Communication Skills:
“It is the process of transferring information and meaning between senders and receivers, using one or
more media”

Categories of Communication channel:

On the basis of the communication channels, types of communications are:

A. Verbal/oral communication
B. Non-Verbal / interpersonal communication
C. Visual communication
D. Written communication
E. Formal & informal

Oral communication: Verbal communication can also be called as Oral communication. In very
simple terms, any communication that happens orally between people is known as verbal
communication. The objective of such communications is to ensure that people understand
whatever you want to convey.

Non-Verbal / interpersonal communication: The nonverbal way is the most commonly used
communication medium in the world in culture. Sometimes we may not know the exact name of
those but we use them basically almost every time. Though no word is used in non-verbal
communication, it can effectively communicate many human feelings more accurately than
verbal methods of communication.

Types of Non-verbal Communication

o Eye contact.
o Facial expressions.
o Gestures.
o Posture and body orientation.
o Body Language.
o Space and Distance.
o Humor.
o Touch.
o Silence.
o Personal Appearance.
o Symbol.

Visual communication: Visual communication is the practice of graphically representing information


to efficiently, effectively create meaning. There are many types of content in the realm of visual
communication, with examples including infographics, interactive content, motion graphics, and more.

There are many elements in visual communication that can be used by marketers or companies.

o Colors (such as brand colors)


o Design (logo and brand design)
o Advertising
o Animations
o Presentations
o Video resume’s

Written communication: The Written Communication refers to the process of conveying a message
through the written symbols. In other words, any message exchanged between two or more persons
that make use of written words is called as written communication. In any organization, the electronic
mails, memos, reports, documents, letters, journals, job descriptions, employee manuals, etc. are
some of the commonly used forms of written communication.

Formal communication: There are two types of communication when considering the formality of the
communication. One is the formal and official type of communication which can be emails, letterheads,
memos, reports and other such kinds of written material. These are considered as documentary
evidence and certain formality is associated with them.

Informal communication: Informal communication is one where there is nothing official about the
communication that is happening. It can be known as Grapevine communication. There is no specific
channel of informal communication because there is Social media, WhatsApp, SMS which are all vehicles
of informal communication which can be used by people.
