2. AIM OF MODULE
This module is designed to introduce basic accounting concepts to students who do not intend to
major in accounting. Accounting is said to be the language of business and a basic knowledge of it
will no doubt enhance students understanding of the business world. Students learn commonly used
accounting terminology, recording financial transactions and preparing financial statements which
are essential for business students. The module also prepares learners for further accounting
modules included in their programmes.

3. SUMMARY OF MODULE CONTENT/UNITS


The need for accounting and the accounting equation; The Double-Entry System of Book-
keeping; The Cash Book; Books of Original Entry; The income Statement and Statement of
Financial Position ; Accounting for depreciation and disposal of non-current assets;
Adjustments on Final Accounts ; Bank Reconciliation; Introduction to Costing; Marginal
Costing and decision making

4. LEARNINGOUTCOMES
Having studied this module, the students should be able to:
• Explain the nature and role of accounting
• Identify the main users of accounting information and their information needs
• Explain the various assumptions used in preparing financial statements
• Record business transactions using the accounting equation
• Record transactions using the double-entry system
• Extract a trial balance
• Explain the use of the cash book and its preparation
• Post transactions from books of original entry to the ledger
• Prepare an income statement and a statement of financial position
• Calculate depreciation using the different methods of depreciation
• Effect entries for the revaluation of non-current assets
• Prepare financial statements after adjustment

• Prepare a bank reconciliation statement
• Prepare income statements using marginal and absorption costing
• Calculate and interpret the break-even point

6. VENUE & HOURS/WEEK/MODE OF DELIVERY


All lectures will be held in the room and slot allocated to you (Please refer to your planner)

Tutorials will be delivered on a face-to-face basis although attendance is not compulsory. During
the tutorial, the lecturer provides a constructive explanation on the basic concepts and it will be
supported by examples. Participation from students is highly encouraged. At the end of each
session, a set of questions will be provided to enable you to practice the key concepts done in the
sessions and all notes and power-points will be posted on moodle.
