Introduction

In the next work i will solve the pre task Pre task - Introduction, in order to remember the
concepts of wave physics and electromagnetism, to determine parameters and general
characteristics of electromagnetic waves, using concepts and mathematical methods for the
solution of application exercises.
Solution of the 4 questions

1. What is an electromagnetic wave?

R/: They are those waves that do not need a material means to propagate. They
include, among others, visible light and radio, television and telephone waves.
Electromagnetic waves propagate through an oscillation of electric and magnetic fields
Let us now consider an electromagnetic wave traveling through empty space. The
intensity of these waves remains constant while traveling. However, it should be kept
in mind that they are an idealization that allows us to simplify the mathematical
treatment of propagation but, in practice, plane wavefronts are hardly ever observed.
2. What is electrical permittivity ε and magnetic permeability μ of a medium?
R/: permittivity ε : It is a physical parameter of materials that describes how much is
affected by an electric field. The information of the electric field is contained in vectors
E and D, where E is the intensity and D is the electric displacement or density of
electric flux.
Permeability μ: In physics, the ability of materials, media or substances to affect and
be affected by magnetic fields is called magnetic permeability, as well as the ability to
become sources of these, that is, ability to create them without the need for currents
external. This magnitude is defined by the relationship between the magnetic
induction (also called magnetic flux density) and the magnetic field intensity that are
affecting the interior of the material, and is represented by the symbol μ.

3. In a vacuum, what is the value of the electric permittivity ε o and the magnetic
permeability μo ?

R/: The electrical permittivity of the vacuum is constant and is given by

The vacuum, for example, is a linear, homogeneous and isotropic material and its
magnetic permeability is given by:
4. From the following wave equation:

(
E y ( x , t )= A sen ( wt−kx )= A sen 2 πft−
λ )
x =C 1 sen ( C 2 x 10 3 t−C 3 x )

where C 1 , C2 and C 3correspond to the last 3 digits of your identification, calculate:

a. Amplitude A .
b. Frequency f .
c. Wavelength λ .
d. Propagation speed V p=f λ.
e. Wave number k .
f. Angular frequency w .
g. Direction of travel.
h. Polarization direction.
R/: Note: My ID ends in 990 but so as not to give me errors in the Wavelength λ equation,
change C 3=9

(
E y ( x , t )= A sen ( wt−kx )= A sen 2 πft−
λ )
x =9 sen ( 9 x 103 t−9 x )

A= 9

9 x 103
f =2 π f = =143.23 Hz

2π 2π 2π
λ= = = =0.69 m
λ k 9
V p=f λ=143.23 Hz∗0.69 m=98,8 m/ s

k =9
w=9
Direction of travel=x
Polarization direction=y
Conclusions

We conclude that electromagnetic waves can be perceived according to their

frequency, similar to this is what happens with colors, when light is refracted in a
prism, not all colors are equally intense, everything depends on the wavelength this
time.

Electromagnetic radiation consists of the propagation of such waves in space. These

waves are a composition of two types of field, the electric and magnetic fields, and do
not require a means to propagate. In order to understand more about this
phenomenon, we must first analyze some basic concepts.
