Grade 7 Physical Education- Dance

Malinka Voytechek

General Learning Outcomes

GLO A: Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement
activities; dance, games, types of gymnastics, individual activities and activities in an alternative
environment; e.g., aquatics and outdoor pursuits.
GLO C: Students will interact positively with others.

Specific Learning Outcomes

Appropriate Movement Activities:
A7–8 refine and present a variety of dance sequences; e.g., folk, square, social and novelty, alone and
with others
A7–9 choreograph and perform dance sequences, using the elements of movement and basic dance
steps and patterns
Interact Positively with Others:
C7–4 identify and then take responsibility for various roles while participating in physical activity; and,
identify the leadership and followership skills used while participating in physical education
C7–6 identify and demonstrate positive behaviors that show respect for self and others

Rationale:

This performance task gives students an opportunity to explore movement through dance

while immersing themselves in new cultures. Through this performance task, students will gain a

broader understanding of how dance has the ability to create unity within communities, while

also developing fundamental movement skills. They will explore multiple elements of dance

including how to be respectful and partake in positive behaviors individually and with others.

Students will also explore how the roles of leadership and followership are demonstrated in

various aspects of dance. With the help of this performance task, students will be able to explain

how the fundamental movement skills we use in dance can be transferred to other areas of

physical activity.
The purpose of the performance task is to provide students with the opportunity to

explore and learn about different cultures and the dances associated with the specific culture

chosen. The intention of this performance task is to foster an accepting and inclusive

environment for students of various cultural backgrounds in the classroom.

For the performance task, each group will research a culture of their choice and learn key

facts about the culture. They will then select a dance relevant to the selected culture. The groups

will also be required to select a song that will be played when teaching the dance and played

during the final dance. One portion of the presentation will include sharing information on the

culture chosen. The main portion of the presentation will involve the presentation group teaching

their peers the cultural dance. To conclude the presentation, the group will lead the class in the

performance of the cultural dance. The performance task may be carried out in multiple

modalities such as small group teaching, whole-class teaching or making an instructional video.

As demonstrated in the holistic rubric the performance task will be assessing the

student’s ability to: teach their peers, equally distribute the workload, effectively present the

dance with their peers and demonstrate respectful and positive behaviours. Throughout the

performance task, students will be assessed formatively through observation and group

journaling. The observation checklist will include anecdotal notes and a checklist on attendance

including proper attire, willingness to participate, and cooperation. By including the observation

checklist, students will clearly understand the expectations for this performance task. They also

need to attend classes and be involved in the group presentation, in order for the group to

succeed in the performance task. For the journaling, they will write an entry at the end of class as

a group reflecting on their work throughout the class and what they need to work on for the next
day. The journaling will help with monitoring their work and staying on task during their

preparation classes. It will help them process through possible issues that may arise during their

peer teach and performance.
