W/S No.: __05______ Submission Date: _____________

Summary:

Addition Terminology
The numbers you add are all called addends.
The answer is called the sum.
It is called a sum even when you
haven’t yet calculated it.
So 13 + 7 is the sum of 13 and 7.
The whole “thing” is an addition
sentence.

Adding with no carryovers: You have already learnt adding with carryovers. Let me explain this
once again.
Let us look at an example with two-digit numbers, say 12 + 15. In the first step, we will add 2 + 5.
This will result in 7. We will write down 7 as the output of the first step. Unlike the above example,
there is nothing left now to be carried over. In the second step, we will add 1 (from 12) and 1 (from
15). This will result in 1 + 1 = 2 as the output of the second step. So the answer is 27 and the process
did not involve any carryover.

Let’s take another example:

Same way, you can add numbers with more digits. You need to carry on the steps till you have
added all the digits.

1. Write 20, 100, 500, and 138 as sums in three different ways.

a. 20 = 14 + 6 b. 100 = c. 500 = d. 138 =

20 = 100 = 500 = 138 =
20 = 100 = 500 = 138 =

The addends are 50, 60, and 70.

The sum is ________.

The sum is 80, and three of the addends are

22, 20, and 10. The fourth addend is _______.

3. Add down and across.  Then add the totals you calculated.  The sum across should equal the
sum down.

Here we learn the standard algorithm of multiplication. It is based on the same principle of
multiplying in parts: you simply multiply ones and tens separately, and add. In the standard
algorithm the adding is done at the same time as multiplying. The calculation looks more compact
and takes less space.

1 1 63
63
63 × 4
×4 × 4

2 252 + 240

Then multiply the tens, and add
4 × 3 = 12 the 1 ten that was carried over.

Multiplication can be solved by repeated addition. Division is the opposite of

multiplication. Division can be solved by repeated subtraction.

Example 1. Bag 771 apples so there are 3 apples in each bag. How many bags are needed?
You can start by putting 3 apples into one bag, which leaves you 768 apples. Then for each
bag, subtract 3 apples, and keep counting the bags you use, until you have no apples.

771 –3 –3 –3 –3 –3 –3 ... keep subtracting!

1 bag 1 bag 1 bag 1 bag 1 bag 1 bag ... keep counting bags!

It just takes quite a long time, doesn't it? Instead you can take a 'shortcut' and initially subtract
300 apples (taking 100 bags) or some other big multiple of 3.

771 – 300 – 300 – 30 ...

100 bags 100 bags 10 bags ...

Example 2. You have 567 apples. If you put 3 apples into one bag, how
many bags will you need?

Look at the chart on the right.

The total needed is 100 + 80 + 9 = 189 bags Apples Bags

to bag all of the apples with no apples left over 567

In other words, 567 ÷ 3 = 189. -300 100 bags
267
- 240 80 bags
27
-27 9 bags

In previous classes, you’ve already learnt about pictographs that represent data using picture
symbols. We can also represent data through bar graphs.

A Bar Graph (also called Bar Chart) is a graphical display of data using bars of different heights.
Imagine you just did a survey of your friends to find which kind of movie they liked best.

Here are the results:

Table: Favorite Type of Movie

Comedy Action Romance Drama SciFi
4 5 6 1 4

You could show that on a bar graph like this:

It is a really good way to show relative sizes: it is easy to see which types of movie are most liked,
and which are least liked, at a glance.

Topic: Unitary Method Assignment Date : _____________
W/S No.: ___01 Submission Date: _____________

Here are some self-marking exercises of problems which can be solved using the
unitary method. This is a technique in mathematics for solving particular types of
problems. It involves scaling down one of the variables to a single unit, i.e. 1, and then
performing the operation necessary to alter it to the desired value.

For example if six coins weigh 66g. What would seventeen coins weigh?

Consider the weight of one coin first

1 coin weighs 11g  (66÷6)
Now it is easy to calculate the cost of seventeen coins
17 coins weigh 187g (17 x 11)

Another example: A car travels 150 kilometers in 3 hours. Calculate the speed of the car.

Calculating the speed of the car means we have to find the average distance covered by the car in 1
hour.
Distance traveled by the car in 3 hours = 150 miles.
Distance traveled by the car in 1 hour = 150/3 miles.
Distance traveled y the car in 1 hour = 50 kilometers.

Therefore, speed of the car is 50 kilometers /hour.

So, when value of more is given and you need to find it for one, you DIVIDE.

When value of one is given and you need to find the same for many, MULTIPLY.

Remember these rules and then try the following problems:

1. Find the rate of edible oils if the cost of 20 litres is Rs 3400.

Adding and Subtracting Time

Add or Subtract the hours and minutes separately.
But you may need to do some adjusting if the minutes end up 60 or more, or less than zero!
Adding Times

Follow these steps:

Add the hours
Add the minutes
If the minutes are 60 or more, subtract 60 from the minutes and add 1 to hours
Like this:
Easy example: What is 2:45 + 1:10 ? Hard example: What is 2:45 + 1:20 ?
Add the Hours: 2+1 = 3 Add the Hours: 2+1 = 3
Add the Minutes: 45+10 = 55 Add the Minutes: 45+20 = 65
The minutes are OK, so the answer is 3:55 The minutes are 60 or more, so subtract 60 from
minutes (65-60 = 5 Minutes) and add 1 to Hours
(3+1 = 4 Hours) ... so the answer is 4:05

Subtracting Times

Follow these steps:

Subtract the hours
Subtract the minutes
If the minutes are negative, add 60 to the minutes and subtract 1 from hours.
Like this:
Easy example: What is 4:10 - 1:05 ? Hard example: What is 4:10 - 1:35 ?
Subtract the Hours: 4-1 = 3 Subtract the Hours: 4-1 = 3
Subtract the Minutes: 10-5 = 5 Subtract the Minutes: 10-35 = -25
The minutes are OK, so the answer is 3:05 The minutes are less than 0, so add 60 to Minutes
(-25+60 = 60-25 = 35 Minutes) and subtract 1
from Hours (3-1 = 2 Hours) ... answer is 2:35

(Note: did you see how we changed "-25+60" to "60-25" ... that is perfectly fine and makes the
calculation easier.)

1. Write the time two ways.
