// Problem //
In today’s cinema room world, a great portion of the investment made is focused on new powerful
sound reproduction and signal processing tools, some of them already including acoustic
correction features.
Nevertheless, even considering the most efficient audio system, if room’s acoustics is not
properly addressed, it is likely that the listener will not be able to totally enjoy and take
advantage of the film audio experience.
Ultimately, this may raise doubts regarding the investment made.

Simply placing loudspeakers in any

convenient location is not enough to get the
full enjoyment of the film audio contents

// Solution //
In order to achieve proper acoustic conditions within your Cinema Room, i.e. achieve a neutral
acoustic environment within audience area, and in this way ensure that you hear what the film
director intended with minimum influence from room’s acoustics, three acoustic treatment
solutions are proposed in this white paper: Economic, Efficient and Professional.
These solutions are for Standard Cinema Rooms (Rectangular Rooms between 15 m2 to 50 m2
and height between 2,4 and 3 m) and can be applied in different phases, i.e. you can start
to implement the Economic solution, and then invest to achieve the Efficient and finally the
Professional solution.

// Basic Acoustic Treatment Steps //

Basic Steps to achieve proper conditions within your Cinema Room will include Optimizing
its Reverberation Time (RT), Controlling Early Reflections and Controlling Sound Field
Anomalies.

Reverberation Time Optimization (RT)

• A Cinema Room should provide a neutral acoustic environment.
• One should be able to acoustically experience what the film director intended,
i.e. to feel the ambiance, reverb and special features contained in the film audio
recordings.
• In addition, speech intelligibity should be maximized, since dialogues are of
major importance in most films.
• Therefore typically criterion calls for very short reverberation times.
• Optimum mid-frequency RT values within the range of 0,2 s to 0,6 s at 500Hz.
• RT Optimization can use both Vicoustic sound absorption and diffusing
panels.

First Reflections Control

• One should be able to feel the ambiance, reverb and special features contained
in the film audio track.
• One should be able to clearly distinguish sound sources and locate them in the
sound field.
• Sound should reach the listener’s ears with very few reflections and remain
“uncoloured” by the room itself.
• First Reflections may be controlled by Vicoustic Sound Absorbing panels.

Room Modes Control

• In small rooms such as Cinema Rooms, room modes are one of the major sound
field anomalies that are likely to occur.
• These modes are likely to cause audible effects within the Cinema Room, and
www.vicoustic.com

affect the listener’s correct perception of sound at low frequencies.

• Modern Cinema Rooms are increasingly considering the use of sub-woofers in
order to reproduce low frequency components of the film audio tracks.
• Room modes may be controlled by Vicoustic Bass Traps solutions.
• Bass traps should be located in the corners of the room.

// Reverberation Time Predictions //

For each acoustic solution presented in the next pages, a RT study with predictions for both
untreated and treated room is shown.
For these RT calculations, we considered a 5 (W) x 8 (L) x 3 (H) m room, with the following finishes:
walls and ceiling made of plasterboard and carpet floor.
These predicted values are meant to be used as a guidance to understand the benefit of the
acoustic treatment that is being proposed.
It should be noted that if smaller rooms are considered, the RT is likely to have lower values than
the ones presented in the images. If different finishes are considered the RT may increase or
decrease depending on the finishes.

Well-designed room acoustics allow a listener to better

enjoy the film audio experience.

// Economic Solution // (for prices consult your local distributor)

5 Boxes of Cinema Round Premium 1 Box of Multifuser DC2

This Economic Solution is focused on First Reflections and Back Wall treatment.
• First Reflections: Treating First Reflections will improve sound definition in the listening area,
control comb-filter effects and at the same time control the Reverberation Time within the
room.
• Back Wall: The Back Wall is being acoustically treated with Diffusion. This will control
Specular Reflections from it and improve Spaciousness within the room.
It should be noted that this Economic solution is not addressing Low Frequency issues.

5 Boxes of Cinema Round Premium 1 Box of Multifuser DC2 4 Boxes of Super Bass Extreme

This Efficient Solution besides addressing all acoustic issues mentioned for the Economic Solution,
i.e. treating First Reflections and Back Wall, it is also addressing Low Frequency issues and
improving sound definition in the backside of the Cinema Room.
• Low Frequencies: Low Frequency Response of the room is being improved by including
two Super Bass Extreme in each room’s corner. Consequently RT in the low frequency region
is approaching recommended values.
• Home Cinema Backside: Sound definition in the Cinema Room backside is being improved
by implementing extra acoustic treatment in the backside walls (8 Cinema Round panels in
each backside wall).
By including this extra acoustic treatment to the room, RT is approaching recommended
values.

3 Boxes of Flexi Wave 120.15 4 Boxes of Flexi Wave 60.15

In this Professional solution we are improving the acoustic results obtained in the Efficient solution:
• Low Frequencies: By including extra Super Bass Extreme in the room’s corners, Low
Frequencies are being better controlled; making RT in the low frequency region achieving
recommended values (4 Super Bass Extreme in each corner of the room).
• Back Wall: Specular reflections from Back Wall are being better controlled. This is being
achieved by adding absorption panels (Wavewood) and also hybrid panels (Flexi Wave -
absorbs and also diffuses sound) to it.
• Spaciousness: By including hybrid panels in the back and side walls (Flexi Wave) we are
better controlling the room’s acoustics and in the same way preventing the room to become
too dead.
By including this extra acoustic treatment in this Professional solution, the recommended RT
values for Cinema Rooms are being achieved in all frequency regions of interest.

TIP

This solution includes Flexi Wave panels, an hybrid panel that

combines sound absorption with diffusion. This will control RT values
and improve sound definition (by absorbing sound), and at the same
time prevent the room to become too dead (by diffusing sound).
