Introduction:

In the beginning we are proud to be introduced to Injaz Junior

Achievement Program. At the same time we were curious about
the content of this program because its name reflected how
important ethics could affect our lives. When we got in the first
session, we sat in various groups to solve out a problem we were
given in our activity book. We wondered what this activity has
anything to do with business ethics. But going through this
program made us realize things that we were never aware of, so
it opened our eyes into critical matters. A lot of things came to
our mind when we were introduced to a new topic every week.
We tried to think positively on how it would affect our lives as it
showed us the importance of ethics as a main issue in our
everyday life. Imagine that you are facing an issue where your
job title and your friendship is at stake, what will you choose?? If I
tell on my friend then I will loose her and if I don’t then I don’t
deserve to be in the position that I am in now…those are the first
thoughts that came to our mind. We were confused yet worried
on what is going to backfire at us. We had no experience in
ethics whatsoever. But we had to make a choice because life
goes on and no matter how much we postpone our decision
making, one way or another we will make it. As we came across
the different definitions in ethics we saw that each one was
connected to the other in all ways. Finally we came to a
conclusion that if there is no ethics, life would be a mess. Now we
are excited to stand here today and take you in a brief journey
through our Injaz experience.

Definition of Business Ethics:

Going back to our first session when we were asked by our

instructor about the definition of Business Ethics, we were
surprised because we didn’t know that there was something
called Business Ethics. We knew what ethics was but we only
understood it in our own words. Then we were introduced to the
main definition which is “the standards that helps us determine
what is good, right and proper”. As we moved from session to
session we went deeper into the meaning of Business Ethics
practically. We were given everyday life problems to solve where
beliefs and values conflict and we were asked what ethical
decisions we will make. That made us more aware of what
Business Ethics meant and how will it affect us and the people
around us. When we were given two different options by our
instructor, and we were asked to choose the right one, (although
both options are favored by us equally) but after we understood
business ethics we were able to choose the right option without
letting the other option slip without notice and care. We had to
face the fact that in business and life one decision has to be made
and one only. We also came to know how to study each option
carefully before making our decision and determine which one is
in our best interest and how will it affect our environment. We
were given a chance to choose the wrong decisions also because
one can only learn from his/her mistakes, and we managed to
experience what would happen if the wrong decision was made.
But that doesn’t mean that if the wrong decision is made you will
loose everything, only it would turn out to be the most valuable
lesson you have taken in ethics. One can’t determine if the
decision he/she has made is right or wrong unless he/she took the
chance and decided to go with his/her decision. This was one
thing we came to know of for sure and will keep in mind in our
life. We are senior students and teenagers at the gates of

5
graduating and entering what we call “the real world” and we are
proud to say that the true meaning of business ethics changed
our prospective in life and showed us that growing up and
entering the real world doesn’t only involve university and work
and starting a family, but it also means that we are going to face
much bigger challenges as we go on with our life and as we
choose our different paths in the future.

Skills:

We got to improve our communication skills verbally or through

listening and writing. Every session involves speaking with the
whole group and reaching out to them and speaking our minds.
We also learned to listen carefully to what others have to say
because every thought counts and every member has a different
or better opinion. We were also given written exercises where we
could communicate with others in a formal and friendly way. We
improved our analytical as well as research skills. We were given
various subjects to research on and we came to know what to
look for easily because we were introduced to the topic in an easy
and fun way. We were able to manage multiple priorities which
helped us to boost/gain our leadership and management skills. In
each session we had multiple tasks and due to the connection of
each topic to another we managed to complete them easily
without worrying which was a priority and which was not. The
whole idea of this program is management and this was easily
done due to the presence of team work and leadership. There
was no difference between the team leader and the team
members because we all worked equally and in good spirit and
the presence of a leader was necessary for the image of the
team. The importance of a leader is focused on how well he/she
can represent the team. We learned not to fight on who gets to
lead because if a team is not united and doesn’t communicate
properly, it never wins. And that every team member is its own
leader in life and has his/her own way in representing and leading

6
the team. Those are the skills that we will always have and will
always keep for the journey of life.

7
Concepts:

During business ethics program, we’ve learnt a lot of new

concepts:

Ethics are the standards that lead to do good actions by knowing

what is right and proper. While Interdependence means a state
where groups are dependent on the actions and strategies of all
the other groups in a community or a firm, which means, when
groups are interdependent, the moves and decisions of one will
affect the others. We also came to know a concept that we deal
with on daily basis (ethical dilemma) is a situation in which a
choice is suspend between conflicting values, which obeying one
will result in overstepping another. In addition, stakeholder is a
person or group who affects or can be affected by a business.
We’ve never heard of the last two concepts but now we know
them, the first one is fallacy that means a mistake or error that
occur during a logical argument, and the second one is
propaganda; is when someone sends and spreads a massage or
information to fraud the receivers, after is has been intentionally
tampered.

Moreover, we’ve recognized two new theories, the classical

theory and stakeholder theory. When a company cares about
its stockholders more than its employees, then this business
follows the classical theory. However, if the business follows the
stakeholder theory then employees will be more important to
care about than the stockholders.

8
Values:

We have learned many values during this program. Honesty is an

important factor in all life’s issues and we’ve learned to be honest
in whatever we do no matter what condition we are in. We also
learned how to take responsibility of our own actions even though
the price is losing something we value. We have vowed to be
loyal to each other every step of the way because we are all in
this together and if one of us falls, we all fall. We’ve managed to
keep a positive attitude in everything because the future is a
mystery and no one knows what it holds for us, so we worked
positively and co-operated positively which helped us gain a
positive outlook on what we have accomplished. We gained self
confidence that we will make it in every step of the way no matter
how much mistakes we’ve made or how many times we’ve failed
because it doesn’t matter as long as we have confidence in our
work and ourselves we will stand up and make it all the way
through our journey in this experience. We were all motivated to
work together and form a team and share our ideas with each
other that we forgot that we were competing against each other
and became flexible with each other in a fashionable and formal
way. We had the willingness to learn no matter what the price
because one cannot have enough of knowledge and education,
and no matter how clever he/she is there will always be a
willingness to learn more. We were all excited once we moved to
new topics and ideas and we thirsted for more every session. We
learned to keep whatever we do to ourselves and maintained a
confidential record of what we do amongst ourselves without
letting anyone know in a respective way. And last but no least,
we’ve learned to be passionate in whatever we do and managed
to give our work a mark that it has been done in passionate way,
which shows that it has been done with care.

9
Teamwork Experience:

One of the best things in this rewarding experience was

teamwork. We got the chance to work in different teams every
session, which helped us know more about each member and
understand the way they thought. We got the chance to show our
creative side while working as a team which made the topic a lot
more interesting than it sounded. The best factor about team
work is speed. With the number of members in each team, every
group managed to finish their tasks in time. There was
satisfaction amongst each team as they handed in their tasks.
We all worked equally and pulled off a good material to present in
front of the other teams. There was also support between us.
Each team member was connected to the other and each
member completed the other. If there was a thing a member
can’t do then she can help in something she can and the same
goes on with the rest. By helping each other we gained skills
from our fellow team members which would come in handy in the
future. There was also respect between us. We all respected
each other equally and listened when one of us had something to
say. We also tried to consider each and every idea given out by
each member to boost their confidence in sharing what they have
for the team. There was a positive energy between us which
made us more excited in fulfilling the task.

10
Feelings:

From the beginning of the first session, we felt anxious because it

felt like the beginning of every new subject we take in school,
only the term “Business Ethics” was entirely different. As the
instructor started explaining the program we grew interested and
wanted to know more because it spoke about ethics affecting
one’s life and how we can make the right choices. We were
happy to know that our school is one of the chosen schools that
have the Injaz Junior Achievement Program which made us more
enthusiastic about going on with the program till the end. At
times during sessions we felt competitive when we were divided
into groups, only the competition was innocent and we had fun
competing against each other. We were always encouraged by
our instructor to do our best in everything which made us feel
special and that we could make a difference if we believed in
ourselves and in what we do. We felt self confident whenever we
stood up and shared an idea and we were not afraid to speak our
minds. We felt that we had to work really hard because this
program leaves a mark in our future resume and we want to
make sure that we earned it through our hard work. And by the
end of the program we were proud to have accomplished
something that was one day a goal. We were happy to know that
we went through this program with patience and we were guided
throughout the journey by our instructor which we thank for all
what she did in making this program a successful reality. And now
we can confidently walk towards a bright future knowing that we
learned something new that will help us in the future.

11
Suggestions:

We suggest that students should

study business ethics as a subject
since it is very crucial, because young
generation learns fast, so in future we
(Bahrainis and citizens) will sow the
benefit of teaching it to the kids as
they will grow up and apply it in
every field of their lives.

In addition we think that Injaz program

should be extended to include many
different people from various educational
and age levels, because all of the students
or workers are qualified to be in the program
as it is a matter of ethics that no one should
omit it, it changes many people’s lives and
builds the future.

This chart shows the amount of students who are

capable of making the right decisions in ethical
dilemmas.
We made a survey with five confusing situations and then
distributed them to five business ethics students and five other
students, all of them were in the same age.

Surprisingly, all of business ethics students’ answers were the

same; they managed to make the right ethical decisions, while
few of the other students got them right.

This statistic demonstrate that learning business ethics increases

the ability to think right which will lead to decide right in tough
situations that all of us human beings might face on daily basis.
