SECTION I.

THE ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE (30 points)

Read the text and do the tasks below the text.
Using Films, Television and Celebrities for Advertising
1 The connection between films, TV, celebrities and selling things is becoming more
important these days. Now manufacturers are keen to get their products seen on films and TV
so much that they are ready to pay the film or TV company to use their product. Any product
in a film or TV will be seen by millions and this is what companies need.
5 Films often show a particular lifestyle so this is especially good if companies are
trying to sell luxury goods, such as expensive watches or phones. TV, on the other hand,
represents our lives a bit more closely. This might be a domestic soap opera, which is good
for selling things such as coffee, or a TV series popular with teenagers, which is a good
opportunity for selling fashionable clothes for the young. Studies report that there has been
a 10 rise of nearly 800% in the sales of some products.
Most companies now recognize the importance of celebrities in advertisements.
Celebrities are attractive to companies because they get photographed so much and there are
many articles about them in the magazines. So, the advantage of a celebrity using a product
is that the companies get more advertising just because the celebrity is always in the public
15 eye. Moreover, people have a peculiar attitude to celebrity. It is almost as if they can
imagine being like these celebrities. There is no doubt that if a celebrity uses a product, then
people are willing to pay extra for that product.
Yet, it is a mistake to think that celebrities can choose which products they want to
advertise. The companies look very carefully at who they think portrays the right image for
20 the product. If, for example, a perfume is very stylish, then the company must choose a
celebrity who is seen as being very stylish. It is essential to match the product to the right
celebrity.
Research into celebrity advertising shows that sports stars and actors are the best for
selling products. Often they have quite a long career and they can advertise successfully
25 because their fans admire them.

from an English-speaking country who made or has been making an impact on her 0 0
country or our world. Make a suggestion to your mayor describing her role and your
attitude towards her. 2 2

All well-known books about Harry Potter. So I want to suggest naming the street after
the writer who wrote these wonderful books, J. K. Rowling. The writer was born in
1965. In the beginning, Joan was very poor and started writing a novel for her son to
entertain him. But after publishing the books and their film adaptations, she became rich
and became one of the wealthiest influential women in Britain today. This woman has
made a huge contribution to the development of our modernity and made life a little
magical.

SECTION IV. THE ASSESSMENT OF CIVIC AND PRAGMATIC COMPETENCES
(30 points)
Write a 180-200-word coherent text expressing your attitude on the given topic.
Should lyceum students have a part-time job? Agree or/and disagree. Justify your 2 2
opinion. Present two examples. Use the following plan: 1 1

In our modern world making money is one of the most significant skills so some 2 2
people believe all teenagers should have a part-time job while others do not agree. In 1 1
my opinion, it is a good idea that all youth should have a part-time job. 0 0
To begin with, having a job is an opportunity to prepare for the future adulthood
and to feel yourself independent. Besides, a part-time job brings some money so 4 4
schoolchildren can afford to buy more things. Finally, working teenagers spend their 3 3
free time usefully when a lot of young people just surf the Net and watch TV. 2 2
However, not all people share my point of view and there are few people who 1 1
0 0
believe it is wrong when adolescents work because having a job can have a negative
effect on a student’s academic performance. Moreover, they are convinced that a 3 3
teen’s job may worsen relationships with family and friends. 2 2
Despite my respect for this opinion, I cannot agree with this. Firstly, a part-time 1 1
job usually takes up only for 3-4 hours a day taking into account the existence of days 0 0
off so students who work can find the time for their homework.
Secondly, teens can work with their friends or relatives so it brings them together. 2 2
In conclusion I would like to say that a part-time job teaches young people how to 1 1
become a responsible and successful person. 1 0
