Welcome
Thank you for downloading PhaseBug from BetabugsAudio. The plug-in
accomplishes an important goal using a remarkably simple and yet
powerful interface.

PhaseBug's primary function is to shift the phase of an incoming audio

signal. This is a critical function in fixing source signals that have phase
errors in relation to one another, which can cause inappropriate
cancellation or reinforcement of frequencies in a mix.

As part of the testing and correcting procedure, a user will occasionally

need to sum the stereo signal to mono, which is the surest way to help
isolate phase issues. A useful side effect is that PhaseBug may also be used
strictly for this purpose-- quickly summing a stereo signal to mono.

Some individuals may also find PhaseBug useful for introducing intentional
phase 'errors' for creative effects, often by using a duplicate of the same
track, or by clever routing in a modular environment. Power-users may
even develop ways to use automation to create custom phaser effects,
giving the control freaks out there more control over the exact effect than
they could produce with traditional 'automatic' phasers.

While most situations will call for the stereo version of the PhaseBug, we
have also included a mono version. This proves handy when tweaking
individual mono tracks.

In order to get the most out of the PhaseBug, please spend a few moments
reading this brief manual.

License
PhaseBug has a very simple license:

1. PhaseBug is freeware. This means that you are free to distribute it,
give it to friends, or otherwise share it around. However, only the
entire unaltered archive, including this document, may be re-
distributed.

2. Copyright of the code and the finished plug-in remain the property of
BetabugsAudio and PhaseBug' author, Christian W. Budde.

3. This plug-in is provided at no cost; therefore the author and

BetabugsAudio assume no responsibility for any damage that may
occur to the end user or the equipment used to run the plug-in.

4. Magazine editors are welcome to include the plug-in on covermount

discs or similar media; however, we request that a member of the
BetabugsAudio team be informed via e-mail. A few copies of the
publication would also be appreciated, but not expected.

Note about Beta

This plug-in is not to be considered a full release at this point in time. It is
remarkably stable when used for 'static' operations, but creative
manipulation including rapid realtime or automation movement of the
bubbles will cause an occasional noise burst. We currently recommend
that you keep your output (speakers or headphones) at low to moderate
levels in order to avoid any negative repurcussions of such bursts, including
having the crap scared out of you during dark late-night mixing/recording
sessions!

As we approach a full release version, we invite reports about PhaseBug's

behaviour in various host applications, particularly as it relates to this
issue. Thanks for trying out the plug!

Controls
left channel bubble

phase indicator

mono switch

right channel bubble

left channel phase position

right channel phase position

Channel bubbles: Original source material is considered to be at zero

degrees. As you move the bubbles, the audio will shift in relation to the
original signal. A bubble positioned at 180° will mean that the audio
passing through is now completely out of phase with the original.

Phase position numerical readout: In the bottom left and right

corners are readouts indicating relative phase position. As a bubble is
clicked or moved, a number will appear to tell you the exact phase shift
being assigned. As a bubble is released, its number will fade out.

Phase indicator: The brown Phase Bug will blur as the left and right
channels are shifted away from one another. He is not a realtime audio
analyzer, however. He is simply a visual representation of the bubbles'
relation to one another. Although moving the bubbles will cause him to
become blurry, the end result in your actual mix may be that the signals'
phase errors are being fixed. Mostly, he just looks cool. Isn't he cute?

Mono switch: The company's logo, “BetabugsAudio” acts as a switch.

When you click the logo, it becomes yellow and the stereo signal is summed
to mono, in order to help track down and fix phase errors.

Notes on bubble control:

• Control of the bubbles is circular in relation to the centre of the “ring”.

After you click a bubble, it will follow the movement of the cursor as it
relates to the centre of the ring. For example, no matter the actual
distance from the middle of the plug-in, if the cursor is at “3 o'clock”,
then the bubble you have clicked will also be at “3 o'clock” on the ring.

• Shift + dragging a bubble to move both at the same time, in the same
direction, at the same rate. (relationship is maintained)

• Ctrl + dragging a bubble will move the other bubble in the opposite
direction by the same amount. (relationship is altered)

Mono PhaseBug

The sole function of the mono

version of the plug-in is to shift
a mono audio source's phase.

An example of usage could be

the adjustment of 2 separate
mono tracks' relationship to
one another.
