5. Aim of Subject To expose the students to the history of science and technology, issues of the impact of
technology on development and environment, issues of engineering in the Malaysian context,
the engineering profession, the code of ethics and professionalism.

Engineering Challenges in Modern Society

The challenges faced by engineers in making modern life possible. Assurance
of public safety, health and clean environment. Impacts of human-induced
climate change, greenhouse effects, global warming. Incorporation of public
and environmental safety in engineering designs. Threat of depletion of fossil
fuels, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Engineering, Technology and Development 10

History of Engineering and Technology. Role of engineering and technology


as indicators of development. The contribution of Government in the
deployment of engineering and technology for economic development. New
advances in world of engineering and technology.
Engineering, Technology and Environment 6

Environmental quality protection and prevention through engineering and


technology. Roles and functions of international and local organizations
related to the environment. Malaysian statutory and legal requirements on
environment quality. National Environmental Policy. Achievements of
engineering and technology in environment protection.

Engineering Public Safety and Health, Environment and Sustainability

Engineering safety and health awareness and compliance to relevant statutory


and legal requirements. Incorporating imperative safety and health elements
in designing and handling of societal issues and engineering practice. 9
Compliance with environmental legal requirements. Promote environmentally
responsible practice and sustainability design principles; Commitment to
environmental education and awareness; Conservation of energy, water and
other resources.

Ethics and Professionalism

Importance of laws and ethics. Professional rights of engineers; codes of
ethics; ethical assessment; conflicts of interest; loyalty and dissent, codes of
conduct of engineers; accountability of engineers; development of ethical
engineering professionalism; Engineering professional bodies and Board of
Engineers monitoring and regulating functions.
