Composite 2D Shapes

A composite shape (or compound shape) is a more complex shape that is made up of two or
more simple shapes such as triangles, rectangles, squares, circles, and semicircles.

Perimeter : Add up the lengths of each outside edge.

Area : Separate the figure into simpler shapes whose area can be found. Then add the areas
together. Be sure than none of the simpler figures have overlapping areas.

Example 1

Perimeter = 5cm + 2cm + 4cm + 3cm + 7cm

= 21cm

Area : Seperate composite shapes to simple 2D shapes

Area of Rectangle = length x height Area of Rectangle = length x height

= 3cm x 5cm = 4cm x 3cm
= 15cm2 = 12cm2

Area of composite shape = Area A + Area B

= 15cm2 + 12cm2
= 27cm2
Example 2

Perimeter = 5cm + 6cm + 13cm +14cm

B = 38 cm
