweet
potatoes, citrus fruits and cauliflower. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
Drink fluids
Drink plenty of fluids. Pure water, herbal teas, and soups are all good choices.
Ban Smoking
Avoid smoking since smoking may delay healing because it interferes with blood supply
and collagen metabolism.
Be more careful
Avoid accidental situations and places.
Be cool
Avoid activities that might increase swelling such as taking hot showers, using hot tubs,
hot packs, and drinking alcohol. During the first 48 hours, these things may actually
increase bruising and swelling
Bronchitis
Bronchitis refers to the inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the bronchial tubes
within the lungs. Bronchitis may be acute or chronic. In chronic cases, the disease is of
long duration and more serious.
Bronchitis Symptoms
Causes of Bronchitis
Smoking
An important cause of bronchitis is smoking. Excessive smoking irritates the bronchial
tubes and lowers their resistance, so that they become vulnerable to germs breathed in
from the atmosphere.
Weather changes
Changes in weather and environment hasten the onset of the disease.
Bronchitis diet
Yogic kriyas
He should also perform yogic kriyas (cleansing exercises) such as jalneti and
vamandhauti, and yogic asanas (body postures) such as ekpaduttanasana, yogamudra,
bhujangasana, shalabhasana, padmasana, and shavasana. Simple pranayamas (breath-
hoIding procedures) like kapalbhati, anuloma-viloma, ujjai, and bhramari will also be
beneficial.
Bone spur
Bone spur is an extra bone that grows on the normal bone. In medical jargon bone spur is
known as osteophytes. It occurs on the joints especially on the joints of the spine, feet,
shoulders, hips, hands and knees. Bone spur itself does not cause any pain but it can
cause pain when it rubs against other bones and nerves around it. Bone spur is quite
common among people above 60 years of age and is an indication of spine degeneration.
Back pain and neck pain are the most common symptoms of bone spur. Patients could
experience mild pain in the neck and the lower back while standing and walking. If bone
spur is developed in the cervical spine then the patient will experience pain in the
shoulders and headache in some cases. Patient will experience pain in thigh if bone spur
is developed in lumbar spine. Numbness, tingling, progressive weakness and pain in arms
and legs are some other symptoms of bone spur due to compression of the nerves.
First step for treating bone spur through home remedies is to reduce inflammation. Apply
an ice pack to the inflamed area 4 to 5 times in a day. This will help to reduce the
inflammation. If the problem is more severe then apply heating pad on the inflamed area.
Curcumin, the yellow pigment of turmeric is effective in treating bone spur. Take 500 to
1000 mg of curcumin 3 to 4 times a day on an empty stomach. Try this remedy daily for
about 6 weeks. To relieve pain, apply flaxseed hot pack to the affected area. Take
alternate hot and cold foot baths. Dip a piece of cheese cloth in warm linseed oil and keep
the cloth on the affected area. Cover the cloth with plastic and keep a heating pad on the
plastic for 2 hours.
Burning tongue
Some of the symptoms of burning tongue are as follows Dry mouth, Sore mouth, Thirst,
Burning sensation in mouth, lips, palate, gums and tongue, Loss of taste, Numbness on
the tip of the tongue, Metallic or bitter taste in the mouth.
Yeast infection of the mouth is the main reason for the cause of burning tongue. In
addition some of the reasons for the cause of burning tongue are hormonal imbalance
during menopause, bad oral habits, medications, acid reflux, nerve damage, endocrine
disorders, irritating dentures and deficiency of vitamin B12.
Smoking, if habitual, should be given up as it constricts the arteries and aggravates the
condition.
Virus
Chicken pox is caused by a virus.
Warm-water enema
A small warm-water enema should be administered daily during the initial juice fast to
cleanse the bowels.
Small ulcers that occur in the lining of the mouth are known as Canker sores. These are
often painful and sensitive. Canker sores are the most common causes of mouth sores.
They are also known as Aphthous Stomatitis. They cause discomfort while eating and
talking. They are not contagious and occur on the internal soft tissues of the mouth. They
can occur at any age and may reoccur once healed
Some of the symptoms of canker sores are as follows:- Painful sores on the movable parts
inside the mouth e.g. tongue, A sore may be small, red and may measure less than 10
mm, There could be a burning or tingling sensation before the sore appears, Once the
sores burst there may be a white or yellowish coating over it and a reddish color around
it. Apart from the ones mentioned above, other symptoms of canker sores could be
swollen lymph nodes, listlessness and fever
The actual cause of canker sores is not known till date. Some of the reasons believed to
cause canker sores are follows:- Immune system malfunction A minor injury caused by
eating rough foods like chips and nuts or by biting the inner portion of the mouth,
Menstrual period, Food allergies, Deficiency of nutrients like zinc, iron, folic acid and
vitamin B12, Heredity, Trauma, Bacterial infections, Gastrointestinal tract related
diseases, Hormonal disorders.
Some of the effective home remedies for canker sores are as follows:- Rinse your mouth
with aloe juice frequently, Put some alum on the canker sores. Repeat this twice a day. It
helps to relieve the pain and quickens healing. Apply some baking powder on the sores. It
could be used either in the powdered form or in the paste form. It will reduce the amount
of bacteria in the mouth, Rinse your mouth several times a day by a mouthwash prepared
by mixing one tsp. of baking soda in half cup of warm water, Prepare a mouthwash by
putting 5 to 6 drops of Grapefruit seed extract in a glass of water. Rinse your mouth with
this at least once in a day. It is an excellent disinfectant, Prepare a mouthwash using three
parts of water and one part of hydrogen peroxide. Use this mouthwash twice a day, Onion
is another excellent home remedy for canker sores. Apply some raw onions to the sores,
Rinse your mouth with plum juice. If the sore is too bad then apply the juice on the sore
using a cotton ball, Eat fresh papaya fruit or chew fresh papaya leaves. If fresh papaya
leaves or papaya fruits are not available then you can also use papaya tablets, Gargle your
mouth with a solution made by mixing 1 tsp soda and 1 pinch of salt in a cup of warm
water, Apply tea tree oil to the sores, Rinse your mouth three to four times a day with a
solution made by mixing 2 tbsp. salt to 6 ounces of warm water, Apply some powdered
Goldenseal powder to the sore or rinse your mouth with a mouthwash prepared by mixing
½ tsp Goldenseal powder to ¼ tsp salt and 1 cup of warm water.
Diet for Canker sores
Eat foods rich in vitamin B. Foods like whole grain and green leafy vegetables are good
sources of vitamin B. Eat easily digestible foods, well cooked soft grains and light
cooked vegetables. Eat yogurt daily. Active acidophilus in yogurt helps to heal and
prevent the outbreak of canker sores. Avoid foods like coffee, citrus fruits and spices, as
they may irritate your mouth. Spicy and acidic foods increase the pain; it is advisable to
avoid them. Avoid hard foods like chips, wafers and nuts. Avoid diary products, salty
foods, sweet foods, oily foods, and animal protein.
Do not eat and chew simultaneously. Brush your teeth regularly after meals. Application
of ice eases the pain caused by Canker sores.
Cataract
Cataract is a common eye disease. A cataract refers to an area of the lens of a person's
eye that has become whitish and opaque instead of remaining clear. The result is that the
person cannot see clearly. The crystalline lens, through which light travels into the
interior of the eye, is situated just behind the iris or coloured portion of the eye. In
cataract, this lens becomes opaque, hence, seriously hampering the entrance of light into
the eye. Blindness ensues when no light rays can permeate the opacity of the lens.
Cataract Symptoms
Causes of Cataract
Cataract diet
Warm-water enema
A warm-water enema should be given daily during the juice fast.
Do eye exercises
Eye exercises aimed at relaxing and strengthening of the eyes are also valuable in
cataract.
Eye Exercises
The yoga practitioners attach special importance to eye exercises, for two reasons.
Firstly, a lot of eye problems in later life are due to a loss of tone in the eye muscles.
These muscles become rigid, and this loss of elasticity reduces the ability of the lens of
the eye to focus at different distances. It also causes the eyesight to become weaker.
These exercises tone the eye muscles up and keep them elastic. If you already have eye
problems when you begin these exercises, you will find your eyesight improving after a
few months.
Secondly, any eye tension present will tend to produce a general feeling of tension, due to
the eye's connection to the brain via the optic nerve. What happens is that eye tension
produces an increase in the nerve impulses in the eye muscles. This increase in nerve
impulses travels along the optic nerve and bombards the brain, causing a general feeling
of tension and anxiety. The eye exercises will reduce tension in the eye muscles, as well
as reduce general tension.
It is best to do these eye exercises while lying down after you've finished the asanas. This
way you're resting after the asanas and doing the eye exercises at the same time, thus
reducing the time taken to do your yoga routine.
When doing the eye exercises keep your eyes open and don't move your head.
Sitting (as in the exercises for the neck given above), open your eyes, then check on your
posture. Is your spine erect? Hands on the knees? Body relaxed? Head straight? That is
how you should always remain while doing eye exercises. The whole body must be
motionless; nothing must move except the eyes.
Raise your eyes and find a small point that you can see clearly without straining, without
frowning, without becoming tense and, of course, without moving your head. While
doing this exercise look at this point each time you raise your eyes.
Next, lower your eyes to find a small point on the floor which you can see clearly when
glancing down. Look at it each time you lower your eyes. Breathing should be normal. In
other words, you don't have to do deep breathing.
Exercise 1
Move your eyes upwards as far as you can, and then downwards as far as you can. Repeat
four more times. Blink quickly a few times 1 to relax the eye muscles.
Exercise 2
Now do the same using points to your right and to your left, at eye level. Keep your
raised fingers or two pencils on each side as guides and adjust them so that you can see
them clearly when moving the eyes to the right and to the left, but without straining.
Keeping the fingers at eye level, and moving only the eyes, look to the right at your
chosen point, then to the left. Repeat four times. Blink several times, then close your eyes
and rest.
Exercise 3
Choose a point you can see from the right corner of your eyes when you raise them, and
another that you can see from the left corner of your eyes when you lower them, half
closing the lids. Remember to retain your original posture: spine erect, hands on knees,
head straight and motionless.
Look at your chosen point in right corner up, then to the one in left corner down. Repeat
four times. Blink several times. Close the eyes and rest.
Now do the same exercise in reverse. That is, first look to the left corner up, then to the
right corner down. Repeat four times. Blink several times. Close the eyes and rest.
Exercise 4
This exercise should not be done until three or four days after you have begun eye
exercises given here.
Slowly roll your eyes first clockwise, then counterclockwise as follows: Lower your eyes
and look at the floor, then slowly move the eyes to the left, higher and higher until you
see the ceiling. Now continue circling to the right, lower and lower down, until you see
the floor again. Do this slowly, making a full-vision circle. Blink, close your eyes and
rest. Then repeat the same action counterclockwise.
Do this five times then blink the eyes for at least five seconds.
When rolling the eyes, make as large a circle as possible, so that you feet a little strain as
you do the exercise. This stretches the eye muscles to the maximum extent, giving better
results.
Exercise 5
Next comes a changing-vision exercise. While doing it you alternately shift your vision
from close to distant points several times.
Take a pencil, or use your finger, and hold it under the tip of your nose. Then start
moving it away, without raising it, until you have fixed it at the closest possible distance
where you can see it clearly without any blur. Then raise your eyes a little, look straight
into the distance and there find a small point which you can also see very clearly.
Now look at the closer point-the pencil or your finger tip then shift to the farther point in
the distance. Repeat several times, blink, close your eyes and squeeze them tight.
Exercise 6
Close your eyes as tightly as you possibly can. Really squeeze the eyes, so the eye
muscles contract. Hold this contraction for three seconds, and then let go quickly.
This exercise causes a deep relaxation of the eye muscles, and is especially beneficial
after the slight strain caused by the eye exercises. Blink the eyes a few times.
Exercise 7
This exercise is called 'palming' and is very relaxing to the eyes. It is also most important
for preserving the eyesight. Palming also has a beneficial, relaxing effect on your nervous
system.
Remain seated on the floor. Draw up your knees, keeping your feet on the floor and
slightly apart. Now briskly rub your palms to charge them with electricity and place the
cupped palms over your closed eyes. The fingers of the right hand should be crossed over
the fingers of the left hand on the forehead. The elbows should rest on your raised knees
and the neck should be kept straight. Don't bend your head. Do the deep breathing while
palming your eyes.
If you are going to do the palming for longer than a few minutes, better sit down at a
table, place some books or pillows in front of you to support your elbows so that you will
be able to keep the neck straight, and palm the eyes in this position. If the palming is
done for only a short period one can do deep breathing for half a minute or so at first,
gradually increasing it every week.
Benefits:
This exercise helps to do away with eye strain, and tension. Your vision will get better
and clearer as the ophthalmic, or eye, nerves receive a richer supply of blood. Some
people use this to improve their vision.
Hours spent using computers, reading in poor light, bad posture, stress and tension can all
affect eyesight. Daily eye exercises can improve vision and may even prevent its
deterioration.
Palming - cup your hands over your closed eyes, with your elbows resting on a table.
Repeat two to three times a day for five minutes. The darkness and warmth of the palms
rests the eyes.
Splashing - splash your closed eyes 20 times with warm then cold water in the morning
and with cold then warm water in the evening. This improves circulation.
Focusing - hold one pencil 15cm (6in) in front of your face with one hand and another at
arm’s length with the other hand. Focus on one, blink, then focus on the other. Repeat
for a few minutes and practise twice a day to improve your focusing ability.
Swinging - stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and sway from side to side while
keeping your eyes fixed on a point in the distance in front of you. Repeat 50 times,
blinking left and right as you do. This relaxes the eyes and reduces strain.
Cholera
Cholera is one of the most severe diseases of the intestines. It is a serious infection
involving the lower part of the small bowel. It is a water-borne disease and is common
during the monsoon . The mortality rate for this disease has been quite high.

Cirrhosis of the liver is characterized by a significant loss of cells, so that the liver
gradually contracts in size and becomes hard and leathery.
Poor nutrition
Poor nutrition can be another causative factor in the development of cirrhosis and a
chronic alcoholic usually suffers from severe malnutrition.
Warm-water enema
The patient should be kept in bed. A warm-water enema should be used daily to cleanse
the bowels during the juice fast and thereafter, if necessary.
The term dandruff generally refers to the condition of the skin wherein shiny, silvery
scales separate from the scalp and collect amidst the hair. The condition can become
troublesome when the skin gets infected.
Dandruff Symptoms
Dandruff Causes
Well-balanced diet
After the all-fruit diet, the patient can gradually adopt a well-balanced diet, with
emphasis on raw foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Further short periods of an
all-fruit diet for three days or so may be necessary at monthly intervals till the skin's
condition improves.
Warm-water enema
During the first five days of the treatment when the patient takes an all-fruit diet, a warm-
water enema should be taken daily to cleanse the bowels. Simultaneously, an attempt
should be made to keep the body in good health.
Cold Sores
Cold sores, also called as fever blisters are caused by herpes simplex virus. Cold sores are
contagious. They are often mistaken for canker sores – a non contagious mouth ulcer.
Cold sores mainly occur on the skin adjacent to mouth, mostly on the lips. Sometimes
they may occur on chin, nostrils, fingers or genitals. Medical term for cold sores is
recurrent herpes labialis.
Generally signs and symptoms of cold sores are seen after twenty days of exposure to the
virus. Small, painful and fluid-filled red or brown blisters could be seen on the skin.
Blisters may burst and ooze. Tingling precedes blisters after one or two days. Once
infected by the virus you may experience head ache, irritability and fever. There may be
problem in swallowing any food stuff or liquid. Itching and swelling of lips are common.
Lymph nodes on the neck may swell. Drooling may be seen among small children.
Symptoms may last from seven to ten days.
Herpes virus that causes cold sores is of two types – HSV 1 and HSV 2. In most of the
cases HSV 1 is the cause. Generally HSV 1 causes oral herpes and HSV 2 causes genital
herpes, but not necessary, both can infect any area of the body. As these viruses are
contagious, cold sores can be caused by close contact like hugging and kissing with the
infected person. It may spread among children by playing with the infected child. It may
be that a person has recovered from cold sore and the symptoms are not visible but still
his saliva may contain virus. Some triggers like pregnancy, lips or gum injury, dental
treatment, cosmetic surgery, fatigue, stress, hormonal changes etc may cause cold sore to
reoccur.
Ice is a very good home remedy for cold sores. Rub ice on the infected skin for few
minutes, repeat this every hour. Apply a tea bag for few minutes on the blisters, repeat
this every hour. One can also consider pressing a warm tea bag on the blisters for
approximately 30 minutes. Applying Witch Hazel on sores will give you some relief. Dip
your moist index finger in powdered common salt and press the sore for 30 seconds using
this index finger. Gently rub aloe vera gel or oil on the sores. Lemon balm extract helps
to reduce symptoms and speeds up healing. Those having weak immune system will take
more time to recover and may face more severe consequences.
Fever refers to a condition of the body in which the temperature goes beyond the normal.
It is also characterized by disturbance in the normal functioning of the system. It is a
common ailment which occurs both in children and adults. The average temperature of a
healthy body ranges between 36.9 degree C and 37.5 degree C, or 98.4 Degree F and 99.5
Degree F. It is liable to marginal variations, depending on the intake of food, the amount
of exercise, and the temperature surrounding the atmosphere. The lowest temperature of
the body occurs between the hours of 1.30 a.m. to 7 a.m. and the highest between 4 p.m.
to 9 p.m.
As the fever rises, the pulse and respiration become faster. Finally, there is profuse
sweating, a copious flow of concentrated urine, and general relief of symptoms. The term
'fever' has a very wide application. It is the symptom of a body's fight against infection. It
is one of the most common features of several diseases. In many cases, it is a secondary
symptom of the disordered state of the body with which it is associated.
The real cause of all fevers, including common fever, however, is the accumulation of
morbid matter in the system due to wrong feeding habits and unhygienic conditions of
living. Fever is, thus, a natural attempt on the part of the body to rid itself of toxic matter.
Conjunctivitis Symptoms
Pus formation
In more serious cases, there is pus formation, which dries up during sleep, making the
lashes stick together.
Causes of Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis diet
Avoid starchy and sugary foods, refined cereals, strong tea ans coffee
The patient should avoid an excessive intake of starchy and sugary foods in the form of
white bread, refined cereals, potatoes, puddings, sugar, jams, confectionery, meats, fatty
foods, strong tea and coffee, too much salt, condiments, and sauces which cause a general
catarrhal condition as well as conjunctivitis.
Warm-water enema
Those taking a juice fast for the first three or four days of the treatment should take a
warm-water enema daily during the fast.
Constipation is a common disturbance of the digestive tract. In this condition, the bowels
do not move regularly, or are not completely emptied when they move. This condition is
the chief cause of many diseases as it produces toxins which find their way into the
bloodstream and are carried to all parts of the body. Appendicitis, rheumatism, arthritis,
high blood pressure, cataract., and cancer are only a few of the diseases in which chronic
constipation is an important predisposing factor.
Constipation Symptoms
Causes of Constipation

The air passages of the lungs are lined with cells secreting mucus, which normally traps
particles of dust. When the membranes get infected and inflamed, the secretion of mucus
increases and the lining of the air passages is irritated. Coughing is the action by which
excess mucus is driven out.
Symptoms of Cough
Causes of Cough
All-fruit diet
After the juice fast, the patient should adopt an all-fruit diet for two or three days. In case
of a mild cough, the patient can begin with an all-fruit diet for five to seven days, taking
three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits such as apples, pears, grapes, grape-fruit, oranges,
pineapples, peaches, and melons. For drinks, unsweetened lemon water, or cold or hot
plain water may be given.
Warm-water enema
While the cough is severe, a warm-water enema should be used daily to cleanse the
bowels.
Sinusitis
Sinusitis refers to an inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the paranasal sinuses.
It often follows a common cold, influenza, and other general infections. Infecting germs
sometimes find their way into sinuses or chambers on either side of the nasal passage,
leading to sinus trouble.
Sinusitis symptoms
The symptoms of sinusitis are excessive or constant sneezing ; a running nose; blockage
of one or both nostrils; headaches and pressure around the head, eyes, and face. Sinus
headaches are usually felt in the forehead and in the face just below the eyes. The patient
may suffer from low grade fever, lack of appetite, and difficulty in breathing
Sinusitis causes
Sinusitis results from the inflammation of the sinus passages and oversecretion of mucus
by the membranes lining the nose and throat
Well-balanced diet
After the fever subsides, he may adopt a low-calorie, raw fruit and vegetable diet with
plenty of raw juices. Once the acute symptoms are over, the patient may gradually
embark upon a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and
fruits. In persistent chronic conditions, repeated short juice fasts may be undertaken for a
week or so at intervals of two months
Malaria is one of the most widespread diseases in the world, especially in tropical and
subtropical regions.
Malaria symptoms
There are three main types of malaria, depending upon the parasites which cause it. They
are tertian fever, quartan fever and malignant tertian malaria. The most common
symptom of all types of malaria is high fever, which may occur every day, on alternate
days, or every fourth day. The fever is accompanied by chills, headache, shivering, and
pain in the limbs. The temperature comes down after some time with profuse sweating.
The main complications of malaria are anaemia, kidney failure, and dysentery.
Malaria causes
Malaria is caused by a tiny parasite called Plasmodium. The parasite grows in the liver of
a person for a few days and then enters the bloodstream where it invades the red blood
cells. The disease spreads from a sick person to a healthy one by the bite of an infected
female anopheles mosquito. She draws a small quantity of blood containing the parasites
when she bites a person who has malaria. These parasites then pass through several
stages of development within the mosquito's body, and finally find their way to its
salivary glands. There they lie in wait for an opportunity to enter the bloodstream of the
next person the mosquito bites. The malaria-carrying mosquito breeds in stagnant water.
According to naturopathy, however, the real causes of malaria are wrong feeding habits
and a faulty style of living, which result in the system being clogged with accumulated
systemic refuse and morbid matter. It is on this soil that the malaria germ breeds. The
liberal intake of flesh foods, tinned and other denatured foods, and alcoholic beverages
lowers the vitality of the system and paves the way for the development of malaria.
Grapefruit is one of the most effective home remedies for malaria. It should be taken
daily. It contains a natural quinine-like substance which can be extracted from the fruit by
boiling a quarter of a grapefruit and straining its pulp.
The seeds of the fever nut plant are another effective remedy for malaria. They can be
obtained from a herbal store and preserved in a phial for use when required. About six
grams of these seeds should be given with a cup of water two hours before the expected
onset of the paroxysm of fever, and a second dose should be given one hour after the
attack. The paroxysm can thus be avoided but even if it occurs, the same procedure
should be resorted to on that day and it will cut short the fever.
The leaves of the datura plant are useful in the tertian type of malarial fever. About two
and a half freshly-sprouted leaves of this plant should be made into a pill by rubbing them
with jaggery and administered two hours before the onset of the paroxysm.
The herb chirayata, botanically known as Swertia chirata, is also beneficial in the
treatment of intermittent malarial fevers. It helps in lowering the temperature. An
infusion of the herb, prepared by steeping 15 gm of chirayata in 250 ml of hot water with
aromatics like cloves and cinnamon, should be given in doses of 15 to 30 ml.
Lime and lemon are valuable in the quartan type of malarial fever. About three grams of
lime should be dissolved in about 60 ml of water and the juice of one lemon added to it.
This water should be taken before the onset of the fever.
Alum is also useful in malaria. It should be roasted over a hot plate and powdered. Half a
teaspoon should be taken about four hours before the expected attack and half a teaspoon
every two hours after it. This will give relief.
The leaves of holy basil are considered beneficial in the prevention of malaria. An
infusion of a few leaves can be taken daily for this purpose. The juice of about eleven
grams of leaves of holy basil mixed with three grams of powder of black pepper can be
taken beneficially in the cold stage of the malarial fever. This will check the severity of
the disease.
Malaria diet
Diet is of utmost importance in the treatment of malaria. To begin with, the patient
should fast on orange juice and water for a few days, depending on the severity of the
fever.
Fresh-fruit diet
After the fever has subsided, the patient should be placed on an exclusive fresh-fruit diet
for the first few days. Milk may then be added to the diet.
Thereafter, the patient may gradually embark upon a well-balanced diet of natural foods,
with emphasis on fresh fruits, and raw vegetables.
Warm-water enema
A warm-water enema should be administered daily during the juice and water fast to
cleanse the bowels.
The best way to reduce temperature naturally during the course of the fever is by means
of a cold pack, which can be applied to the whole body. This pack is made by wringing
out a sheet or any other large square piece of linen material in cold water, wrapping it
right round the body and legs of the patient (twice round would be best), and then
covering it completely with a small blanket or similar warm material. This pack should
be applied every three hours during the day while the temperature is high and kept on for
an hour or so. Hot-water bottles may be kept on the feet and against the sides of the body.
Corns
A corn refers to a localized thickening of the skin, especially on the toes, and extending
into subcutaneous tissue. A corn is usually small and painful.
Symptoms of corns
Corns are usually found over the joints of the toes and on the soles of the feet. They are
shaped like a pyramid with the apex pointing inwards. They are tender when touched.
Sometimes painful and infective warts that occur on the soles of the feet are mistaken for
corns
Causes of corns
Pressure on the toes and skin surfaces of the feet through incorrect footwear
Corns are usually formed as a result of pressure on the toes and skin surfaces of the feet
through incorrect footwear .
Dietaries of corns
A light nutritious diet containing vitamins and minerals in the form of fruits and
vegetables is recommended.
For proper treatment of a corn, it is essential to first stop wearing the shoes that caused it.
In most cases the corn will disappear when the pressure is removed.
Apply corncaps
Medicinal corn- removing plasters, known as corncaps, are easily available with
chemists. They are found to be effective.
For soft corns, which usually occur between the toes, the feet should be washed daily.
This should be followed by the application of a mild talcum powder.
Hiccups
Hiccups start from the diaphragm, a dome shaped muscle in the chest. Diaphragm’s
function is to pull and push air in and out of the lungs while inhaling and exhaling
respectively. Hiccups are caused when the diaphragm is irritated. Generally hiccups last
for a few minutes but sometimes they may last for days or weeks. This may be a sign of
some other medical problems in the body.
Some of the causes of hiccups are as follows. Overstretching the neck, Laryngitis,
Heartburn, Irritation of the eardrum, General anesthesia, Surgery, Bloating, Tumor,
Infection, Diabetes, Drinking excessive alcohol, Hot and spicy food, Smoking, Eating
fast.
Some of the home remedies for hiccups are as follows Hold your breath, Gargle with
water, Place an ice bag on the diaphragm for sometime, Sip ice water quickly, Close your
eyes and gently press your eye balls, Drink a glass of soda water quickly, Eat some sugar,
Eat one tbsp peanut butter,
There is no special diet recommended for hiccups. However, it is advisable to avoid hot
and spicy food because they can irritate the lining of the esophagus.

Mental strain, wrong food habits and improper blood and nerve supply
The three chief causes of myopia are mental strain, wrong food habits, and improper
blood and nerve supply. Mental strain puts a corresponding physical strain on the eyes,
and their muscles and nerves.
Natural, uncooked foods are the best diet for defective vision. These foods include fresh
fruits such as oranges, apples, grapes, peaches, plums, cherries; green vegetables like
lettuce, cabbage, spinach and turnip tops; root vegetables like potatoes, turnips, carrot,
onions, and beetroots; nuts, dried fruits, and dairy products. Cereals are also necessary,
but they should only be consumed sparingly. Genuine wholemeal bread is the best and
most suitable.
Sun Gazing
The subject should sit on a bench, facing the rising sun with his eyes closed, and gently
sway sideways several times for ten minutes. He should then open his eyes and blink
about ten times at the sun and look at some greenery.
Splashing
Plain cold water should be splashed several times over closed eyes. The closed lids
should then be rubbed briskly for a minute with a clean towel. This cools the eyes and
boosts blood supply.
Swinging
The subject should stand with his feet twelve inches apart, hands held loosely at his sides,
his whole body and mind relaxed. He should sway his body from side to side gently,
slowly, and steadily, with the heels rising alternately but not the rest of the foot. This
movement may be likened to the slow moving of the pendulum of a clock. Swinging
should be done in front of a window or a picture, so that the window or picture appears to
be moving in the opposite direction of the swing. When facing one end of the window or
object, the subject should blink once.
Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that prevents the body from utilizing
glucose completely or partially. It is characterized by raised glucose concentration in the
blood. The pancreas produce a hormone insulin which controls the amount of glucose in
the blood. Without insulin, the blood sugar increases as the body cannot use or store
glucose. The most commonly-used screening tests are the determination of the fasting
blood glucose level and the blood glucose level tested two hours after a meal. The normal
fasting blood sugar content is 80-120 mg per 100 ml of blood; this can go up to a level of
160 mg per 100 ml of blood two hours after meals. Anything above these levels can be
termed as diabetic levels. Diabetes is common among older, obese people.
Types of Diabetes:
Type 1 or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) occurs when the pancreas fails
to make enough insulin. It usually occurs in childhood or adolescence but can develop at
any age. These patients need insulin everyday.
Type 2 or non-insulin dependant diabetes mellitus occurs when body cells become
resistant to insulin. This is more common among adults, especially those who are
overweight and over age 40. These people are able to control their blood sugar levels
through weight control, regular exercise and a well-balanced diet. Some people require
oral medications or insulin injection to lower blood sugar.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Initial Symptoms
Increased thirst, increased urination, increased appetite are the initial symptoms.
Other Symptoms
Other possible symptoms are blurred vision, skin irritation or infection, weakness or loss
of strength, and decreased healing capacity.
Clinical lab test data reveal glycosuria (sugar in urine), hyperglycaemia, abnormal
glucose tolerance tests.
If diabetes is not diagnosed at the right time symptoms like fluid and electrolyte
imbalance, acidosis, coma is seen.
Causes of Diabetes
Cause for IDDM
IDDM mostly results from a virally initiated autoimmune destruction of beta cells of the
pancreas.
A mild diabetic can manage his disease with control on his diet alone. A severe diabetic
requires dietary control along with insulin. However, whatever the form of controlling
diabetes, regularity, routine and regulation should be strictly followed.
A diabetic should follow a low carbohydrates, low fat & moderate protein diet. The diet
should be high in complex carbohydrates ie. High fibre diet like vegetables, whole
legumes, whole wheat products, oats etc. Products made from refined wheat flours should
be restricted. Salads can be consumed in a any quantities but high fat salad dressings
should be avoided. Fruits can be taken as per recommended by your dietician, fruit juices
should be avoided and whenever possible fruit should be taken with the skin eg. Apple,
Pear etc. Preferably avoid fruits along with your meals and you can take it 2 hours after
or before a meal.
Each meal should contain some source of protein as it doesn’t increase the blood sugar
immediately
For eg. In breakfast you can consume oats porridge, which contains oats as well as milk.
Proteins should not be taken too much in excess as it may lead to renal problems.
A diabetic patient should worry about the fat content of his diet. Many foods have some
amount of invisible fats such as whole milk, egg yolk, and red meats.
Choose skimmed milk, egg whites, de-skinned chicken and use very little quantity of
visible fats like oil, Ghee, butter in your daily diet.
The main goal of nutrition for diabetics is to avoid highs & lows of blood sugar so you
can feel well today and in the future. So it is important to remember these 3 points.
1) The timing of your meals & snacks is very important. Eat meals & snacks at the same
time every day or as close to the same time as possible. Include a snack if you are
exercising or if your blood sugar gets low. If these are happening regularly then consult
your physician.
2) If you are taking insulin or a diabetic pill, always eat bed time snack. Stick to your
serving size. If you eat more then what you are required to may raise your blood sugar.
Depression Symptoms
Low body temperature, low blood pressure, hot flushes and shivering
Cases of severe depression may be characterised by low body temperature, low blood
pressure, hot flushes and shivering.
Causes of Depression
The excessive and indiscriminate use of drugs also leads to faulty assimilation of
vitamins and minerals by the body and ultimately causes depression.
Apple is one of the most valuable remedies for mental depression. The various chemical
substances present in this fruit such as vitamin B, phosphorus, and potassium help the
synthesis of glutamic acid, which controls the wear and tear of nerve cells. The fruit
should be taken with milk and honey. This remedy will act as a very effective nerve tonic
and recharge the nerves with new energy and life.
The root of asparagus has been found beneficial in the treatment of depression. It is
highly nutritious and is used as a herbal medicine for mental disorders. It is a good tonic
for the brain and nerves. One or two grams of the powder of the dry root of the plant can
be taken once daily.
The use of cardamom has proved valuable in depression. Powdered seeds should be
boiled in water and tea prepared in the usual way. A very pleasing aroma is added to the
tea, which can be used as a medicine in the treatment of this condition.
The herb lemon balm has been used successfully in the treatment of mental depression. It
alleviates brain fatigue, lifts the heart from depression, and raises the spirits. A cold
infusion of the balm taken freely is reputed to be excellent for its calming influence on
the nerves. About thirty grams of the herb should be placed in half a litre of cold water
and allowed to stand for twelve hours. The infusion should then be strained and taken in
small doses throughout the day.
Diet has a profound effect on the mental health of a person. Even a single nutritional
deficiency can cause depression in susceptible people. Nutritional therapy builds up brain
chemicals, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, that affect the mood and are often
lacking in depressed people. Eating foods rich in vitamin B, such as wholegrains, green
vegetables, eggs, and fish helps restore vitality and cheer in an individual.
The diet should be restricted to three meals. Fruits can be taken in the morning for
breakfast with milk and a handful of nuts or seeds. Lunch may consist of steamed
vegetables, wholewheat chapatis and a glass of buttermilk. For dinner, green vegetable
salad and all the available sprouts such as alfalfa seeds, moong beans, cottage cheese, or a
glass of buttermilk would be ideal.
A person suffering from depression can overcome it by being more active, turning away
from himself, and diverting his attention towards other people and things. The pleasure of
achieving something overcomes distress or misery.
Exercise
Exercise also plays an important role in the treatment of depression. It not only keeps the
body physically and mentally fit, but also provides recreation and mental relaxation. It is
nature's best tranquilliser. Exercise also tones up the body, provides a feeling of
accomplishment, and reduces the sense of helplessness.
The patient must also learn the art of relaxation and meditation which will go a long way
in curing depression. He must gain control over his nervous system and channelise his
mental and emotional energies into restful activities. This can be achieved by ensuring
sufficient rest and sleep under quiet conditions. Meditation will help create a balance in
the nervous system. This will enable the hormonal glands to return to a correct state of
hormonal balance and thereby overcome the feeling of depression.
Ringworm
Ringworm is one of the common skin diseases. The disease is caused by a fungus, a
minute form of vegetable plant life that grows on the skin. The disease is more annoying
than dangerous
Ringworm symptoms
The patches of ringworm on the body are usually round or oval, with raised pink and
scaly rings which show a clean space in the centre. The itching in the infected parts helps
to spread infection through the nails to other healthy part of the body. If it is not treated
for a long time, the infection becomes chronic and is then difficult to get rid of
Ringworm causes
Ringworm infection occurs in the scalp, the body, the feet, and the nails. Ringworm of
the scalp is common among children because of the lack of protective fatty acids in their
scalp. The disease spreads on the skin and extends deeper into the hair roots, and also up
along the hair. The affected hair becomes dull and breaks off near its root. This leaves
bald spots on the scalp
Ringworm is passed from an infected person to a healthy person by contact. It can also
spread by the use of articles such as the towel of an infected person
Ringworm diet
Well-balanced diet
The patient may, thereafter, gradually embark upon well-balanced diet with emphasis on
seeds, nuts, wholegrain cereals, raw or lightly cooked vegetables, and fresh fruits
Headache cures are the most sought after remedies as it is one of the most common
ailment people suffer from. Headaches afflict almost everyone at some time or the other.
Most headaches are functional, being caused by temporary upsets, and are not related to
any organic changes in the brain. They are often natures warning that something is wrong
somewhere in the body. The actual pain, however, arises from irritation to nerve endings
in the shoulder, neck, and scalp muscles, and also in the smooth muscles encircling the
blood vessels which severe these areas.
Causes of headache
The common causes of headaches are allergy, emotional stress, eye strain, high blood
pressure, a hangover, infection, low blood sugar, nutritional deficiency, tension, and the
presence of poisons and toxins in the body. Allergies are often the unsuspected cause of
headaches. The foods to which some people are allergic and which can trigger headaches
are milk and milk products, chocolate, chicken, liver, alcohol and strong cheese.
Sneezing and diarrhoea are further indications of an allergy.
The best way to prevent headaches is to build up physical resistance through proper
nutrition, physical exercise and positive thinking. As a first step, the patient should
undertake a short fast, and take citrus fruit juices diluted with water every two hours from
8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. daily. Thereafter, he should plan his diet in such a way as to put
the least possible strain on the digestion. Breakfast may consist of fruits, both fresh and
dried. Lunch may consist of protein foods. Starchy foods such as wholewheat bread,
cereals, rice, or potatoes should be taken at dinner along with raw salads. Spices,
condiments, sour buttermilk, and oily foodstuffs should be avoided. Drinking a glass of
water (warm water in winter and cool water in summer), mixed with a teaspoon of honey
first thing in the morning, is also a good remedy. Copious drinking of water throughout
the day is also advised.
Water treatment
Other helpful measures in the treatment of headaches are a cleansing enema with water
temperature at 37 degree C, a cold throat pack, frequent applications of towels wrung out
from very hot water to the back of the neck , a cold compress at 4.4 degree C to 15.6
degree C applied to the head and face, or an alternate spinal compress. Hot fomentations
over the abdominal region just before retiring relieve headaches caused by stomach and
liver upsets.
Yogasanas
Yogic kriyas like jalneti and kunjal; pranayamas like anulomaviloma, shitali and sitkari;
and asanas such as uttanpadasana, sarvangasana, paschimottanasana, halasana, and
shavasana are also beneficial in the treatment of headaches.
Migraine
Migraine Headache
Migraine headaches may result from a variety of causes such as low blood sugar, allergy
infection, excessive intake of certain drugs, a weak constitution low energy, nutritional
deficiency, consistent overwork, improper sleep and rest, excessive smoking, drinking,
and sexual indulgence.
Menstruation in women
Menstruation in women is also one of the important cause of migraine headache. This
form of migraine usually abates after menopause.
Migraine relief can be obtained from the juice of ripe grapes and is an effective home
remedy. It is said that King Jamshed of Persia, who was very fond of grapes, once stored
the juice of grapes well packed in bottles and made it public that the bottles contained
strong poison so as to prevent others from taking it. It so happened that the king\'s wife
was struck with migraine and having obtained no relief from any treatment, decided to
end her life by taking this so-called ‘poison’. She took it several times in small doses and
contrary to her expectations, it gave her great relief instead of killing her.
Niacin has proved helpful in relieving migraine pain. Valuable sources of this vitamin are
yeast, whole wheat, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, nuts, sunflower seeds, liver, and
fish. Vitamin I complex tablets containing 100 mg of niacin can be taken for the same
purpose.
An ancient folk remedy for relieving the pain of migraine is a cabbage leaf compress. A
few leaves of the vegetable should be crushed, and then placed in a cloth and bound on
the forehead at bedtime, or when convenient during the day. The Compress should be
renewed when the leaves dry out.
The crusts of lemon have also been found beneficial in the treatment of migraine. These
crusts should be included into a fine paste in a mortar. The paste should be applied, it
plaster on the forehead. It will provide great relief.
Carrot juice, in combination with spinach like, or beet and cucumber juices, has been
found beneficial in the treatment of migraine. In the first combination, 200 ml of spinach
juice may be mixed with 300 ml of carrot juice to prepare 500 ml or half a litre of the
combined juices. In the second combination, 100 ml each of beet and cucumber juices
may be mixed with 300 ml of carrot juice.
Migraine relief diet
Avoid foods like white flour products, sugar, tinned or preserved foods, etc
Foods which should be avoided are white flour products, sugar, confectionery, rich cakes,
pastries, sweets, refined cereals, greasy foods, tinned or preserved foods, pickles,
condiments, and sauces.
All-fruit diet
After the short juice fast, the patient may adopt an all-fruit diet for about five days, taking
three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits.
Kidney stones usually cause severe pain in their attempt to pass down the ureter on their
way to the bladder. The pain is first felt in the side and, therefter, in the groin and thighs.
Other symptoms, of kidney stones are a frequent desire to urinate, painful urination,
scanty urination, nausea, vomiting, sweating, and chills. The patient may also pass blood
with the urine.
The formation of stones in the kidneys is the result of defects in the general
metabolism. They usually occur when the urine becomes highly concentrated due to
heavy perspiration or insufficient intake of fluids. They are aggravated by a sedentary
life-style.
wrong diet, excess intake of acid-forming foods, white flour and sugar products
The other causes are a wrong diet, excess intake of acid-forming foods, white flour and
sugar products, meat, tea, coffee, condiments and spices, rich foods, and overeating.
Lack of vitamin A and an excessive intake of vitamin D may also lead to formation of
stones.
Avoid foods like alcoholic beverages; condiments and pickles; certain vegetables like
cucumber, radish.
A patient with kidney stones should avoid foods, which irritate the kidneys, to control
acidity or alkalinity of the urine. He should also ensure adequate intake of fluids to
prevent the urine from becoming concentrated. The foods considered irritants to the
kidneys are alcoholic beverages; condiments and pickles; certain vegetables like
cucumber, radish, tomato, spinach, rhubarb; those with a strong aroma such as asparagus,
onion, beans, cabbage, and cauliflower; meat and gravies; and carbonated waters.
Cystone is effective in flushing out urinary stones within 6 months of treatment. It also
prevents recurrence of stone formation in a majority of cases and helps to avoid surgery.
Cystone has a mucolytic action together with some diuretic and spasmolytic action. It has
an effect on crystalloid-colloid balance and disintegrating action on mucin in the calculi.
