Mediartrix Presents: Bonnie and Clyde: An Adaptation

The UST Mediartrix, The Official Multimedia Organization of the University of Santo
Tomas, presented its major production last April 27, April 28, April 30 and May 2, 2015
at the Albertus Magnus Auditorium. The UST Mediartrix adapted the musical, Bonnie
and Clyde. The play production is based on the life of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow,
real life outlaws from America during the 1930s. They lived a life of love, crime and
adventure but eventually had to succumb to the reality of life as they were shot down at
Bienville Parish, Louisiana.
Mediartrix did an awesome job in adapting the production; it was the first ever
adaptation of Bonnie and Clyde here in the Philippines. There was much positive
feedback from almost everyone who watched the show. I am a proud member of this
organization, but unfortunately I was not able to partake in the production because of so
much academic requirements. I was able to watch the April 30 show, from 6:00- 8:00
PM and I must say I was surprised by the excellence of the adaptation. As a member, I
had inside news of the struggles the cast and production team had to undergo to just to
deliver a production.
I learned a lot from the story itself. The truth is, when they were looking for a proposal
for the major production last semester, I didn’t expect Bonnie and Clyde to be chosen
because it’s not mainstream musicale. The story is a bit similar to Romeo and Juliet in
some ways. The couple had to undergo a lot of struggle along the way of their love. It
starts with their meeting at the bar where a young, ambitious Bonnie Parker was
working. She believes one day she can star in a movie and her poems can be published
on local newspapers. In that bar, she meets a young, adventurous Clyde Barrow. While
Bonnie dreams of fame in the movies and arts, Clyde dreams of fame by becoming a
well-known outlaw like Billy The Kid and Al Capone. The moment they met each other,
there was an instant spark of emotions and their short and loving life starts from there. I
learned about the perks of unconditional love and how it takes so much sacrifice to love
someone so much. They’re not the perfect couple, but they gave their love their all and
they lived life without regrets because of their love for each other.
