CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Hymn of Invocation: When in the Hour of Deepest Need LSB 615

5 O from our sins, Lord, turn Your face;

Absolve us through Your boundless grace.
Be with us in our anguish still;
Free us at last from ev’ry ill.

6 So we with all our hearts each day

To You our glad thanksgiving pay,
Then walk obedient to Your Word,
And now and ever praise You, Lord.

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Holy Gospel Matthew 26:1-16

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-sixth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, “You know that after two
days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest,
whose name was Caiaphas, and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.
But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”
Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him
with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined
at table. And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this
could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, said to
them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. For you
always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. In pouring this ointment on
my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial.
Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done
will also be told in memory of her.”
Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said,
“What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.
And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn: Not All the Blood of Beasts LSB 431

Holy Gospel Matthew 26:17-25

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-sixth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will
you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man
and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house
with my disciples.’” And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the
Passover.
When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. And as they were eating, he said,
“Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” And they were very sorrowful and began to say
to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish
with me will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that

man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not
been born.” Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have
said so.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

P Having heard the Word of God, let us confess our sins, imploring God our Father the sake of His Son,
Jesus Christ, to grant us forgiveness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever
offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry
for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of
the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious
and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of
the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the
command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and
of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Old Testament Reading Exodus 24:3–11

Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the just decrees. And all the
people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the LORD has spoken we will do.”
And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. He rose early in the morning and built an
altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. And
he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace
offerings of oxen to the LORD. And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of
the blood he threw against the altar. Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the
hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be
obedient.” And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of
the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”
Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, and
they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone,
like the very heaven for clearness. And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people
of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle 1 Corinthians 10:16-17

The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that
we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are
many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.
Verse for Lent
C Return to the Lord, your God,
for He is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love,
and abounding in steadfast love.
Holy Gospel Mark 14:12-26
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fourteenth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.

And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his
disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of
water will meet you. Follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The
Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ And
he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” And the
disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared
the Passover.

And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. And as they were reclining at table and
eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”
They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” He said to them, “It is
one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. For the Son of Man goes as
it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have
been better for that man if he had not been born.”

And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and
said, “Take; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to
them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is
poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that
day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,

the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the
dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT

Welcome to Trinity Lutheran Church! We rejoice that you have joined us for worship.
Today we will be celebrating the Sacrament of the Altar. Please take a moment to read about
our practice.

If you are not a confirmed member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) we would
ask that you not partake of the Sacrament of the Altar (communion).

We also desire greatly that you might become a part of our common public confession and
fellowship. We invite you to speak to our Pastor or an Elder and to be part of our “What Do
We Believe” Bible series, which begins twice annually. Thank you again for joining us, and
we hope to see you more often.

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts.

C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God.

C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to
You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who
accomplished the salvation of mankind by the tree of the cross that, where death arose,
there life also might rise again and that the serpent who overcame by the tree of the garden
might likewise by the tree of the cross be overcome. Therefore with angels and archangels
and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore
praising You and saying:

C Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;

P heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
C Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
P Blessed is He,
C blessed is He,
ALL: blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.
C Hosanna,
P hosanna,
ALL: hosanna in the highest.
Lord’s Prayer
C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Words of Institution
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given
thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given
for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to
them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for
you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

P The Peace of the LORD be with you always.

C Amen.
You will be directed to drive up for Communion. If you do not wish to take communion, please cross your arms as
you come to Pastor and the Elder and your care will continue through the line.

Benediction
P The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to
you. The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.
C Amen.

Jesus, I Will Ponder Now LSB 440

5 If my sins give me alarm
And my conscience grieve me,
Let Your cross my fear disarm;
Peace of conscience give me.
Help me see forgiveness won
By Your holy passion.
If for me He slays His Son,
God must have compassion!

6 Graciously my faith renew;

Help me bear my crosses,
Learning humbleness from You,
Peace mid pain and losses.
May I give You love for love!
Hear me, O my Savior,
That I may in heav’n above
Sing Your praise forever.
