Daily Lesson Plan (Template)

Name: Laken Cyrus Date: March 20, 2020

Subject: Math Topic: 2D Shapes

Grade: 2nd Grade Length of Lesson: 1 hour

The Big Idea: How do you sort 2D shapes?

Domain: Geometry

Cluster: Reason with Shapes and Their Attributes

Standard: M.2.24 -Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given
number of angles or a given number of equal faces (sizes are compared directly or visually,
not compared by measuring). Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and
cubes.

Specific Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of the standard by completing pages in
their math books with 90% accuracy.

Introduction: The teacher will begin the lesson by showing the students pattern blocks and
passing them out to the students to use as a manipulative.

Method(s):
 Book Work
 Discussion
 Hands On

Materials/Equipment/Technology/Community Resources:
 Math Books
 Pattern Blocks

Depth of Knowledge:
Level 1: Illustrate how to use other shapes to make a trapezoid
Level 2: Compare the shapes that you used to make a different shape
Level 3: Construct the design in the book
Level 4: Apply concepts about shapes
Direct Instruction/Warm-Up Activity/Presentation/Model Lesson/Make Connections:
The teacher will explain how to use the pattern blocks. The teacher will have them work on page
375 with the pattern blocks and orally. For example, the page has a hexagon. The teacher will
have the students use other shapes to make a hexagon. The students can use 6 triangles to
compose their hexagon. The teacher will have the students draw their triangles in their hexagon
on page 375.
Guided Practice:
The teacher will work page 736 in the workbook with the students about shapes sides and angles.
The teacher will help the students to build on their lesson from the previous day about shapes
and their angels.

Independent Practice:
The students will work on page 737 and the teacher will have the students check the work as a
whole class and correct any mistakes. On this page, students will draw a shape with 9 angles and
7 angles. The teacher will allow the students to show their work to their peers and have them
count the angles.

Differentiation:(You need to address in your differentiation of the lesson how you will meet
the needs of the 3 Tiers. Be sure you are specific)

Tier 1 Learners: The teacher will answer students question and aid in understanding.
Tier 2 Learners: The teacher will walk around the room and assist students.
Tier 3 Learners: The teacher will provide time for students to complete.

Evaluation/Assessment: The teacher will informally assess the students through their answers
and work while walking around the room and hearing the student’s answers. The teacher will
formally assess the students with a test at a later time.

Wrap-Up (Lesson Closure) / Concluding Activity:

The teacher will close the lesson by having students put their math books in their lockers.
