IV Semester Civil Engineering

CIE 2255: Water Resources Engineering

Tutorial III
1. Determine the design flood discharge allowing an increase of 33 % over the estimated flood
peak for a bridge site having the following data
Catchment area - 2 × 105 ha
Observed Max. storm precipitation - 3 cm for 8 hr duration
Time of Concentration - 2 hr
Gauged discharge during the past flood was 3400 cumecs for an average max. daily
rainfall of 18 cm
2. A culvert is proposed across a stream draining an area of 185 ha. Estimate the 25 year flood
1000(T)0.2
if, the rainfall intensity is given by I = where I is in mm/hr, T in years and t is in
(tc +20)0.7
minutes. Assume that maximum length of travel for water is 3.8 km and the average slope of
the basin is 1 in 80 and runoff coefficient is 0.4. What should be the design flood if a factor
of safety of 2.5 is desirable
3. The table below gives the ordinates of storm hydrograph measured at an interval of 3 hours.
Plot the storm hydrograph, direct runoff hydrograph and 3 hour unit hydrograph. Effective
duration of storm was 3 hours. Assume a constant base flow of 14 m3/sec. The catchment
area is estimated to be 30 sq.km.

4. The ordinates of a 4 hour unit hydrograph are given below. Derive and plot the flood
hydrograph resulting from a storm of 4 hour effective duration and a total depth of 3.5 cm.
The Ø-index for the catchment is estimated to be 0.375cm/hr. Base flow may be assumed to
be 15 m3/sec at the beginning and increasing by 2 m3/sec after 6 hours till the end
