Section-A
A. Attempt all the parts. (10 X 2 = 20)

1. What is the whirl velocity in turbine? Give the significance of whirl velocity.
2. Why spiral casing of varying cross sectional area is employed in reaction turbines.
3. Differentiate between impulse turbine and reaction turbine.
4. Define the terms “unit power”, “unit speed” and “unit discharge” with reference to a
hydraulic turbine
5. Define the term: suction head, delivery head, static head and manometric head.
6. Define Thoma’s cavitation number.
7. How does a specific speed of a centrifugal pump differ from that of a turbine.
8. Write the equation of discharge through a single acting reciprocating pump.
9. Why an air vessels are used in a reciprocating pump.
10. Differentiate between a single acting reciprocating pump and double acting reciprocating
pump.

Section-B
B. Attempt Any three the parts. (3 X 10 = 30)

11. A Kaplan turbine runner is to be designed to develop 7357.5 kW shaft power. The net
available head is 5.50 m Assume that the speed ratio is 2.09 and flow ratio is 0.68 and the
overall efficiency is 60%. The diameter of the boss is 1/3 rd of the diameter of runner.
Find the diameter of the runner, its speed and its specific speed.
12. Show that hydraulic efficiency for a Francis turbine having velocity of flow through
runner as constant, is given by the relation:

Where symbols have there standard meanings. The turbine is having radial discharge at
outlet.
13. A centrifugal pump is to discharge 0.118 m3/s at a speed of 1450 rpm against a head of 25
m. The impeller diameter is 250mm, its width at outlet is 50 mm and manomatric
efficiency is 75%. Determine the vane angle at the outer periphery of the impeller.
14. The diameter of an impeller of a centrifugal pump at inlet and outlet are 30 cm and 60 cm
respectively. The velocity of flow at outlet is 2 m/s and the vanes are set back at an angle
of 450 at the outlet. Determine the minimum starting speed of the pump if the manomatric
efficiency is 70%.
15. Derive an expression for the head lost due to friction in the delivery pipe of a
reciprocating pump with air vessel.

Section-C
C. Attempt All the parts. (5 X 10 = 50)

16. Attempt any one.

a) Discuss the performance characteristics curves of hydraulic turbines in detail.
b) A conical draft-tube having inlet and outlet diameter 1 m and 1.5 m discharges
water at outlet with a velocity of 2.5 m/s. The total length of draft tube is 6 m and
1.2 m of the length of draft-tube is immersed in water. If the atmospheric pressure
head is 10.3 m of water and loss of head due to friction in the draft tube is equal to
(0.2 x velocity head at outlet) of the tube find: (i) Pressure head at inlet and (ii)
Efficiency of draft tube.
17. Attempt any one.
a) A centrifugal pump delivers 25 liters of water per second against a head of 10
meters and running at 1300 rpm requires 10 kW of power. Determine the
discharge, head of the pump and power required if the pump runs at 1500 rpm.

b) A centrifugal pump with 1.2 m diameter runs at 200 rpm and pumps 1880 liters/s
the average lift being 6 m. The angle which the vanes make at exit with the tangent
to impeller is 260 and the radial velocity of flow 2.5 m/s. Determine the manometer
efficiency and the least speed to start pumping against a head of 6 m, the inner
diameter of the impeller being 0.6 m.

a) A single acting reciprocating pump has a plunger diameter of 250 mm and stroke
of 450 mm and it is driven with S.H.M. at 60 rpm. The length and diameter of
delivery pipe by fitting an air vessel on the delivery side of the pump. Assume
friction = 0.01.
b) Derive the expression for discharge, work done and power required to drive double
acting reciprocating pump.
19. Attempt any one.
a) A centrifugal pump having outer diameter equal to two times the inner diameter
and running at 1000 r p m work against a total head of 40 m. The velocity of flow
through the impeller is constant and equal to 2.5 m/s. The vanes are set back at an
