CONFIGURATION AND REALIZATION OF VLAN

AIM:

To analyse the performance of VLAN by using NetSim.

TOOLS REQUIRED:

NetSim

THEORY:

VLAN:

A VLAN (virtual LAN) is a sub network which can group together

collections of devices on separate physical local area networks (LANs). A LAN
is a group of computers and devices that share a communications line or
wireless link to a server within the same geographical area.

VLANs make it easy for network administrators to partition a single

switched network to match the functional and security requirements of their
systems without having to run new cables or make major changes in their
current network infrastructure. VLANs are often set up by larger businesses to
re-partition devices for better traffic management.

VLANs are also important because they can help improve the overall
performance of a network by grouping together devices that communicate most
frequently. VLANs also provide security on larger networks by allowing a
higher degree of control over which devices have access to each other. VLANs
tend to be flexible because they are based on logical connections, rather than
physical.

The key benefits of implementing VLANs include:

 Allowing network administrators to apply additional security to network

communication
 Making expansion and relocation of a network or a network device easier

 Providing flexibility because administrators are able to configure in a
centralized environment while the devices might be located in different
geographical locations
 Decreasing the latency and traffic load on the network and the network
devices, offering increased performance.

PROCEDURE FOR SIMULATION:

To Create Scenario & Generate Traffic:

Step1:

Simulation → New → Internetworks

Step2:

Click & drop Routers, Switches and Nodes onto the Simulation Environment

Step3:

Set the properties of the Routers

Switch Properties: Accept default properties for Switch.

Link Properties: Accept default properties for Link.

Application Properties: Click and drop the Application icon and set properties

Set the properties of Node, Switch, Router& Application then click on Run
Simulation button.

VLAN PROTOCOL:

Figure 1.1 VLAN Protocol Scenario.

Inference:
From fig 1.1 it is observed that the VLAN protocol chooses the node
which has the same VLAN id.

19ML05
Figure 1.2 Application metrics

Inference:
From fig 1.2 it is observed that the Application metrics displays the
packet generated, packet received, Throughput, delay and Jitter.

Figure 1.3 link metrics

Inference:
From fig 1.3, the link metrics will display the number of data and control
packets transmitted, error and collided.

Figure 1.4 TCP metrics

Inference:

From fig 1.4, the TCP metrics will shows the number of segment send,
received.

Figure 1.5 Packet generated and packet received chart

19ML05
INFERENCE

From the figure 1.5, the packet generated and the packet received are equal
in app 1 since it has same VLAN id whereas for app 2 the number of packet
generated is 5000 and received is 0 since it has different VLAN id.

Figure 1.6 Payload generated and payload received chart

INFERENCE

From the figure 1.6, the payload generated and the payload received are
equal in app 1 since it has same VLAN id whereas for app 2 the number of packet
generated is 73000 and received is 0 since it has different VLAN id.

RESULT

Thus the performance of VLAN protocol was analyzed successfully
