Matthew 3:16-17 (New International Version)

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the

water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw
the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on
him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son,
whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

John 1:18 (New International Version)

18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son,
who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the
Father, has made him known.

John 17:3 (New International Version)

3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only
true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Matthew 11:27-30 (New International Version)

“All things have been committed to me by my

27
Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no
one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom
the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,

28
and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and
learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy
and my burden is light.”
John 1

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was

with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in
the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In
him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has
not overcome[a] it.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming

into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the
world was made through him, the world did not
recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but
his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive
him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the
right to become children of God— 13 children born not of
natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s
will, but born of God.

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among

us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only
Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying,

“This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who
comes after me has surpassed me because he was
before me.’”) 16Out of his fullness we have all received
grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was
given through Moses; grace and truth came through
Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one
and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest
relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John 3

5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter

the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and
the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives
birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my
saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8The wind blows
wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot
tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with
everyone born of the Spirit.”

13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who
came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses
lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man
must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may
have eternal life in him.”

16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and
only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish
but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into
the world to condemn the world, but to save the world
through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not
condemned, but whoever does not believe stands
condemned already because they have not believed in
the name of God’s one and only Son.

19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but
people loved darkness instead of light because their
deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the
light, and will not come into the light for fear that their
deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth
comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that
what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

31 The one who comes from above is above all; the one
who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks
as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven
is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and
heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever has
accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the
one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for
God gives the Spirit without limit. 35The Father loves the
Son and has placed everything in his hands. 36 Whoever
believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects
the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on
them.

Hebrews 1

God’s Final Word: His Son

1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the

prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in
these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he
appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he
made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s
glory and the exact representation of his being,
sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had
provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right
hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much
superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is
superior to theirs.

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those

who will inherit salvation?
Hebrews 3

Jesus Greater Than Moses

1 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the

heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we
acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. 2 He was
faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was
faithful in all God’s house. 3Jesus has been found worthy
of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a
house has greater honor than the house itself. 4 For
every house is built by someone, but God is the builder
of everything. 5 “Moses was faithful as a servant in all
God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken
by God in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as the Son
over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we
hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we
glory.

7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion,
during the time of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your ancestors tested and tried me,
though for forty years they saw what I did.
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’
12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a
sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living
God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is
called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by
sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ, if
indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very
end.

Hebrews 4

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than

any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing
soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts
and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is
hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid
bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give
account.

1 Peter 2

1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit,

hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like
newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it
you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have
tasted that the Lord is good.

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by

humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you
also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual
house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”

7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to

those who do not believe,

“The stone the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone,”

8 and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble

and a rock that makes them fall.”[d]

They stumble because they disobey the message—

which is also what they were destined for.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy

nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare
the praises of him who called you out of darkness into
his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but
now you are the people of God; once you had not
received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
