Dear Parents
(and children, too!),

Spectrum News is dedicated to

providing accurate and updated
weather forecasts every ten
minutes with Weather on the 1s.

Sometimes we cover severe

weather and that can frighten
young children. We developed
this Project Weather activity book
so parents can discuss severe
weather with their children while
also having fun. Enjoy and thanks
for watching Spectrum News.

What is
DOPPLER RADAR?

Doppler radar is a high-powered radar

that provides you with real-time storm
information to show you exactly when
the storm will hit your neighborhood,
right down to your street, with pinpoint
accuracy. At Spectrum News, we
use Doppler radar.

Can you match the cloud name
with the cloud description?

Flat-looking clouds that

can stretch across the
sky like a blanket.

Puffy clouds that look

like cotton balls in
the sky.

Wispy clouds that

are feathery-looking.

If you can hear thunder, you are close enough

to the storm to be struck by lightning. Seek safe
shelter immediately. To estimate the distance in
miles between you and the lightning flash, count
the seconds between the lightning and the
thunder, then divide by 5.

Color by letter
Find the 4 color squares on the sticker page, then stick them in the
squares below. Color each letter to match the colored square.

Radar helps us see “inside” a thunderstorm

to detect hazardous weather conditions. The
colors on the screen show RED for very heavy
rainfall. YELLOW is heavy precipitation, but
not as much as RED. The GREEN area is
moderate rainfall and BLUE indicates
very light rain.

Learn How To Call for Help in an Emergency
Learn how and when to call 9-1-1 for help. Post
emergency phone numbers near the telephone,
clearly visible. Even very young children can learn
how and when to call for emergency assistance.

Remember... when an emergency happens in your

community, the local American Red Cross chapter
can help you and your family. For more safety
information, contact your local Red Cross chapter,
